The SDGA Winter Handicap League is a PDGA sanctioned league that builds points weekly based on player scores. Scores are adjusted based on individual player handicaps. Handicaps are determined over time based on previous week scores. Handicaps level the playing field across the entire league and allow pros to compete with novices! Anyone can win!!
Although the league is 8 weeks long, only the best 5 weeks are used to build season points. This allows players to miss up to 3 weeks of the series and still be fully vested in the season totals.
Each week, we award payouts to the top players with the best scratch (non-handicap) score and the players with the best handicap score. The league handicaps and season points will be tracked on discgolfscene.com. League handicaps will roll over from season to season. This means players will only have to establish a handicap once.
This is a PDGA sanctioned league, so players who are current with the PDGA will receive a rating for every round played during the league. Unofficial Ratings can only be calculated if there are two propagators (member with a rating of at least 700 made up of at least 8 rounds) in attendance during a given week. Regardless, all rounds will be rated once an event is official after the season is completed.
HOW DO I ENTER?
First-time players may register in person before the start of any Saturday league event throughout the season. Players who have a PDDA rating will automatically be provided a starting handicap based on their rating. Players who do not have a PDGA rating will be provided a zero handicap that will adjust over time to their actual handicap. All players are always eligible for scratch score payout, handicap payouts, and ace pots.
Entry fee per round: $4
Ace fund buy-in: $1
Super Ace buy-in: $5
"All-in" buy-in: $10
HOW DO I ESTABLISH A HANDICAP AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
Handicaps are determined by averaging the BEST THREE SCORES from the player's LAST SIX ROUNDS. If a player has not played at least 3 rounds, they will be "provided" three scores to start with (usually course par three times, or their PDGA handicap three times). As the player completes league rounds, these "provided" scores will be replaced by their actual scores. The average of all three scores will be used to determine the player handicap.
Example 1: If a player shows up for the first time, their handicap is 0
0 + 0 + 0 = 0
0/3 = Handicap 0
If they shoot +5, that score will replace one of their "starting" handicaps:
0 + 0 + 5 = 5
5/3 = Handicap 1.6
On their second round, they shoot +10. This replaces their second score:
0 + 5 + 10 = 15
15/3 = Handicap 5
By the time the player completes their third round (+7), they have a complete handicap:
5 + 10 + 7 = 22
22/3 = Handicap 7.3
Example 2: If a player shows up for the first time and their PDGA rating is 890, their handicap is +9 (per the chart, using par 60 for example)
9 + 9 + 9 = 27
27/3 = Handicap 9
If they shoot +5, that score will replace one of their "starting" handicaps:
9 + 9 + 5 = 23
5/3 = Handicap 7.6
On their second round, they shoot +10. This replaces their second score:
9 + 5 + 10 = 24
24/3 = Handicap 8
By the time the player completes their third round (+7), they have a complete handicap:
5 + 10 + 7 = 22
22/3 = Handicap 7.3
Please note that only 80% of the handicap value is used. So a 7.3 handicap is actually 5.8, and an 8 handicap is actually 6.4.
HOW ARE SEASON POINTS CALCULATED?
Each week a player participates in the league, they will be awarded 10 starting points. Players who have a handicap established with the league (or from their PDGA rating) will be placed ahead of players who do not have a handicap. Players will receive 2 points for each player they beat. Points will be awarded to all players at the event and tracked to determine a season winner. Players will only use the top 5 points scores from the duration of the season to establish a season champion.
HOW ARE PAYOUTS DETERMINED?
The entry fee to play in the league is $4. Players may pay at registration weekly or prepay via Paypal. From the $4 entry fee, payouts will be as follows:
$1 from each player to scratch score winner
$1 from each player to handicap score winner
$1 from each winner to end of season points champion
$0.50 from each player to PDGA
$0.50 from each player to SDGA
ACE FUND AND SUPER ACE FUND?
Players may choose to opt-in to additional Ace pools. The regular ace pool is $1, and the super ace pool is $5. If a player hits an ace, they will win everything in the ace pool they opted in to. The $1 Ace Pool winner will always receive $100. The Super Ace Pool will continue to build until an ace is hit, and a winner is paid. Ace pools can carry over from league season to new league season.
SEASON WINNINGS
At the end of the posted season, payouts are as follows:
Season champion: 70% of season payout
Second place: 20% of season payout
Third place: 10% of season payout
Remember, a $1 from every player throughout the season goes towards the season payouts. The more players we have, the higher the prize pool will be!
PDGA POINTS
All players who are registered and current with the PDGA will receive PDGA points based on their season scores. All players will be placed in the MA1 division for scoring purposes. This allows amateurs to earn Amateur points towards World invites.
