I wanted to reach out to you about an event the Dept of the VA is holding, the VA Golden Age Games. As part of this event for our Veterans we are adding a Visually Impaired Disc Golf event which is a recent addition to the Golden Age Games. For this event to really shine we’re going to need a lot of help from the local disc golf scene. I’m hoping to work with your club to get a number of volunteers for VI Disc Golf to assist our veterans as noted below, or to assist with particular holes. All in all we will have 40 total participants in the VI Disc Golf event so I’m hoping to get at least 40 volunteers familiar with the disc golf rules to help our participants. I’m looking forward to working with your club!
The event itself will be held at Roots Disc Golf Course on Aug 26th, 2024 from 08:00 AM to 01:00 PM - Roots Disc Golf Course.
For VI disc golf, ideally each veteran will have a volunteer paired with them for the duration of the game. The volunteers will set the veterans up to throw the disc, verbally describe where the basket is, the distance and if there are obstacles. When the initial disc is thrown, it is helpful to have a volunteer be on the course about halfway to the basket to clap/make noise so the veteran knows the directions to throw. Once the disc lands, describe where it landed in relation to the basket. Assist them as needed to ambulate to the disc thrown. Once halfway to basket, have a volunteer go to the basket and make noise shaking it or clapping so the vet knows the direction to throw.
We will be reviewing this in great detail during the day of orientation before the event. Pending the Veterans vision, they will need human guide to be safely guided throughout the course. Veterans may be independent in traveling with their white cane. Some Veterans may need verbal guidance i.e. uneven surface, tree branch in the way, etc.
And of course support the veterans and cheer them on ????
The volunteer portal is now available at https://38nvgag.my-trs.com/. You will want to register, select your affiliation with the VA etc, Then select sporting events and “Disc Golf – Roots Disc Golf Course” event. There are also several other events if you’d like to sign up for any of those, including a wheelchair disc golf event as well that should be added to the site.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this long request. Hopefully together we can make this an excellent event for our Veterans!
