The End of Saturday Snow Throwers

This was the inaugural season of Saturday Snow Throwers. I had previously run Sunday Snow Throwers which consisted of rounds at multiple courses around the city. Because the attendance was hit and miss at certain courses and I wouldn't get many people committing to coming to all of the courses I decided to split that league up and have one league on the north side of town and one on the south side of town and I would say by the attendance . . . they were both successful. Because the attendance was hit and miss at certain courses and I wouldn't get many people committing to coming to all of the courses I decided to split that league up and have one league on the north side of town and one on the south side of town and I would say by the attendance . . . they were both successful. I maintained my average # of players for both leagues and while there was some cross-over between leagues . . . it was a different group of people all-together at each league. SHOULD WE DO IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR???? ANY OTHER IDEAS ON HOW TO MAKE THIS LEAGUE BETTER??? PLEASE TELL ME!!!

We saw battles in all three of the top normally attended divisions and they all had serious points on the line this week with the high ace pool bringing in lots of people that don't normally play the league. Some people had to choose between being aggressive and throwing for aces or just continuing to plug away at their normal approach to try and gain some points on the day.

You can see the results to the right but here are some comments on todays round and how it impacted the standings

Open:
Unfortunately Dan Gerick couldn't attend today because he was playing in the tournament at Riverside in West Bend which allowed Brad Weber (taking second on the day) to pass him up in points. I was able to hold onto the lead in the division today by getting hot after parring the first 6 holes of the day I hit birdies on 11 of the next 12 to have the top score on the day (-11).

Advanced:
David Whiteside came in with the hot round on his card which he knew he pretty much had to do to have a chance . . . but little did he know he had the hot round on the day in Advanced (-7) to vault himself (due to the 22 points available for the top spot today) into first place passing up Nick Williams (who still played very solid today with his (-5). Nick 1 throw advantage over Jason Barnier helped him maintain his spot in second place pushing Jason down to 3rd place overall on the season. All three of you guys were battling every week you played and it shows you what part of your game you may need to work on if you were better at Root River or if Valley View more suits your game. I will post some scoring averages below to highlight some of what I mean.

Intermediate:
The standings remained the same today that they were coming in but Tim Boville continued his hot shooting at valley View coming out of winter with a (-9) to take the top score of the day. He needed a couple people to get in between he and Tyler Boone but that didn't happen despite Tim shooting three better than Tyler today who had a (-6). Tim knew he needed to beat Tyler but also that he needed some help . . . that just wasn't there today as many people were probably running for aces. Stan Mindiola maintained his third place spot only a few points behind Tim and

Unfortunately we couldn't put much competition together for Matt Lemke in Recreational, Dominick Bocek in Juniors, or any kind of a Woman's division this winter. Help me get the word out that we welcome all skill levels and that we would love to see some more people competing in those divisions next year.

Here are some interesting scoring averages for some of the top players. You can see if they are stronger at Root River versus Valley View. RR being more open and longer and VV being more tight and technical and shorter in distance. In order to remain competitive you need to focus on both aspect of your game so take this information to help you work on some different things.

These scores show that Valley View plays an average of 6 throws easier than Root River across all four divisions. Some of this data may be skewed by really good or bad weeks which could have very much been influenced by weather and whether or not you attended but it does point to the people who have smaller differentials. Either you are a better wide open, longer distance, and wind player . . . and struggle with the tight technical aspect of the game at Valley View. If your differential is larger . . . that means you are probably a much better technical short player and struggle with the longer more open and windy holes at Root River.

Thank you to Matt Lemke for donating his $8 CTP ACE POOL winnings today to the new course development fund. Thank you to everyone who contributed by buying mulligans and the rest of the ace pool that wasn't hit we raised $384 to be put towards a new course project this year hopefully (I am working out the kinks with a city right now!!!! We also raised $330 to be split amongst Root River and Valley View for Course improvements and maintenance. I am working on a Master Plan for Valley View (and we know Root River is seeing huge efforts by Todd Farnham and others) so that we can hopefully get our baskets replaced sometime soon, and get some landscape and drainage work done in a few spots on the course. I am hopeful that we will be able to continue to provide this course through the winter with Pay to Play kicking in but if the course gets over-run and abused by people unwilling to pay for their county permits . . . it might suffer in the coming years. I have already warned New Berlin about the possibility of this, but have also said . . . WE . . .that means all of you along with my coordination . . . will be diligent to keep the riff raff out and continue to maintain the course the best we can moving forward.


Thank you to everyone for being so dedicated and showing up every week . . . with 330 rounds played in this league this winter that is over a 20 person average . . . a number that is always a goal of mine with any league I run. I say that's reason enough to do it again next winter!!!

Adjusted Standings after dropped points are removed.

Disc Golf Scene is currently only dropping the three lowest weeks and that is why the standings look different. My adjusted point totals assume everyone shows up next week and disc golf scene does not calculate it like that. That is why i always go through these adjusted points at the end because Disc Golf Scene can be misleading!

Next week is double points so truly anything can happen depending on attendance. With the ace pool being high ($203 + next weeks entrants) I expect a high attendance although there is also a tournament taking place in West Bend on Saturday.

If you show up next week and finish with less points than your highest dropped score (in parenthesis) you will actually go up the difference of those two point totals. If you show up and finish with more points than all of your dropped weeks you will go up by that many points.

if you do not show up and have any points dropping . . . your highest dropped points will be removed ultimately increasing your Adjusted Points total by that value.

Double Points and Absences during Double Points Weeks

Double Points is playing a big part in 3 of the divisions where someone needing points played well and those in the lead either were not present or did not play well. It will be a tight race at the top of the top 3 divisions.

Back To Root River through February

We head back to Root River this Saturday January 31st. February 7th is off because of The Big Freeze, but we will also be there February 14th, 21st, and 28th so that we can get all of our Root River rounds in before the course gets pulled for the thaw (sometime in March is likely).

I will be there this week (January 31st) with a fair amount of merchandise to allow some of you a chance to use up some of your funny money before I go away for 4 weeks. I also encourage you to come visit The Disc ... more

I am hopeful to be able to offer that in coming years but not this year.

Nick Williams will be the fill-in league director February 14th, 21st, and March 7th (if weather delays me from getting back).

Tyler Kollias will be the fill-in league director on February 28th when Nick is also in Arizona for The Memorial Championships.

Like I said . . . please tell me something specific to bring along (before Thursday). . . or plan a visit to The Disc Barn before February 8th or you will have to wait until I return in early-mid March.

I also made an announcement about makeup rounds on Facebook . . . copied below:
"I guess the league attendees have spoken and want makeup weeks allowed. Here are the specifications you must follow in order to do a makeup round: 1) You must play with at least 1 other person who regularly attends the league (does not also need to be submitting a makeup round, can just be along for the round). 2) You will let me know in advance you will be missing a league (or league dates) and will alert me with a photo of your scorecard when you are done (or turn it in to me in person) PRIOR to the missed round. You only get one chance at a makeup round so once you start . . . that round counts. NO WARMUP ROUNDS are allowed . . . your first round at Valley View for the day will become your league round. 3)The only weeks that will be allowed to be missed and makeup rounds allowed will be March 7th, March 14th, and March 21st. March 21st may end up as the Double Points Day at Valley View (if my special venue comes through on March 28th) so be sure to get your round in before March 21st if you need to do a makeup. 4) If you plan to miss Week #13 (March 7th), you will play your makeup round between February 28th and March 7th. If you plan to miss Week #14 (March 14th) you will play your makeup round between March 7th and March 14th. If you plan to miss Week #15 (March 21st) you will play your makeup round between March 14th and March 21st."

Heat Wave!

WOW . . . Saturday looks to be a beautiful day . . . 37 degrees and partly sunny. Valley View tees should be clean and hopefully dry by then and there is still plenty of snow on the ground for it to not be messy with this short lived heat wave. See you all out there by 10:00 AM on Saturday

Congratulations to The top 4 in Advanced today . . .

They all dusted the entire Open field with the best scores of the day:

The top Open score was (-8).

Most of the divisions look to be pretty fair and while some people may play better at Root River, clearly some others play much better at Valley View. One more week and the standings and payouts will be official. I do not see the need to move anyone at this point.

Week #3 Valley View 10:00 AM

I hope to see many of you at Valley View this week so that we can honestly compare Root River scores to Valley View scores. I am pretty happy with where I have people set right now but would like confirmation that everyone is in the appropriate division for both courses. See you all there on Saturday!!!!

I have posted the scores and put people in the division I think they are best suited. As I said on facebook the payouts and points are unofficial and will not be handed out until after 4 weeks have been played as I evaluate if those divisional placements are fair and consistent. I will give it 4 weeks, readjust as needed and then finalize payouts and points. If you 100% want to play in a higher division even though your scores would place you in a lower division, please be sure to tell me that b ... more

This is complicated by the fact that we play RR (Longer and open) and Valley View (Shorter and technical) and those are two very different tests of skills . . . so ultimately it comes down to the average between the courses.

Bear with me for a few weeks and I will be able to ensure everyone is in an appropriate division.
