Buhl Park

This is an updated review of the course since it has changed a lot since I first reviewed it. I really enjoy playing this course. I really enjoy playing this course. The park is beautiful, and the course allows for a nice tour of most of the park.

Pros: Holes that utilize elevation, foliage, and other obstacles are well-conceived. I like the way the water comes into play on 18. Some of the tee shots playing through low canopies into technical fairways are really fun to work out. There are out of bounds areas everywhere, which makes for an interesting challenge. There is also a pleasant mixture of skill levels and distances, so that any level player could find something to enjoy. I think when the concrete tee pads go in, I'll probably bump the rating up to an A-.

Cons: There are multiple holes that are simply boring, because they are stuck in the middle of wide open fields. I think this is more the fault of the landscape than the course design, but it still needs to be mentioned. I'm not a fan of holes 15 and 16. 15 has a reasonable fairway to start, but the approach in to the basket is a bit of a crap shoot because of the trees. 16 has no fairway whatsoever to speak of. Just throw and pray.

All in all, this course makes for a pleasant yet challenging round of disc golf.

Fairly open course. Decent amount of shade in the summer, but a lot of open shots. Tee areas are mostly accessible, but some of them are sloppy or poorly placed(too close to the road, on uneven ground, near mulched trees). These spots could be easily upgraded to 10 feet away to more even, less distracted areas. Hopefully whenever the permanent tees get placed, these tee areas will be considered. Mach V baskets are some of the better baskets on the market(Veteran, Mach X, Discatcher...). ...

Mach V baskets are some of the better baskets on the market(Veteran, Mach X, Discatcher...). Good use of OB with roads and water, however, walkways can be very, very busy with other park-goers.

This is my summer home. With the lack of poison ivy and the ability to practice multiple shots on multiple holes, this course makes a good practice facility.

This course sees continuous improvement with the addition of B and C pins on many holes, also 3 practice baskets in the ground, concrete tee pads for all tee locations, well maintained fairways.

Great course. Now that the concrete tees are in, an updated review is in order. Everything about this course is top notch, from the baskets, to the tees, to the flow. It has a good mix of open and technical holes, and uses the park land very well to create a fun and interesting course. A few holes are wide open shots, but the majority have the right mix of trees and placement shots to make it interesting, especially playing with the paths and roads as OB. The new concrete tees make this course even more enjoyable, as before, footing off the tee could be an issue. Now there's no worries for that, and you can grip and rip. A few holes have been changed with the new tees, most noticeably on holes 10 and 11. I like the back 9 better, as it has a lot of tough shots that require you to shape your shots so that you can get a good look at the basket to get that birdie or par. My only complaint is the pars. They seem legit from the blue tees, but the whites and reds are a touch generous, as they remain the same par regardless of tee and distance to basket.

Most courses are placed in secluded areas to minimize usage conflicts. Installation in these secluded areas require much more clearing and countless volunteer hours during install and ongoing maintenance. It's much more challenging to sculpt a design into a park's heavy use areas with minimal usage conflicts. Buhl Park and Trevor have accomplished this elusive harmony with a challenging/ 3 tee design as a bonus. Buhl's other park users are always plentiful, making it an ideal showcase for the growth of our sport. The partnership between the park and local club is a model of the symbiotic relationship that all clubs/parks should aspire to. Buhl is just one of the most pleasant disc golf rounds you can play in the U.S.
