DFOK Monday Night Skins League CANCELED.

After careful consideration, I have decided to no longer host the DFOK Monday Night Skins league.
Generally speaking, I have not enjoyed Monday workdays. Nope.
Then for some stupid reason, I thought I'd be a league administrator on my least favorite day of the week. Dumb.
With that in mind, I will no longer be hosting that league.
This is probably a good time to make this change, considering all the talk about other changes in the world of disc golf in Manhattan.

June 27th Monday Night Skins League.

This Week's Monday Night Skins League will take place at Warner Park.
Check-In at 5:45pm, Start Time at 5:55pm

It will be a "You vs. Your Card" scoring format, with an added "Coin Skins" twist on each fairway.
The Coin Skins twist will require players to "put in" one coin (US Currency) on each tee pad, as the round progresses.
Coins can very from pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters... or even a dollar coin!
Then those coins can be won, pushed, or lost, alo ... more

Free Pro Clinic with Jay and Des Reading followed by $10 Doubles

Come out to Tuttle next Tuesday May 10th for a free Clinic with Pro Disc golfers Jay and Des Reading! The free clinic will start at 4:30 followed by an optional $10 random draw doubles round starting at 5:45. During the round there will be special CTP prize and other potential prizes. Payout will be 100% in Merch provided by Jay and Des. Please come and show your appreciation to these guys for taking time to stop by and see us here in Manhattan!

PLEASE... Pre-Register for Break the Chains!

If you know you are going to play in Break the Chains this Saturday, PLEASE Pre-Register--it not only makes the TD's job 10 times easier, it also greatly speeds up the registration process on Tournament Day. If more folks don't pre-register, we will likely get off to a Late Start on Saturday. So...even if you don't pre-pay online, you can still pre-register. Just knowing who plans to play and in what division will help ALOT!

Daylight Savings is coming... and you know what that means... the official start of the 2016 Doubles Season. We will start at 5:30 on Tuesday, March 15th at Tuttle. New this year--trophies will be awarded for the top 3 Season Points Earners!

Fairmont Cleanup Day

There will be a Fairmont Cleanup day on the 6th of March, starting at 9am. We will be moving fallen wood out of the fairways and placing wood chips in some of the "muddy" areas. Hope to see many of you out there.

Another Disc Golf Course In Manhattan!!

Do you want an additional disc golf course in Manhattan? Are you free for an hour on January 28th? We would love to see you at the Open House and Interactive Workshop for Lee Mill Park so that we can show that disc golf is becoming a popular activity in the Manhattan area. Let's be the most populous group in attendance.

The Open House is from 5:30 to 6:30 and the Interactive Workshop is from 6:30-7:30 on Thursday January 28th.

4. Maintain complete information about club finances and property/equipment.
5. Provide monthly financial status reports at a club meeting.

7. Manage all club finances and accounts pursuant to official club decisions and bylaws. Including, but not limited to, money collected from:
a. Leagues

c. Fundraisers
8. File tax paperwork as needed.
9. Manage collection of membership dues, as implemented by the club.

i. Alan Fox wants a key to the baskets.
ii. Discussion about sending the State Park a letter about DFOK’s opinion on a Key checkout procedure.

iv. Motion made to establish a committee to write said letter 6-1
v. Committee volunteers are Mark,Rick, and Justin
b. Fairmont: Water fountain discussion.
c. Warner:
i. Jeremy going to talk to Casey w/ City to move wood chip piles to places on course. Ex. hole 8 and 5. Jeremy will organize workdays.
ii. Meeting at 4:30 (City of Manhattan Parks Advisory Board) to discuss Warner update. Meeting is at City Hall on Monday,November 2nd.
iii. Looking for new Warner Park Completion Project Co-Chair, as Jeremy will be moving to VA.
d. Penny Land
i. Approved helping the City of Wamego to re-design, if they will let us.
3. Mark moved and Shad seconded to define DFOK Officer job duties. After discussion,we decided this is a process more easily done with a white board or projector so everyone knows what we are discussing, Mark retracted his motion.
4. Jeremy moved to discuss the election process,Shad seconded. After discussion, motion approved 7-0.
a. Who runs for positions? Members of the club must volunteer for the office (no one can be forced to take a position).
b. Even if you run unopposed, must every one still vote for that person? (so we don’t wind up with someone no one trusts in a position) Most people seem to approve this idea.
c. How do we ACTUALLY cast a ballot? Shad wants digital (survey monkey or the like, the link should be posted on discgolfscene because all members of DFOK are those that follow DFOK on dgscene.com) Damon and Roberto pointed out the benefits of physical voting.
5. Rick moved that voters must be current members on the "exact date" that the votes are totaled (to be an current 2015 DFOK Member, you have to "follow" DFOK on discgolfscene.com).
Shad seconded. The Motion approve 5 –0 (2 abstained).
6. Justin moved that voting process stays open for exactly 2 weeks. Motion approved 7–0.
7. Rick moves that the voting process be on an online survey/website and the ballot is open so that everyone can see who voted for whom.
Justin seconded. The motion approved 7 – 0.

8. Shad moved that for DFOK’s first election, it should be beheld on December 7th, closing December 21st of 2015.
Someone seconded. Approved 7–0.
9. Shad moved we have a “special”meeting November 5th, to finalize/discuss officer descriptions/definitions.
Jeremy seconded. Approved 6 - 0 (1 abstained).
10. Shad moved to amend the date and time. Sunday,November 8th at 1pm.
Belyea Seconded. Approved 6–0 (1 abstain).
11. Rick moved that people must file to run for office one week before voting opens, thus December 1st.
Shad seconded. Approved 5 -1 (Belyea left early).
12. Jeremy moved to adjourn the meeting.
Justin seconded. Mark wants to furthe discuss the pros and cons of ending the meeting. Approved 4 - 2

The meeting will take place at the Arby's, across from Warner Park, directly following Thursday's Points League event.

The first & foremost item on the agenda will be to continue moving forward with the Officers/Election topics;
1. Defining the official job duties of each Official DFOK Officer position.
2. Setting up an election process for ellecting all Official DFOK Officers.

The meeting will take place at the Arby's, across from Warner Park, directly following Thursday's Points League event.

Volunteers for Flint Hills Open Tasks.

I received a message from Discs Unlimited earlier today asking "Can the Club (DFOK) help get the course ready again this year (for the Flint Hils Open) like they did last year and help some the day of the tourney?"

After discussing this with them on the phone, they need help with the following:
1. Marking course O.B., where needed. (Friday Afternoon/Evening).
2. Possibly a couple people at the check in table.
3. Establish a "morning" & "afternoon" course l ... more

Tuttle Creek Disc Golf Workday - Sept. 12th

Another Tuttle Creek State Park - Disc Golf Course Workday is set for Saturday, Sept. 12th.
Starting at 9:00am (or just jump in whenever you can make it)
Help install more ground sleeves for additional pin (basket) placements.

Please RSVP here if you can make it, plus spread the word to your fellow disc golfers that they can help too.
If you have equipment such as wheel barrows, shovels, rakes, levels, buckets, etc), please bring them.
Don't forget your work gloves and of plenty to drinks to stay hydrated.

DFOK Meeting Notes: Thursday, August 27th (2015).

Below are my notes of the items officially decided upon at the last Monthly DFOK Meeting, held on Thursday
August 27th.

1. 2015 MONTHLY DFOK MEETINGS:

Below are my notes of the items officially decided upon at the last Monthly DFOK Meeting, held on Thursday
August 27th.

1. 2015 MONTHLY DFOK MEETINGS:
A discussion took place regarding the conflicts in the 2015 DFOK Meeting schedule & the remaining 2015 Thursday night
Points League.
It was moved & seconded to change the meeting location & time for the next 2 DFOK meetings (Sept. and October, 2015) to directly follow the last Thursday night league rounds of those respective months, in the park where the league round takes
place. The motion carried with a 7-0 vote.

2. DFOK BOARD/LEADERSHIP DETAILS
Background Info: In a previous DFOK Meeting it was moved & seconded to create five DFOK Board Member positions, then
define the election process details & job duties of those postions. See meeting notes from the March 26th DFOK Meeting.
In this months meeting (Aug.), many discussions took place about the future DFOK Board Member positions.

As a result of those discssuions, the following voting actions took place this months.
(A) It was moved & seconded that all Board Member Positions should have 1 year term limits.
The motion carried with a 7-0 vote.
(B) It was moved & seconded that in order to be eligible to vote in the upcoming DFOK Board Member Elections, individuals
must "favorite" (similar to follow) the Disc Fanatics of Kansas CLUB page on the discgolfscene.com website.
The motion carried with a 7-0 vote.
(C) It was moved & seconded that in future DFOK Board Elections, to be eligible to run for the DFOK Board President
position, candidates must be as follows;
(1) In Good Standing with the Disc Fanatics of Kansas club.
(2) Have served on a previous DFOK Board
(3) Receive a unanimous vote of approval from the current DFOK Board members.
The motion carried with a 7-0 vote.
(D) Individuals were reminded bring their list of potential DFOK Board Member job duties to the next meeting so we can
work on that task.

Many other small topics were discussed, but no legislative actions were taken on those items/discussions.

Members in attendance were as follows; Jeremy LeCrone, Mitch Brenn, Mark Kewley, Shad Schafer, Justin Nolasco, Will Reed,Damon Funke, and myself.

Change of Venue ~ DFOK Monthly Meeting

The August DFOK Meeting has a change of venue.

As usual, the Monthly DFOK Meeting will take place on the last Thursday of the month (which is tomorrow night).
This month we will conduct a quick meeting directly after the weekly league round on Thursday night at Warner Park.
The first order of buisiness will be to discuss if there's a need to set a new standard meeting day & time for DFOK Monthly Meetings.

Each project will have a group of church volunteers assigned to work with a DFOK Lead, so let's make the most of the willing hands we'll have out there to help!
Bring work gloves, shovels, rakes, wheel barrows, 5 gallon buckets, water jugs, tree loppers (hand held only please), or any tools you have that can help with the following projects. Also: sunscreen, bug spray, and long pants may be ideal.


Project 1 (Lead: Rob Santiago) New Placement for Practice Basket: We will be installing a new placement for the practice basket (in direction of tee box 1), so alleviate strain on current placement. Then we will fill pit around current placement with limestone screening and mulch to improve longevity.


Project 2 (Lead: Scott Fenton) Pathway Limb Trimming and Mulch (Lower section): We will be trimming back tree limbs and mulching pathways connecting hole 4 basket placements to 5 tee box.


Project 3 (Lead: Daisuke Takahashi) Pathway Limb Trimming and Mulch (Upper section): We will be trimming back tree limbs and mulching pathway connecting hole 3 basket to 4 tee box, hole 4 tee box to 8 basket and cleaning up bushes behind 8 tee box and beside 8 fairway.


Project 4 (Lead: JP McVey) Screening Around Tee Boxes (Lower section): We will be building back up screening around tee boxes 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7. Replenishing what has washed away over the years, and attempting to make approaches to tee boxes more "flush" and erosion resistant in the future.


Project 5 (VOLUNTEER NEEDED TO LEAD!!!) Screening Around Tee Boxes (Upper section): We will also be building up screening around tee boxes 9, 4, and 6 with most emphasis devoted to 6 tee box. Additionally, clearing limbs behind and right of 6 tee box will be in the works with either this group or group 2.

Help Needed - Tuttle Basket Removal

The next DFOK Workday will be quick & simple.

Remove the baskets at the Tuttle Creek State Park course for safe storage during the Country Stampede.

2015 DFOK Points League Qualifier

Join us this Thursday at 5:30 at Tuttle Creek State Park for the First week of the 2015 DFOK Points League Qualifier. This will be the first part of a 3 part League. All players will play in the same division for this part of the League. After 2 months of play, players will be separated into divisions based off of the points standings. Players can optionally move up a division but not down. I will go over all the rules before we start Thursday. Below are my notes of the main items discussed and/or decided upon at the last Monthly DFOK Meeting, held on Thursday March 26th.

1. VIBRAM BIRDIE BASH - By Jessy Prado

1. VIBRAM BIRDIE BASH - By Jessy Prado

2. LEAGUE UPDATES
A. DFOK DOUBLES: Kevin Clark announced the unclaimed remainder of the 2014 Ace Fund is $80.
It has been mentioned that most players would like to see those funds spent on Tuttle Creek course improvements.
Much discussion followed.
It was moved & seconded to investigate the potential of building a bridge/walkway from Tee 17 to Basket #17 & spend the $80 on that project.
Also of note; JP McVey has volunteered to be the league Co-Administrator & he has posted the scores the past few weeks.

B. 2015 DFOK WINTER VIRTUAL BAG TAG LEAGUE: Shad Schafer announced this league will be concluding as planned on Sunday, March 29th.

3. DFOK CLUB WEB-SITE.
Mark Kewley has held (&paid for) the url "DFOK.us" for a few years in anticipation of DFOK needing a web-site that is 100% owned & managed by our club (rather that depending on a third party web site).
It was agreed upon by the group to renew the annual fee of $19.99, anticipating the need for posting official DFOK bylaws, board member position descriptions, club membership info, etc.
People volunteering to help pay this year were $5 Kevin Clark, $5 Shad Schafer, $5 Rick Petrie, $5 Mark Kewley.

4. CLUB GOALS, MISSION STATEMENT, LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE.
A long discussion took place regarding the positions/offices/committees that DFOK should create when setting up the initial "board" structure.
Jeremy LeCrone, Mark Kewley & Shad Schafer brought their own (printed) drafts.
A long discussion followed about many options & philosophies, resulting in the following:
It was moved & seconded to start with the following five board member positions, then define the associated duties at next months meeting.
1. President.
2. Vice-President (maybe as President Elect).
3. Secretary
4. Treasure
5. Information Coordinator (or better name if found).
The motion passed 5-0.

5. BASKET ROTATION COMMITTEE UPDATES:
WARNER PARK: Shad Schafer & Rick Petrie last rotated baskets in Warner Park in Mid-March, with 4 of the 5 being moved to alternate placements.
Fairway 5's basket was not moved due to a problem with it's lock.
TUTTLE CREEK: Mark Kewley, Shad Schafer, and a couple "unknown dudes" moved some baskets the week prior.

FAIRMONT PARK: Multiple members of the Fairmont Basket Committee moved baskets for the 2015 Midwest Collegiate Challenge (hosted by KSU DG Club).
They will be moved again for the upcoming Vibram Birdie Bash (hosted by Jessy Prado).

6. DISC GOLF COURSE PAMPHLETS:
Mark has started pulling together some information & photos.
Nobody else has done any work on this project.
The topic is to be continued into next month.

7. COURSE CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENCE UPDATES:
FAIRMONT PARK: Rick stated there are no construction updates of note at this time.
A course workday will be needed this summer, date to be determined.
Potential for wood chips on fairways #2 & #6 to help deal with muddy conditions.
Note: Riley County Parks are building concrete sidewalks near the common "meeting area" located north of the disc golf parking lot.
WARNER PARK: Jeremy LeCrone has a walk-thru of the course with a City of Manhattan representative.
He plans to discuss filling in dirt around the practice basket, tee pads, trimming branches on walkway from 8 to 9 fairways, potential for stairs/steps on 4 & 9, adding trash cans.
A study as part of a Strategic Facility Improvement Plan is underway with the City of Manhattan.
The study is being conducted by a third party consulting company, reviewing all community parks & programs.

TUTTLE CREEK: Daisuke announced the new baskets for the River Pond course are scheduled to arrive in Emporia, KS, between April 6th & 10th.
State Park staff members will pick up the baskets & bring them to the park.
State Parks staff will be digging holes for new ground equipment/bases in early April.
The non-basket equipment will be ordered soon.
DFOK CLUB WORKDAYS to install ground equipment/bases may be scheduled for APRIL 11th-12th, or APRIL 18th-19th, (depending on the delivery date of the required equipment).
The "old" black baskets will stay with the State Park for future use.
Tee & main sign design work is currently underway.

8. UPCOMING DFOK LEAGUES & TOURNAMENTS:
Many ideas for upcoming leagues & tournaments were discussed.
Shad proposed a 2015 singles format "Points League", to take place on Thursday evenings, starting in April.
It was moved & seconded to approve the basic framework of the proposed league.
The motion pased 5-0.
None of the other proposed leagues or tournaments were ready to be voted upon.

The league was proposed to have the same rules of play, financial documentation, entry fees, and payouts as the 2014 DFOK Doubles league. Below are my notes of the main items discussed and/or decided upon at the latest Monthly DFOK Meeting, held on Thursday Feburary 26th.

1. 2015 DFOK DOUBLES LEAGUE:
Kevin Clark made a formal request to conduct a DFOK endorsed league to run from March through October of 2015. The league was proposed to have the same rules of play, financial documentation, entry fees, and payouts as the 2014 DFOK Doubles league. There was approx. 15 minutes of discussion, most of which was centered around three major topics, plus a few minor topics. The two major topics were as follows; (1) Continuing with the documentation procedures that were put in place for this league in 2014 (as described above). People in attendance were in favor of continuing that practice because of the "transparency" that it provides for fellow disc golfers & non disc golfers (if needed). (2) Other communities use their league entry fees, in addition to generating prizes for players, as a way to raise money to pay for course improvements and/or maintenance issues. Two potential concepts were discussed. (A) A small part of every players entry fee would automatically go towards course improvements/maintenance issues. ---OR--- (B) Establishing an official "Club Membership" process that would include membership dues, then establish "Member" and "Non-member" league entry fees, with the proceeds going towards course improvements/maintenance issues. (3) How should any unclaimed Ace Fund dollars generated in the 2015 season be spent. A brief history of how they have been spent in previous years was provided & discussed. Items #1 and #2 above were discussed as items that are not easily achieved until more official Club structure is in place (at a later date/year). It was then Moved & Seconded to approve the request to conduct the 2015 DFOK Doubles League with the same rules & documentation procedures as 2014. A brief discussion about the motion took place. The Motion was then VOTED upon & passed 7-0 in favor.

2. CLUB GOALS, MISSION STATEMENT, LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE & RESPONSIBILITIES.
A discussion took place regarding what exactly should DFOK as a club be doing for disc golf in the community in the short and long term future, plus the logistics of those ideas. Many ideas of projects, events, competitions, teams, etc. were discussed at great length. As a result the following Club Goals were drafted at the meeting.
1. Foster a community that promotes the positive advancement of the sport of disc golf.
2. Assist local park staff in course development, construction, and maintenance.
3. Host local disc golf competitions.
4. Host local disc golf outreach events.
5. Promote the Manhattan area as a disc golf destination.
It was moved & seconded to approve these 5 goals as the official DFOK Goals, subject only to annual review starting in 2016. The Motion was then VOTED upon & passed 5-0 in favor, with 1 obtained.
While on the above described topic, was the need for an official DFOK Mission Statement. Multiple items/statements to be included were discussed, including a draft Mission Statement document provided by Roberto Santiago.
In addition, a discussion took place regarding what specific DFOK Offices should be created as the club becomes more organized. The following potential offices were identified to be further discussed at next months meeting.
- President.
- Vice-President (Pres Elect. and/or Pres. In-Waiting)
- Public Relations Administrator.
- Social Media Administrator.
- Secretary.
- Course Representatives (work with and/or part of existing Basket Committees).
- League Administrators.
- Players Representatives.

3. BASKET ROTATION COMMITTEE UPDATES:
Warner: All baskets were moved in the first week of Feb. They will next be moved around Friday, March 6th.
Fairmont: Sean O'Bryan & Roberto Santiago were added to this committee. Most baskets were moved in Feb.. They will next be moved prior to March 7th to facilitate the Midwest Collegiate Challenge to be hosted by the K-State Disc Golf Club.

4. COURSE UPDATES:
FAIRMONT PARK / RILEY COUNTY: Three new park benches are going to be installed by the RL Co. Parks staff. Those locations have been marked with orange flags (please help keep those in place). Many ideas of course improvements were discussed. Members are encouraged to bring examples of ideas to the next meeting. It was generally agreed upon that DFOK will host a Fairmont Park course workday in 2015, with details to be worked out at a future meeting. (Update provided by Rick Petrie)
WARNER PARK / CITY OF MANHATTAN: The City is currently conducting a community wide study/survey (via mail) regarding all of their park properties & recreation programs. Multiple local disc golfers are known to have received a copy of the survey. See last months meeting notes regarding the study & timeline regarding the Warner Park efforts. Many ideas of course improvements were discussed. It was generally agreed upon that DFOK will host a Warner Park course workday in 2015, with details to be worked out at a future meeting. (Update provided by Jeremy LeCrone)
RIVERPOND / STATE OF KANSAS: There is no additional information regarding the release/arrival date for the new Dynamic Discs baskets. Details on the pending DFOK workday to install these baskets will follow. (Update provided by Daisuke Takahashi)

5. DISC GOLF COURSE PAMPHLETS:
The Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau are interested in working with us to produce a pamphlets highlighting disc golf in the Manhattan area (see last months meeting notes for more information). All members are encouraged to bring potential artwork for a tri-fold document to next months meeting.

6. CURRENT LEAGUE UPDATES:
2015 DFOK Winter Virtual Bag Tag League: The current league will end in March, 2015.

DFOK Meeting Notes: Thursday, Jan. 30th.

Below are my notes of the main items discussed and/or decided upon at last night’s Monthly DFOK Meeting.
1. MOVE BASKETS FOR LCM: A group of volunteers was formed to move the baskets at the Fairmont course to the placements specified by the Lutheran Campus Ministry for Saturday’s “2015 LCM Ice Bowl”.

Below are my notes of the main items discussed and/or decided upon at last night’s Monthly DFOK Meeting.
1. MOVE BASKETS FOR LCM: A group of volunteers was formed to move the baskets at the Fairmont course to the placements specified by the Lutheran Campus Ministry for Saturday’s “2015 LCM Ice Bowl”.
2. BASKET ROTATION COMMITTEES: It was discussed that some of the park’s baskets need to be rotated more often, and could vary depending on the season. For example; Moving them more often in the summer than in the winter, also more often for the fairways with 3 placements.
Shad Shafer was added to the Warner Park Basket Rotation Committee.
Mitch Brenn was added to the Fairmont Park Basket Rotation Committee.
3. FAIRMONT PARK / RL COUNTY UPDATE: A Fairmont Park Course update was provided by Rick Petrie (myself). Items discussed were where to locate the next 3 benches that Riley County has purchased. It was determined they should be installed at the following locations; 8’s tee pad, 10’s tee pad & 16’s tee pad. In addition to the existing benches by 1’s tee pad, 3’s tee pad & 14’s tee pad. Also discussed were many options for course enhancements such as drinking fountains, directional signs, tall grass OB areas, elevated pins, etc. Also discussed were general future park construction projects, for example new sidewalks currently under construction.
4. WARNER PARK / CITY UPDATE: A Warner Park Course update was provided by Mitchell Brenn regarding the Club’s ongoing request to finish the 18 hole course. Items discussed were the ongoing progress of the City’s Strategic Facility Improvements Plan, plus a recent tour of the course with a City Parks staff member. The City has hired a consulting firm to help study ALL the City’s current parks, plus the recreation programs, in order to see what Manhattan citizens want & need. We examined the minutes from latest meeting of the City’s Steering Committee for the above described Improvements Plan. The current phase of that project is the City is developing a survey/questionnaire to mail to a random sampling of Manhattan citizens. More information can be found at http://www.ci.manhattan.ks.us/2214/Strategic-Facility-Improvement-Plan Also discussed regarding the Warner Park course was the need for some workday activities/improvements on the existing course. Items discussed were the need for some stairs in specific areas, moving tee sign #6, plus a few miscellaneous maintenance ideas.
5. RIVER POND / STATE PARK UPDATE: A River Pond Course update was provided by Daisuke Takahashi. Daisuke has been working independent of DFOK to coordinate efforts in (1) “Fundraising” for new equipment, (2) “Re-Design” activities, and (3) “Signage” improvements to the existing River Pond Course at the Tuttle Creek State Park. Daisuke then made a formal request for planning & labor assistance from DFOK for the upcoming (3) “Construction” phase of the River Pond project, to be done in a similar manner as the Fairmont & Warner projects were. The specific date(s) & tasks associated with this construction phase will be announced at a later date. It was moved & seconded to accept this request. It was then VOTED upon & passed 5-0 in favor.
6. VIRTUAL BAG TAG LEAGUE UPDATE: Shad Schafer stated that everything is going well with the league. He also stated that 40 tags have been “issued” thus far, with approx. two months to go in that league.
7. A lot of discussion then took place regarding past DFOK leagues, plus all types of potential DFOK leagues. It was also discussed that ALL ideas for future DFOK leagues must continue to be presented at regularly scheduled monthly DFOK Meeting to obtain DFOK’s approval & support.
8. MANHATTAN AREA DISC GOLF PAMPHLET: Daisuke Takahashi described the need for a pamphlet showing the 3 main disc golf courses in the Manhattan area. It was discussed that the Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) might be interested in funding the production of said document, if we design the document. It was moved & seconded to contact the Manhattan CVB to as for their assistance. It was then VOTED upon & passed 5-0 in favor.
9. LOST DISC LOCK BOX: Rob Santiago described the need for a disc golf lost & found lock box. It was discussed if DFOK would want to raise money to purchase one (or more) to be mounted in a park, plus maintain a system of returning discs to their owners. It was moved & seconded to think over “cros” & “cons” of this idea until the next meeting. It was then VOTED upon & passed 5-0 in favor.
10. UPCOMING LEAGUES:
11. CLUB LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE & RESPONSIBILITIES: Many items were discussed as part of this topic. Those items included the need for a Mission Statement, Organizational Goals, Written Standard Operating Procedures, Annual Goals, Officers, official Not-For-Profit or LLC status, etc. All in attendance agreed to continue working on the above mentioned (and similar) items in the coming monthly meetings.

• DFOK will not make any plans to initiate involvement in Parks and Rec youth programs / leagues.
Perhaps, if demand from community becomes apparent, we can discuss getting paid for services as
instructors / coaches / officials. In the meantime, other projects are more pressing.
• There is a strong desire to engage neighbors of Warner Park, and promote interest in completing
course from a local perspective. No specifics decided. Need to generate ideas and make a plan that
can be implemented in warmer months to get neighbors out to play.

(Item 2) Tuttle Creek Sponsorship:

• Daisuke contacted regarding available fairways for sponsorship.
Taken: 1, 7, 11, 14, 17, 13 (half), 16 (half), 18 (half).
. Motion to officially sponsor half fairways on 2 and 13. Confirmed (5 yes, 0 no, 1 abstain)
• Contacted Daisuke with decision and heard confirmation back.
Announcement: DFOK will sponsor half of fairway 2 and half of fairway 13 at Tuttle Creek State Park.

(Item 3) 2014–2015 Winter Virtual Bag Tag League
Points of Discussion:
• Shad Schafer suggests running a bag tag league for winter 2014-2015. Presents potential format and
detailed rules. Group discussed details of league format, rules, format, and cost. Below are highlights
of decisions.• League will be FREE to play.
• Virtual bag tags only (will not create physical tags with club money at any time).
• Weekly regular events to be held on Sunday afternoons. League members must attend at least one
weekly event per calendar month to remain “current”. At beginning of month, non–current players
lose previous bag tag and are pushed to “bottom” of rankings. Current players move up in rankings
accordingly.
• Weekly events will rotate between Fairmont, Warner, and Tuttle. Calendar to be created and available
online to avoid confusion.
• Friendly tag challenges are encouraged between league members, but not required.
• League administrators will be Shad Schafer and Jeremy LeCrone.

(Item 3.1) DFOK as a not–for–profit
Points of Discussion:
• Without official status as a not–for–profit organization, DFOK is liable to money taken in for events,
leagues, pools, park improvements.
• Without precise knowledge of the laws, and official compliance, DFOK should abstain from endorsing
leagues / events where money changes hands.
• These winter months would be a good time to hammer out details of transitioning club to official
organization. No one assigned to “take on” this project, though members agree and plan to research
the process and what should be done.
• Big Point: If DFOK takes in money for leagues, events, etc. some portion of these monies should be
dedicated to course improvement / maintenance.
• Big Point 2: With the amount of effort, energy, and dedication DFOK puts into sponsoring tourna-
ments, making course improvements, etc. the club (and local courses) should be benefiting from these
activities.

Winter 2014 Virtual Bag Tag League

Official minutes from DFOK December meeting will be posted later today. In the meantime, I want to announce that DFOK will be running a winter VIRTUAL BAG TAG LEAGUE STARTING THIS SUNDAY (Dec. 7. 1:30 pm, Fairmont Park. Check in at 1:15). Also, it's a FREE league, so leave your money at home and just bring your discs, your friends, and your A game.

Thanks to everyone who posted on the online forum, WE HAVE GAINED A SEAT AT THE TABLE!!! This is a preliminary victory, but it's only chapter 1. Now that we've shouted loud enough to convince the parks and rec department to listen to us, we've gotta sit down and talk.

This community event is a THE MORE THE MERRIER EVENT, so bring your family, friends, coworkers, casual acquaintances, and disc golf rivals! The more people, the more representation we have of the wide variety of disc golfers in our community.

It's Flint Hills Open Tournament Week!

It's now Tournament Week in MHK, the Inaugural Flint Hills Open tournament!

Very Productive Workday at Fairmont Park Course

Shout out the following hearty souls who put in a lot of hard work at today's DFOK Workday. The focus was to address some much needed issues in the front 9 at the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course.
It was a very productive day. More was accomplished than anyone expected. The fairways receiving the most attention were Fairways 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, & 8.

Workday Reminder: Fairmont Park - Sunday Oct. 5th - 10:00 am

Tomorrow, Sunday October 5th, is the first workday in preparation for the Flint Hills Open disc golf tournament.
Time: 10:00 am - early afternoon (depending on how fast things go)

DFOK Donated to the Tuttle Creek / River Pond Course Project

It's official, the Sponsorship check from us (Disc Fanatics of Kansas) to sponsor one fairway in the Tuttle Creek State Park - River Pond Disc Golf Course Improvement project has been turned in.
The total amount way $500. Our hope is to sponsor fairway#12, as it appears to still be available. We should receive official word soon.

Apply remaining $274 of the 2013-2014 Bag Tag funds to sponsor a fairway (in conjunction with the $175 unclaimed 2012 Doubles League Ace Fund). When added up, $274+$175=$449.00, thus $51 more bucks will need to be raised by DFOK for us to sponsor a "full fairway" on the "Tuttle Project". No sweat!

Teach Disc Golf to Tourism Professionals.

I was recently contacted by the Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau, our sponsor of Fairmont fairway #18, to see if we (DFOK) can help teach the basics of Disc Golf at a specific event.
The date is the evening of Monday, October 13th. They will be hosting tourism professionals from across the state of Kansas and they want to offer Disc Golf as a topic for their visit.
Only a few members will be needed, so contact me if you are interested in hearing more... and maybe volunteering your time.

Hello All Disc Golfers,

The last time DFOK made a presentation (w/ Jon & I speaking) to the CITY Parks & Recreation Advisory Board regarding Warner Park Disc Golf, we were basically told to wait and participate in the upcoming City Comprehensive Parks Facilities & Program Study.
It appears the time for the City Study has arrived. The City is currently rolling out information about the upcoming study... Online forums, public meetings, email campaigns, etc. will follow.
I wish this wasn't coming up at the same time as the push (from another group) for improvements from at the State Park at Tuttle... However I have NO CONTROL over when the City is doing this study.
Good news is, I don't think the City's Study will be in direct "competition" with the current Tuttle project. The Study will NOT require money from us, just a lot of energy.
Question: Should "we" wait until we have more time later? Answer: NO.
We will need disc golfers to get involved in community wide online discussions & public meetings/activities to make it clear we need MORE DISC GOLF facilities in Warner (or some other City owned park), just to keep up with the growing demand for disc golf. It could very well be a point in time where we need to "speak now or forever hold our peace", regarding our requests from the City. In other words, if we don't speak up during this process it could be used against us in the future in a manner of "Too late, you didn't say anything back when we did that 2014 Study?".
Hopefully having both this campaign, and the other groups Tuttle project, going on simultaneously will create energy that feeds of each other.

When: Thursdays at 5:45. (Yes, Thursday not Wednesday | 5:45 because the days are getting shorter)
Where: Fairmont Park

Format: You and two randomly selected teammates will play best disc against the other teams. The twist is that the putt must be validated. To “hole out”, two members of the team must make the putt.

For those I won't get to see before I move, thanks for all the rounds we've played. It's been great. Let's keep in touch on Disc Golf Scene. Let me know if you'll ever be visiting the Pennsylvania area.
I would also like to encourage you all to get more involved in DFOK. I know we all prefer playing -- as opposed to meetings -- but the organizational piece is important, too. We have just gotten the ball rolling again to expand Warner, but that's not going to happen without a group effort from DFOK.
Rick Petrie and Mark Kewley have done so much for disc golf in the area, and they will continue to do so -- but as employees of the city they have potential conflict-of-interest issues in the push for Warner expansion. We need a few people to stand up and help to push forward. I was taking on that role, but obviously, I won't be able to continue. DFOK needs you!
I hope to visit Manhattan in a year or two and play the new nine at Warner!

Completion of the 2013-2014 DFOK Bag Tag & Points Leagues.

Wednesday, June 25th marked the end of the 2013-2014 DFOK Bag Tag & Points Leagues.
A total of 565 Official BAG TAG League rounds were played, spanning over 8 months, with 66 total participants. These league rounds, including scheduled league events & casual rounds, took place on a total of 7 known courses, in 3 states (Kansas, Missouri & Oregon).

Wednesday, June 25th marked the end of the 2013-2014 DFOK Bag Tag & Points Leagues.

All of the above described winners will receive a small prize to reward them for their accomplishment. Stay tuned for final details.

Fairmont: 1. Move baskets once per week when DFOK Doubles is temporarily moved to Fairmont (June/July). 2. Rick to donate time & materials to make one more steel cover (for #2 pin placement).

4. CLUB MISSION & BYLAWS, LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE, FINANCIAL STANDARDS, ETC.
Much discussion took place about ways to get more of the local players involved in DFOK admin. & meetings, outreach to new/beginner players, continue to improve DFOK financial documentation & processes.

5. OTHER TOPICS, TIME PERMITTING.
Most of this time was spent discussing topics in the following two categories.
(A) Hosting fun/test league formats from July to October of 2014.
(B) Options for, and benefits of, starting Annual DFOK Club Memberships in 2015.
The following Test / Fun league formats for DFOK to host in the upcoming months have been set:
JULY: "Worst Lie July" (Doubles league with a twist. You play the worst lie, as determined by the other team on your card).
AUGUST: "Triples with Validation" (Like standard doubles but with 3 person teams. Twist is 2 team members must make the last shot to close out a hole).
SEPTEMBER: "Super Class September" (Participants can only use PDGA Approved Super Class discs).
OCTOBER: "Awkward October" (Week 1: Cali League, Week 2: CTP League, Week 3: CTP League, Week 4: Ace Race League, Week 5: Ace Race League).
Note: A "virtual bag tag league" / "on-line only" test season will be conducted from September thru October. (I'll explain later)
NOVEMBER & DECEMBER: Focus on getting the details of the First Annual, 2015 DFOK Club Memberships ironed out.

Volunteers Needed on Thursday for "Get Around 2 It" Event

We need some folks to staff the DFOK table at "Get Around 2 It" this Thursday, May 1, from 5-8pm.

The event will be back at Blue Earth Plaza again this year, down in the redevelopment area south of downtown. We will answer questions about disc golf and DFOK, and hopefully, if we have enough room, we can give people the chance to do some putting.

I still need to find out where we are stationed, exactly, before we'll know what we can do, but I would appreciate it people woul ... more

Wednesday League Weather Rule Reminder.

With a rainy day ahead of us, I thought I'd remind people of our weather rules for the Wednesday league events.
Tonight's league event will take place if it is just raining.

However, as per official league rules, "League events may be canceled due to dangerous weather conditions. Cancellations will be based on Severe Weather WARNINGS issued by the National Weather Service."
In other words, if our area is going to be under a Severe Weather Warning during league tonight, league will be cancelled.

I will post said Cancellation here if & when a Weather Warning occurs.

DFOK Meeting Notes: Thursday, March 27th.

1. CLUB MISSION & BYLAWS, LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE, FINANCIAL STANDARDS, ETC.
A draft “Mission Statement” was presented by Rick. Members in attendance provided feedback on the draft. The topic will be revisited next month. Establishing & documenting a concise list of “DFOK Standard Operating Procedures” list was suggested by Rick. The concept of a list came up as a way to quickly get our procedures in writing, in a brief & ... more

1. CLUB MISSION & BYLAWS, LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE, FINANCIAL STANDARDS, ETC.
A draft “Mission Statement” was presented by Rick. Members in attendance provided feedback on the draft. The topic will be revisited next month. Establishing & documenting a concise list of “DFOK Standard Operating Procedures” list was suggested by Rick. The concept of a list came up as a way to quickly get our procedures in writing, in a brief & concise list form, until we establish official bylaws. This could help prevent future communication problems. Multiple “Financial Standards” were also discussed. At this point, all financial standards are associated to specific DFOK Leagues, rather than with the general operation of the club. However, in future years this will need to change if/when the club provides “club membership” options & benefits (beyond the current league memberships).
2. FAIRMONT CONSTRUCTION UPDATE.
A lot of progress has been made, by the Riley County Parks staff, on installing the permanent tee sign posts & signs in the last few weeks. To date, all but 7 of the 18 are installed. Riley County staff is scheduled to finish installing the tee signs & posts, plus the remaining 7 concrete tee pads this week (weather permitting of course). Lets cross our fingers no freak snow storms, or other emergency projects, affect their schedule before they finish at Fairmont Park.
3. LEAGUE UPDATES.
TWO amendments were proposed to the DFOK Bag Tag League rules. The 1st amendment was to begin issuing the DFOK Tags in sequential order after tag #50. The original rules were set to issue tags 51 thru 100 by random draw. It was moved & seconded to vote on the proposed amendment. The proposed change passed by a vote of 6-0 in favor of amending that rule. The 2nd amendment was to begin randomly grouping players at the weekly league by their division. Thus players would only play with people in their same division (Intermediate & Advanced). Much discussion took place about this topic. No motion was presented in favor of said change, thus no vote was taken. Also of note, at each DFOK Monthly Meeting, a Bag Tag League financial up-date will be provided.
MULTIPLE amendments were proposed to the DFOK Doubles League. Only the following were moved & seconded, then voted upon. The 1st Amendment was to publish an official League Payout Schedule (document) so players know what they will win based on their finishing place at a given league night. It was moved & seconded to vote on the proposed amendment. The proposed passed by a vote of 6-0 in favor of officially publishing said document. The 2nd Amendment was to establish an official weekly Player Sign-In Sheet to be used for this league (a master list, not to replace the scorecards). Many items to be recorded on said Sign-In Sheet were discussed. The information most discussed were as follows; Player’s name & e-mail address, paid status on that night’s Ace Fund (Y / N), current running total for Ace Fund, and number of participants present that night. It was moved & seconded to vote on the proposed amendment. The proposed change passed by a vote of 6-0 in favor of creating an official said document.
Reasoning discussed regarding the need for above described documents were (1) to document financial status if we were receive an inquiry from a player OR non-player, (2) to help participants better understand their risk/reward each night.
Potential Future Agenda Items for the DFOK Doubles League: Documentation/clarification of “Cali” rules, determine procedure for year end unclaimed Ace Fund balance.
4. COURSE BASKET ROTATION COMMITTEE(S).
Multiple people proposed to establish official club “Committees” to rotate baskets at the Warner Park & Fairmont Park disc golf courses. At this point, we have the privilege/responsibility to alternate pin placements when we decide. With the recent increase of pin placements, an increased number of volunteers are needed to helP. It was proposed to create one Basket Rotation Committee for Warner Park & one for Fairmont Park to move baskets Once Per Month. It was moved & seconded to vote on the proposed amendment. The proposed creation of above described committees, and to move the baskets one per month, passed by a vote of 6-0 in favor. Volunteers for each committee were as follows; Warner: Rick, Jon, Bill, Alan. Fairmont: Mark, Alan, Adam (by proxy), Rick (when needed).
5. WARNER PHASE II.
Jon provided an update on the club’s goal to work with the City of Manhattan to finish the Warner Park disc golf course project (18 holes). Jon is drafting a letter to send to the City requesting to be on an upcoming Manhattan Parks & Recreation Advisory Board Meeting agenda. More information will be provided at next months meeting.
6. OTHER TOPICS, TIME PERMITTING.
It was discussed and agreed upon (with no voting needed) for DFOK to once again have a "disc golf booth" at the (6th annual) “Get Around 2 It!” event. The event is hosted by the Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau to help people “discover all the great attractions, businesses and opportunities that await you in The Little Apple!” The event is scheduled for Thursday, on May 1st, at the Blue Earth Plaza. The K-State Disc Golf Club, may team up with DFOK to co-host the booth. More information will be provided at a later date.

The following items were discussed at March 6th (Thursday) DFOK meeting. Approx. 20 minutes were spent on each item, with some items being voted on regarding how to proceed as a Club. These items were not necessarily discussed in this order either.

The following items were discussed at March 6th (Thursday) DFOK meeting. Approx. 20 minutes were spent on each item, with some items being voted on regarding how to proceed as a Club. These items were not necessarily discussed in this order either.

2. More time was spent working on our club Mission, Bylaws, Leadership Structure, Financial Standards, etc. Two points of interest are to (A) document what has already been agreed upon in previous meetings, and (B) further think through additional documented needs. A draft document was reviewed to spark topics of conversation. A motion passed 3-0 in favor continuing this work at the Mar. 27 DFOK meeting.
3. An update on the DFOK’s Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course project was provided by Rick Petrie. Tee sign posts are being installed, a few non-concrete tee pads have been “slipping away from their intended location” (3, 7, 8 to name a few). On Mar. 11th, Riley County Parks will be asking for the funds from the Riley County Parks Board, to build the remaining 7 concrete tee pads. Exact install date is not known.
4. The Summer Points League will begin Wednesday night, March 12th, rather than “taking a week off”. As earlier decided (Nov. 2013), the Summer Points League will take place at Warner Park.
5. Warner Park Phase II Project was discussed at length. Major items discussed were the (A) project history, (B) park geographic boundaries, and (C) potential political approaches for moving forward. Jon volunteered to draft a letter to send to the City parks department, then to post the draft document to our DFOK Google Group for review.
6. The DFOK Doubles League was discussed at length. Topics discussed included (A) potential league format changes & (B) potential for generating funds for new equipment at the River Pond course. A motion passed 4-0 in favor of finalizing league rules at the Mar. 27 DFOK meeting.
7. A motion passed 4-0 in favor of hosting a DFOK Club table/booth, for the 4th year, at the upcoming “Get Around 2 It” event. This event is set to take place on May 1st, hosted by the Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau, located at the Blue Earth Plaza in downtown Manhattan.
8. The club web-site, dfok.us, will remain in place for another year until we determine if it is needed. Thus far, Mark Kewley has paid for this site to be up & running. Rick Petrie offered to help pay for the next subscription fee, is it is under consideration to be / not to be supported by DFOK funds.

Winter Storm Warning = No League SUNDAY

The Bag Tag & Points League events are CANCELED (until further notice) for this Sunday, March 3rd 2014!

As per official league rules, "League events may be canceled due to dangerous weather conditions. Cancellations will be based on Severe Weather WARNINGS issued by the National Weather Service."
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm WARNING for Saturday 6pm through Midnight Sunday Night for the Manhattan area. http://forecast.weather.gov/hazards/?wfo=top Thus league is canceled this Sunday.

Since we only have 2 weeks of Glow League left we have decided that we are gonna play 18 holes of glow out at Tuttle Creek this Tuesday. starting at 630 be there between 6 & 615 so we can get signed in and get things started. Make Room for the Workers on Friday

With the Ribbon Cutting & Ice Bowl right around the corner, Riley County will be sending multiple workers to Fairmont over the next couple days. Please be sure to make room for them as they work to finish up what's on their to-do list.

The most important part is as follows: They plan to "re-grade" the gravel disc golf parking lot... If you head to Fairmont Park on Friday please do not park in disc golf parking lot, especially if you see large equipment working on the parking lot.

An opportunity like this, to promote disc golf, does not come up very often in our community. Plus a couple good articles in the local newspaper could go a long way to shape future projects too! Until then, start thinking of all the positive experiences you've had playing disc golf. Think of examples of how it has changed your life... I know it has... be ready to share those stories with them.

After the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, there will be a charity disc golf tournament to benefit the Flint Hills Bread Basket. The tournament, called an “Ice Bowl”, will be co-hosted by the Lutheran Campus Ministry at KSU and the Disc Fanatics of Kansas disc golf club. The “Ice Bowl” disc golf tournament is part of a nationwide collection of disc golf events that are held each winter with an overall mission of raising funds to fight hunger. All interested parties are welcome to participate in the tournament.
The schedule for the day’s events is as follows;
Ribbon Cutting Schedule:
10:30am – 11:30am: Meet & Greet for Sponsors, County Officials, Players, etc.
11:30am – 12:00pm: Recognition Comments & Course Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.

Tomorrow, Monday the 20th will be a workday at Fairmont. I know this is short notice. Rick & I talked at work this week about cleaning some things up for the Ice Bowl / Fairmont Disc Golf Course Expansion Dedication on February 22nd.

Just a friendly little reminder, tomorrow is the scheduled Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course workday.
The focus will be to further cut back the little branches, stumps, etc. in the expansion area so as complete the intended fairway designs, haul out & pile up the already fallen brush (along #2 & #6), plus any other items that may arise.

On Tuesdays starting at 630 PM we play night golf using flashlights to illuminate the baskets and use LED lights, glow sticks, and glow in the dark discs what ever you can think of to light up your discs.$5 and I will have them at league night each week. Last time we played all 18 but due to the weather change and getting colder and snowy/rainy/icey we will just be playing the back 9. Some nights we will play the back 9 twice, ... more

Some nights we will play the back 9 twice, or rounds playing basket to basket, and some even playing a safari round which is play the first hole normal whoever wins gets to pick which basket we shoot to next, no matter the distance. Makes it for a lot of fun and a lot of different ways to play the same course. It's a good time and a great chance to play disc golf at night and with a fun group of guys, yeah it might be could but that's half the fun of a Winter Glow League. Bring $1 each week to pay towards the lighting of the baskets (batteries and flashlights) and each night we have an optional CTP (Closest to the pin) hole for a $1 closest to the pin on the designated hole gets the pot.

City Parks & Rec. Director Candidates - Tonight

Considering the large amount of planning and political hoops associated with working on the Warner Park course, it could be beneficial for us to have handful of disc golfers attend this event.

We wouldn't really even have to speak, unless called upon. Just making an appearance would help (yes, some of us are recognized as DG enthusiasts)... thus we'd make an impression on the City Officials in attendance that we're still very much interested in the future of DG in the City.

FAIRMONT COURSE CONSTRUCTION:
The official & permanent disc golf signage is still a work in progress. The map & sponsor artwork is completed for all of the 18 tee signs, plus a new "main sign". The project now rests in the hands of the Riley County Parks staff members and the sign contractor. They have started building the frame for the new main sign, however they have not started working on the tee signs.

Also, Riley County Parks has the required funds & approvals to build the remaining 9 concrete tee pads sometime in the near future. An exact date (or season) is unknown as of right now.

Rainy Day = Continued Progress at Fairmont

Shout out to Alan Fox for his time & effort spent at Fairmont Park today.
As part of the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course Expansion project, a third (long) pin placement was installed on fairway #6. However, prior to today it was not playable due to a few nasty brush piles that needed to be removed.
Alan found time today to work on moving the necessary brush piles in order to make this third pin placement playable just as it was designed.
In other words, you can look forward to seeing long #6 in place very soon!

By this weekend, we will be cleared by the County to install the final 2 pin placements at Fairmont Park. These two pin placements are Short #13 & Long #16. The work will amount to digging a hole at each location, hand mixing concrete for the base, then install the metal ground sleeve surrounded by concrete. They'll go really quickly... just a couple hours. Stay tuned for a date & time.

One week from tonight, a DFOK meeting will take place to iron out some pressing local matters.

When: THURSDAY SEPT. 26TH, at 5:30PM - 8:30PM (+/-).
Where: MANHATTAN PUBLIC LIBRARY (629 Poyntz Ave.)

The pressing club matters to address will be as follows:
1. Review & make final comments on the Fairmont Park Tee Sign artwork.
2. Review & vote on the prefered *ARTWORK* for the 2013-2014 DFOK Bag Tags.
3. Finalize the format & schedule for the 2013-2014 DFOK Bag Tag and Points Leagues.
4. Other topics, time permitting.

*ARTWORK*: Just like in previous years, we need front & back Bag Tag artwork for the upcoming 2013-2014 Season. Bring a print out of your concepts, or e-mail electronic artwork to [email redacted], prior to 3:00pm Thursday for consideration.
The DFOK Bag Tag must contain the following information.
- Text reading "2013-2014 Season"
- Our DFOK logo (like seen on this page)
- Generally speaking use Green, Black & White colors.
- A extremely visible tag number in a color contrasting with it's background.
- Tags 1 thru 10 larger "portrait" oriented tag numbers. (like last year)
- Tags 11 thru 100 smaller "landscape" oriented tag numbers. (like last year)
- The circle Discs Unlimited logo on the back, as they will be our co-sponsor again this season.
- The tags will once again be in the 3"x4" size, so keep that size ratio in mind.

Discraft ACE Race

Earlier in the year there was a scheduled event in the Manhattan area (Tuttle Creek, River Pond). Now that event is not on the Discraft site and nothing has been posted about the event. If there is enough interest in a local ACE Race we could still put this together. RevKev and LCM are on board again if people want to do this. We are almost out of time though. The Newest Disc Golf Course in RL County?

Thursday evenings activities totaled three hours of work, completing the following tasks.
1. Installation of 18 temporary tee signs. (18 permanent tee signs & a new main sign will be installed this fall)
2. Covered (bagged) the old tee signs. (They will be removed by RL Co. Parks very soon)
3. Assembled the 10 new Innova DISCatcher Pro permanent baskets.
4. Moved 4 of the existing DISCatcher Pro baskets to their new home (#1, #5, #6, #9).
5. Installed 10 new DISCatcher Pro baskets... some to their new home, some to a *temporary spot.

Note: A few baskets are in temporary spots w/ temporary numbers on them. This is because our 19 new matching pad locks are on back-order, thus we can not make all the existing/new basket swaps just yet... sorry for the inconvenience. (I can elaborate if needed).

Once again, thanks to everyone who has worked on this project so far. A lot of hours by a lot of people have been put into course design, fundraising, construction planning, and last but not least manual labor. However, if you feel like you've missed out in helping, there's more work planned to get this course up to A+ shape. Stay tuned for details on those mini-projects.

Thanks to the hard work by the disc golfers listed below, a dramatic change was made at the course. Many of these players put in a 12 hour day of back breaking work, some barely stopping to eat lunch & postponing dinner until sunset.

Yesterday’s workday specifically accomplished the following course installations & relocations throughout the expanse of the new course area.
25 installed new style Ground Equipment (ground sleeves protected by irrigation boxes & lids)
5 relocated existing style Ground Equipment (exposed sleeves) moved to their new locations.
5 relocated existing Baskets to new pin placements.
The old Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course is currently playable as a 7 hole course with some new placements. (old Fairway #4’s ground sleeve & basket is now in its new home).
Note: Two additional pin placements may be installed at a later date.

The actual work completed yesterday sets the stage for the new basket and signage installs that will transform the course into an actual 18 hole course. The new course will include 34 pin placement options, 18 new & improved Tee Signs, a new course Main Sign, plus a practice area with a dedicated practice basket (19th basket in the park).

An actual date for the much anticipated install of the 10 new baskets is not yet known. This date is pending our club receiving the final necessary equipment from Riley County Parks. I believe it is safe to say, we will be able to put the 10 baskets in place ON OR BEFORE SATURDAY, AUGUST 10TH.

What: Install 26 new disc golf ground sleeves (in concrete), plus relocate as many of the existing ground sleeves (with baskets) as time permits.
When: 9:00am Saturday, but you can come & go as your schedule allows. There will be work going on throughout the day for you assist with.
Where: Meet in the "old" disc golf parking lot. We ... more

We are on-track to host the first round of Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course Workdays next weekend, on August 3rd & 4th, 2013.

Fairmont Course Expansion - One (Call) Step Closer

After today, we are One(call) step closer to installing disc golf equipment at Fairmont Park.

The utility locate company ( http://www2.usicinc.com ) was on the scene today marking the underground utilities that could be in conflict with our proposed Basket and Tee Pad locations.

Good News: From what I've seen so far, none of our proposed placements appear to be in jeopardy du ... more

The utility locate company ( http://www2.usicinc.com ) was on the scene today marking the underground utilities that could be in conflict with our proposed Basket and Tee Pad locations.

Good News: From what I've seen so far, none of our proposed placements appear to be in jeopardy due to underground utilities. I will need to take a closer look, then confirm with RL County Parks that we're good to go.

The next step for us as a group will be to make our final tweaks to our desired pin placements, then tell the County that we're ready for them to dig the holes. For the most part, the wooden laths you've seen in the park is the exact spot for baskets. However a hand full are in general locations in order to get the best utility locate coverage.

With that in mind, I will be going to Fairmont Park tomorrow evening & Saturday morning to finalize the exact locations. If you are concerned about any potential locations, please plan to attend or send me a message describing your ideas/concerns.

Let's shoot for 6:00pm Thursday evening, then 9:00am Saturday morning. We'll start on #1 & look at every hole, in order, one at a time through #18.

Fairmont Course Expansion Update - July 18, 2013.

I've got a quick update regarding the progress of the 4 required "Steps" that were outlined earlier this week.

Step 1. Riley County Parks has started the process of getting the underground utilities located & marked. However, it may take the locate company(s) until next Wednesday (24th) to get all of them marked. If the timing plays out that way (at best), that would only allow Thursday & Friday of next week to get Steps 2 & 3 completed.

Good News:
At this point in time, I believe Step #4 (obtaining the concrete & irrigation boxes) will not be a problem. I've been told that should be on-hand by next week.

Fairmont Course Expansion Update - July 15, 2013.

I am going to make this News about the Fairmont Disc Golf Course Expansion Project Update as quick as possible.

Our baskets & ground sleeves are in route, being delivered by common carrier from Innova (in South Carolina). They should arrive late this week. However, BEFORE we can install the ground sleeves at the park, the following needs to occur.

I am going to make this News about the Fairmont Disc Golf Course Expansion Project Update as quick as possible.

Our baskets & ground sleeves are in route, being delivered by common carrier from Innova (in South Carolina). They should arrive late this week. However, BEFORE we can install the ground sleeves at the park, the following needs to occur.

Step 1. Riley County Parks staff will get the underground utilities marked on-site in the areas where we want baskets installed. This is done by contacting the utility locate service(s), a.k.a. Dig Safe, and potentially meeting with a utility company representative.
Step 2. Have member(s) of our course design team designate final/precise basket locations, in order to avoid the above described utilities. Don't worry, they should end up very close to where the wooden laths are currently located.
Step 3. Riley County Parks staff come "drill" the 2' deep holes for the basket locations. They plan to use a large auger bit mounted on a bobcat, which will save all of a lot of time.
Step 4. Riley County Parks staff purchase the necessary bags of concrete, plus the irrigation "valve boxes" w/ lids, used to securely mount the ground sleeves.

Three of the four items described above are in the hands of Riley County Parks. I have offered our assistance, but there's just some things they have to do themselves. Their manager has told me they plan to get them done by our planned workdays of July 27th & 28th... if not, surly everything will fall into place by August 3rd & 4th.

So, please keep those dates free if at all possible... and now you know why the exact dates of the workdays are not yet set.

I'll be sure to post firm dates as soon as they become reality.

Also taking place today, Riley County Parks staff worked on the following:
Some additional spraying of poison ivy in the expansion area, with a special focus on fairways #2 & #6.
Cutting of the standing trees we marked (months ago) on #2 & #6. Many of these were dead & dangerous "leaners".
Cutting of the downed trees, aka logs, laying in fairways #2 & #6. Many of these will be used to define fairway boundaries & trail edges.

The Innova equipment will be here before we know it. Stay tuned for more details about pending club workdays to get the new course equipment installed. At this point, it is looking like those workdays will be on some of the following days: July 27th & 28th, and/or Aug. 3rd & 4th.

Yes, there will be other equipment installed as part of this project. However, the focus of this News is on the baskets.

Fairmont Course Expansion - Utility Locate Signage / Dig Safe Request.

As described in the DFOK News from the June 27th meeting, today was our clubs day to mark the approx. locations (50' +/-) for our proposed improvements. These locations/improvements includ the following:
- All 18 tee box locations. However, only 11 tee boxes will be built by RL County this time around.
- All basket locations, including alternate pin placements.
- The practice basket (19th basket on the course).
- The Main Sign.

As described in the DFOK News from the June 27th meeting, today was our clubs day to mark the approx. locations (50' +/-) for our proposed improvements. These locations/improvements includ the following:

Keep in mind this is only part of the pre-construction investigation process know as a "utility locate", aka Dig-Safe buried utility marking. These are general locations, within 50', of where we want to install equipment. Plus if needed, the utility locate companies will come out to re-fresh their old marks, or even mark areas not previously marked.

While playing the Fairmont Disc Golf Course, you will now notice many wooden "laths" with orange tape on them indicating the areas described above. Please do not hit with discs, or tamper with these pieces of wooden lath, as we want them to stay in place for a quite while now... maybe until we get the new equipment installed.

Note: There may be a few more alt. pin placements marked (15) than we can afford at this time, plus a few better pin placements may become evident in the coming weeks. When combining those factors with the currently unknown buried utility impacts, the exact pin placements are still a work in progress.

The following are the DFOK Meeting Decisions from Last Night (6/27).

In order to assist Riley County Parks staff in getting the Fairmont Park "utility locate" process started, all interested DFOK members will meet at Fairmont Park to flag the likely locations of pin & tee box placements. The phrase "utility locate" is used to describe when the the "dig safe" technicians mark where you can't dig due to buried utilities. This meeting was scheduled to take place on SUNDAY, JUNE 30th AT 9:00AM. Keep in mind, this is only so a third party can show where buried utilities are located, then we can make our final decisions on where baskets & tee pads will be located.
Note: Only 11 tee pads will be constructed by Riley County this time around. The following 7 will be constructed later in the year, or later.

5. Much discussion went into figuring out (a) how to recognize the $50 Group Sponsorship participants on the main sign while staying within the confines of our widely distributed Sponsorship Flyer, also (b) how to fit all the Fairmont sponsors names (old & new sponsors) into one area on the New Main sign. It was suggested that it would work the best if all 10 of the $50 sponsors were shown on the same tee sign (#4). Then those two groups would we needed to decide if they are okay with being recognized on the main sign under one nickname for their group OR should it be under two separate nicknames on the main sign. In other words, we need to hear back from members (or representatives) from each of the 2 Group Sponsorship donors, in order to make a final decision.

1. Please continue thinking of new twists that can be added, plus any refinements to the basic framework that may be needed. Then bring those ideas to the meeting. All good options will be considered, the decided upon in a group decision.

2. Just like in years past, we need front & back bag tag artwork for the upcoming 2013-2014 Season. Bring a print out of your concepts, or e-mail electronic artwork to [email redacted] prior to 3:00pm Thursday for consideration.
The DFOK Bag Tag must contain the following information.
- text reading "2013-2014 Season"
- our DFOK logo (like seen on this page)
- generally speaking use Green, Black & White colors.
- a extremely visible tag number in a color contrasting with it's background.
- tags 1 thru 10 larger "portrait" oriented tag numbers. (like last year)
- tags 11 thru 100 smaller "landscape" oriented tag numbers. (like last year)
- the circle Discs Unlimited logo on the back.
Note: The tags will once again be in the 3"x4" size, so keep that size ratio in mind.

3. Riley County Parks is about ready to "call in utility locates" for our expansion project at Fairmont Park. In order to make sure we get all the areas we're considering for basket & tee pad placements marked for existing utilities, we will need to go mark those (general) spots ourselves. A few other items will be discussed, but this is the most timely of the items.

4. Time permitting, continue to work towards finalizing any remaining items associated to the Recognition, Fundraising, and Signage part of the project. Discuss any questions about donor recognition, update where we stand on fundraising, and review a rough draft of the main sign. This topic will probably require a specific meeting next week.

Five more individuals came together and presented funds, as a group, on Tuesday for our Fairmont Course Expansion Sponsorship Campaign.

Alan Fox & Scott Collins coordinated this second Group Sponsorship effort, which will be paying for one of the two remaining Half Fairways. Not all of this group's donation forms have been completed, so I'm not yet going to post the names. However the required $250 was submitted Tuesday night, thus locking them in as official sponsors. Here is a quick 2013-2014 Points & Bag Tag League Rules meeting reminder.

Also, we need a new design for the upcoming DFOK Bag Tags. So for those of you who are talented (or even not so much) with graphic arts, please work up a draft bag tag and bring it to the meeting. The necessary parameters are listed below.

The DFOK Bag Tag must contain the following information.
- text reading "2013-2014 Season"
- our DFOK logo (like seen on this page)
- generally speaking use Green, Black & White colors.
- a extremely visible tag number in a color contrasting with it's background.
- tags 1 thru 10 larger "portrait" oriented tag numbers. (like last year)
- tags 11 thru 100 smaller "landscape" oriented tag numbers. (like last year)
- the circle Discs Unlimited logo on the back.
Note: The tags will once again be in the 3"x4" size, so keep that size ratio in mind.

DFOK, as a group, has already committed money it's raised (at the 3-headed monster tourney and various other ways) to sponsor half a fairway, and it will most likely be sponsoring another half. But members of DFOK have also become sponsors on their own.

Hey, DFOK Folks,

We are getting to a point in the Fairmont fund-raising process where things could be wrapped up pretty quickly, or they could drag out for a while. Either way, we need to remain active and organized.

DFOK, as a group, has already committed money it's raised (at the 3-headed monster tourney and various other ways) to sponsor half a fairway, and it will most likely be sponsoring another half. But members of DFOK have also become sponsors on their own.

For those of us who would like to do more, but don't have the funds available, there is another option: group sponsorships. Aaron Warnke got the ball rolling with $50 toward a group sponsorship. I am interested in doing the same thing, and I encourage others to join us.

Five people at $50 each sponsors half a fairway, and ten could sponsor a whole fairway.

As with all sponsorships, checks and cash will go directly to Riley County, and sponsors will receive an individualized receipt. I would like to collect a number of checks and turn them in all at once, to make things easier for the county and make sure we are clear on who is helping to sponsor what fairway (or half fairway).

DFOK has been working with the County on how the signs will look, and it seems as though there may be room for the individual names of group sponsors to be included. If space becomes too limited, we can always choose some kind of group name for the signs. Either way, we would be helping to move the project forward.

These sponsorships will be valid for as long as the course exists. For the cost of about 3 new discs, or one tournament entry, you can be part of something that will last a lifetime or more.

There aren't that many fairways left, so we should get on this. Please let me know -- soon -- if you are interested.

2013-2014 Bag Tag & Points League Planning

With last seasons 2012-2013 DFOK Bag Tag & Points Leagues in the rear view mirror, it's time to finalize the details for the up-coming 2013-2014 season.

With that in mind, the following has been established.
1. Discs Unlimited, of Herrington KS, will be co-sponsoring these two DFOK leagues.
2. A total of 100 sequentially numbered tags will be ordered for the 2013-2014 season.
3. Once again this season, a "Bag Tag Artwork Competition" will be held to come up with our 2013 ... more

Thursday, June 27th. a DFOK Meeting will be held to finalize all of the necessary details to get the 2013-2014 Bag Tag & Points Season started. In other words, league rules of play will be set & the bag tag artwork will be chosen at that night (by vote). Please mark your calendar for Thursday June 27th, from 5:30pm to 8:00pm (approx end time) at the Manhattan Public Library located at 6th Street & Poyntz Ave.

Last Weekend's Final Financial Numbers.

One week later, all the numbers are finally in.

Here’s the financial stats regarding last weekend’s DFOK Fundraising Disc Golf Tournament.
$295 raised in player entry fees (59 players x $5 per player = $295)
$125 raised in optional “dot dollar” mulligan donations (23 players X $5 per player = $115)
$ 20 donation in kind from a player.

One week later, all the numbers are finally in.

Here’s the financial stats regarding last weekend’s DFOK Fundraising Disc Golf Tournament.

Also newsworthy on Saturday was the presentation of the funds generated by this winter’s DFOK Glow League. Each player at this winter's glow league was encouraged to donate $1, per round attended, to further disc golf in the area. The result of these donations totaled $61.

When all added up, the weekend resulted in raising a total of $491 for the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Expansion Project!

Remember, the usual Warner Wednesday league activities will be CANCELED if the following occurs
1. National Weather Service issues a Severe Weather WARNING.
2. Notable lightning in the area.
Both of these apply if they occur just prior to the normal start to, or during, the league round.

However, if it's only rain the league events will be played as scheduled.

Fairmont Course Expansion - Fairway Sponsorship Campaign

This week the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course Expansion Project took a very important step forward. The Riley County Commission officially approved us to begin our Sponsorship Fundraising Campaign for the project.

This week the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course Expansion Project took a very important step forward. The Riley County Commission officially approved us to begin our Sponsorship Fundraising Campaign for the project.

Here are the basics of our Sponsorship Fundraising Campaign.
Riley County Parks and the Disc Fanatics of Kansas are both going to be purchasing equipment for the expansion project. Our club is responsible for raising $4500 in order to cover what we’ve agreed to fund.

In order to raise the $4500 amount, we are offering Fairway Sponsorship opportunities.
Depending on the sponsorship amount, contributors may be recognized on our new main course sign and on a tee sign for one fairway. The fee to sponsor a “full fairway” is $500, the fee to sponsor a “half fairway” is $250. Recognition of other sponsorship levels will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Checks will be made payable to “Riley County Parks”, with "Disc Golf" on the memo line. Sponsorship opportunities are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Organizations and individuals can be Fairway Sponsors. It is our responsibility to find them. If you identify an organization or individual who is seriously interested in being a Fairway Sponsor, please contact me (Rick Petrie) ASAP, so I can get a copy of our project Information Sheet & the Sponsorship Form to you.

Fairmont Workday This Saturday, April 20th.

Are you excited about the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course expansion project?
Do you want to learn more about it? Do you want to help bring it closer to reality?

If so, please consider attending this Saturday's course workday.

WHO: You and your fellow disc golfers. Bring other friends too... anybody can be helpful.
WHAT: Continue working on fairways #2 & #6, plus some minor work on a couple other fairways.
