Ok that last post was way to short - I know some one you were surprised.

I realized I never said the magic words - Our DGLA Michigan Disc Golf League Winter 2015 Champion is ..... Sam Smith - Congratulation Sam - Great play again this winter.
I also wanted to recognize those who really took on the Winter and despite one of the coldest and snowiest in many years kept coming out and enjoying getting together with friends, competing and letting off steam. No matter how cold or how deep that snow got. I know we have several weeks with at least 12 + inches and -28 F was the coldest I heard of and felt myself and many others played in many rounds with below zero wind chill - What a winter.
Here is the list by number of overall rounds played including dropped rounds.
279 players of the 363 played only once during the season.
39 players of the 363 players had 14 or more rounds. That is at least one a week and I say that puts you in the Die hard club. Your all listed below.
7 players had more than 28 rounds - two per week for the 14 weeks - You guys are Animals -love playing with you gentlemen - looking forward to Spring play and even more rounds in the sun and warmth.

I like to look at how many rounds players actually played and what it takes to make it into the top spots. Now given we cap the weekly rounds at Two per week to try and balance things out it's always interesting to look at number or rounds and player pt average per round to try and identify the sleepers who if they could just get a few more rounds in at their current pt/round total they would be up near the top - but just just never know .....
so in the top ten the average points per round average is between 22.8 & 40.69 pts per round. If I order the players who have at least six rounds by their point per round average here are the top players who did not make the top ten but could have if they had just a few more rounds in this season....
Current position, Player, Pts, # of Rounds, Average PTs/Round

41 grant ward 309 11 28.09090909
73 Connor Gortsema 224 8 28
Now the highest points per round average was 40.69 pts /round by Ryan Herzog in 10th place with 13 rounds.
soit shows that you have to get out and try to get your two rounds per week in if you really want a chance to be in the top ten.
What else helps. Wins, Aces and Double Points
Ok let's take a quick look at what it takes to make it in the top Ten of 363 players during the Michigan Winter - First lets look at the average of the key stats of the top ten players:
Average stats for top ten players
627.4 Avg PTS.
30.1 # of total Rounds 2.2 Avg Rounds / week
23.6 # of Rounds Counted 1.7 Avg Rounds / week
22.912 Average Points per Rounds
27.270 Average Points per Counted rounds
7.2 Wins
0.4 Aces
15.9 Rounds with Double Points
Min Point to be in the Top ten: 529
Max points 846
so 317 points separated tenth place from first place.
It's always interesting to see how much Aces come into play with 25 points per Ace which can be equivalent to an extra round in many cases.
The average was 0.4 and that was because only one player in the top ten had any aces at all, but he had 4 and even two in one round. Got to love that Glow at Bandemer. Really nice shooting Sam Smith for an extra 100 extra points for the season.
Now even without the Ace points Sam still had first place locked up by 24 points. Now that is just one rounds worth of winter points so those Aces did add a nice buffer. The Killer as Phil Common who has had a great consistently strong season was trying to regain after we notice the two round a week max rule had not be turned on at the beginning and his massive point accumulation for all his many rounds was re-adjusted. But as the great competitor he is he took it in stride and said "Oooooo Man....But hey I want it to be fair and legit for all....Got some work to do these last 6 weeks" and he did just that. But Sam threw three Aces in the last two weeks as well as his 13 win versus Phil's 10 just was to much to recover from. What a shoot out between these two amazing players. I'd also like to commend Phil for stepping up and running a new Glow league on Mondays nights - giving it back to the players. Both of these players lend a hand when ever the need arises. I'm thrill to be awarding them the Two DGLA Player Winter berths for this season. Great play and great playing with you guys always.

** Leagues can always run outside the MiCPS dates but MiCPS points will only accumulate for rounds played between these dates.
During a week (Sunday to Saturday) points are calculated for each participating league round you play. The highest TWO point total from a participating league are added into your total and the others are "dropped". Summer Aces are worth 25 points even if that league round is dropped. League round points are basically calculated by adding 2 points for participation and one point for every player you beat and if there is no tie for first place the winner gets 2 additional points for being the "Out Right Winner". Now that basic calculation are further adjusted to encourage small leagues and balance out larger leagues using three levels; 4-19 players, 20-59, and 60+ players. The points awarded are different for each group. The smaller league rounds will get a guaranteed max point total the same as 20 players, the middle size league round are calculated as described above and the larger league rounds have a cap with max points being set to 60 players.
Scores must be entered the same as leagues determine payouts; If Divisions are used for payouts than scores must be entered by division. If handicaps are used for payouts then the handicap adjusted scores must be entered.
Highlighted Leagues of the Week (HLW) - We will again have Double Points rounds for each league who desires to have a HLW. We realize some leagues do no like to have a bunch of visiting players so you don't have to have a HLW but for those who like increase their payouts, increase the challenge, increase the comrade and boast the fun and Double the points - please send your desired HLW date and we will highlight your league events before that round and that round will be worth double points to all who play. HLW can be any time after May 10th.
We will have a DGLA award for the player who plays the most HLW in a given month - May, June & July

It's a great time to look back at the different Winter seasons to see how things are progressing and so at a high level I looked at the number of players and number of leagues participating as we wrap up our 5th Winter MiCPS.
Note when we started we used to try and grab all posted Michigan leagues and add them to the point Series to help ensure they were aware of the MiCPS and to try and reach one of our goals to bring all the Michigan leagues together so all players could see all the different leagues and players through the state. A few leagues had expressed they did not want this so we posted that the Point Series is now an Opt In event and unfortunately this has led to some leagues not make it in but the overall player numbers still grows per league - AWESOME!
2010/11 361 total players 14 participating leagues
2011/12 349 total players 15 participating leagues
2012/13 475 total players 29 participating leagues
2013/14 450 total players 32 participating leagues
2014/15 354 total players 18 participating leagues Not done yet ;-)
OK we have a one week from this Saturday until the Winter season is over and we can get out the Shorts and t-shirts and enjoy warmer weather rounds - I'm optimistic ;-) Forget that Rodent movie star....
********************************
Last day of the season for Rounds: Feb 28th
Cut-off for league rounds posting and updates: March 7th
********************************
Yes after the the last rounds on Saturday Feb 28th leagues will have one week to wrap up their round postings and any updates. We will then review the posted comments to try and determine the Coldest Round and Deepest Snow Round for Triple Points and then the Leaderboard will be locked.
At that time we will also review the DGLA player leaderboard and award the Top Two Players by points who do not already have Mi Discraft State Championships berths for this November. We will award the remaining 4 berths after the Summer Season. Per our tradition one is garanteed to the Top Women and the other three to the top players by Points who do not already have berths. We will also calculate the awards and since we did not reach 40 or more player (16 players for Winter) they all will be awarded some level of DGLA award. Since we did not do player packages this year we will have extra DGLA Bucks to be awarded. These 16 players are also already in for the Summer season at no additional cost - Cha Ching - even more Ching.
This is also a great time to get feedback on the Winter season:
1) Was the 14 week season just right? Should is start earlier, end later, shorter or longer?
(Nov 23rd to Feb 28th )
2) Did you like the additional Double Points for 2" or more snow during a Round?
3) Any other feedback or suggestions are welcomed - help improve your MiCPS
For the MiCPS-Summer 2015 - It was suggested last year to start later to give more time for all the leagues to start their summer season and not start already behind in points.
Last year we did Apri 6th - July 26th 14 weeks.
We have tried to end a few weeks before the Mi Discraft State Championships so that Berths are awarded in enough time and players can decide how they prepare.
This year we are looking at making the season a bit longer but start just a little later:
April 12th - Aug 1st - a 16 week season
With a little over a week left here is how the top 20 of the overall leaderboard is looking.

Well with little more than a week to go in the MiCPS-Winter season I was looking over the comment Posts to try and see who is in the running for the Coldest Round & Deepest Snow Round of the season for Triple points. So far many cold and snowy rounds - actually since the first Double Point round Dec 29th through Feb 16th there have been 47 rounds posted here for Double Points.
The deepest Snow round is going to be tough to determine based on what is posted - looks like several posts with 12" + inches..... It just maybe the next snow fall since most of that 12" + is still hanging around - may have to get the rulers out or call this one a draw.... Several more days to go.....keep your snow shovels handy
The coldest so far that I see in the list, and I actually felt myself, was -28 (-4 ambient with 16 MPH sustained winds = -28 wind chill - feels like) Rolling Hills February 15, 2015 10:30am Ypsi Dubs 2014/15 Winter League -={Church}=-
Still some great Mi Winter rounds ahead before it's all over. Glow rounds have the odds on favorite since the colder temps normally are in the evening but that is not always the case. Looks like WC Glow this Wednesday night may have a good shot at Triple points as well. Calling for -10 windchill by 11:00 with 8 mph winds - into the -20 something in the wee hours - you never know what will happen.

So we all know that the Point Series just keeps your best two rounds per week (Sunday - Saturday) to try and balance those who can play often with those who are not so fortunate. This does have an impact on the points and where players end up on the leaderboard. One way to try and get insight to who are the other top players but who just can't seem to get out to maximize their round count and there by potentially maximizing/increasing their point total, is to look at Average Points per Round.
Only 3 of the top players by Pts/Rnd average are actual in the top 20 overall.
Jeff White took advantage of Double Points for both of his two rounds at Hudsonville League of Champions - 2015 with one 1st place and one second place finishes for a 36 Pts/Rnd average. Geoff Bennett had 1st place finishes for all three of his rounds, two of which were for Double Points earning him a 40.6666 Pts/rnd average. The highest Pts/Rnd average I have seen so far is John "Johnny Mac" McClenahan 44 points in one round and only one round. 19 points for a 3rd place at GLOW SKINS, Firefighters Park but a nice Winter Ace on hole 2 for 25 extra points.
Here are the Top 20 players in order of Pts/Rnd average. Nice play guys

======================================
The Average Pts./Rnd for the top 10 is 18.913 points in an average of 15.5 rounds each.
Looking at some stats and trends the first thing I notice is the difference between 20th and the top three positions on the overall leaderboard. Top three players average 23 rounds so far and 20th-15th average 8 rounds so far. That is a difference of 15 rounds and the Point Gap from 20th to 1st is 323 pts.
I also went through and looked at the Top 20 to see how many Wins, and how many Double Points Rounds and also Aces.
Only two players have Aces in the Top 20, Brian Fahnestock, GLOW SKINS Firefighters Park Hole 9 & samuel smith, Night Moose Fall/Winter 2014/2015, Willow Metropark Hole 17.
The highest Pts/Rnd Average in teh top 20 was Brooke Plantz with a 25.42857143 pts/Rnd Avg.
Most Wins - samuel smith with 7 so far.
Most Double Points - 6 attended by Phil "Puttimus Prime" Common
The top three have significantly more rounds than anyone else. Then between them Total Wins are a differentiator and the single Ace doesn't hurt Sam's point total either ;-)
Great consistent Great play guys.
There are 7 weeks remaining. Let's see who is at the top at the end of the season.

If you play in a Michigan League between Nov 23rd and Feb 28th make sure the league has been added to the MiCPS-Winter. Just send us a link to the League's About page and we will add it. There is no cost to the league, no extra effort by the league, leagues can use what ever system for points as the MiCPS calculates it's points independently. There still is a limitation that for handicapped leagues you must post the adjusted scores that are used for payouts. Hopefully one day soon we will have a new option for this but all of Santa's Elves are currently working on higher priority projects.
*************** Important date ****************
January 15th 2015 - deadline for adding new leagues to the Winter Point Series.
***********************************************
DGLA Player members - closed - maybe one or two that talked to me that I have missed - contact me ASAP.
Watch for message on DGS about player packages and options we are voting on.
Payout split Winter/Summer: 50/50 versus 2/3 winter & 1/3 Summer + New members.
Points now recalculated and using 3 tier point calculation; 20 or less players in a round - 20 pts for first place and counts down - helps smaller leagues (smallest leagues: singles need min. 4 players, Doubles need 3 w/Cali). League rounds with 21 - 60 players - normal points calculation. Great than 60 players is capped at 60 pts - normally not a factor during the Winter season.
Dropped Rounds - I'm sure I will get several message about "Why is one of my Rounds listed as Dropped?" and for all you regular you know that the MiCPS uses your best two rounds per week (Sunday through the following Saturday) to try and balance things between those who can play many rounds and those who can only get out to one or two.
Monthly awards - Many of you have seen more Disc Golf Scene Bling in on your profile for Weekly and monthly achievements - Thanks Pete and Disc Golf Scene and the MiCPS. Congrats to all those who have achieved these awards. In January and February we will have some actual awards for some of these monthly awards - more in a future post but keep playing and achieving. It al pays off in many ways and with the generosity of previous DGLA Players members who donated back some of their winnings we will try to extend some of these goodies/awards to all the players.
Berths - Yes DGLA has secured several berths again and so we will offer 2 up for grabs for Winter for the DGLA Player members who help fund these berths for those who have not already won a berth. More shortly.

So what is happening out in our leagues and what does it take to be listed in the top Twenty of all the Winter Michigan Disc Golf League players?
Top 20 so far
What do you need to be in the top 20?
At least 4 rounds with an average of 17.5 points per round or maybe an Ace or two. But more rounds is always better.
This would mean to beat the current top player, if Sam Smiths trends hold true all 14 week it is looking like you have to average about 18.7 rounds that count and probably around 38.5 rounds for the 14 week season - good luck ;-)

Why is my round marked as "DROPPED"?
MiCPS automatically keeps your best TWO rounds per week (Sunday - Saturday) when calculating your MiCPS total points. This is automatically recalculated whenever new scores/rounds are posted or scores are updated. Get out and play as much as you can to increase your skill and maximize your points but if you are limited to how often you can play your goal would be to try and get at least two rounds per week.
Winter Aces: Worth 25 points

This year clubs/leagues must Opt-In to the MiCPS. Meaning any player or league admin of a league who wants to get MiCPS-W points for their regular league rounds needs to ensure that they post on the MiCPS-W Comments page or send a message to one of the league admin. Please include the link to the league page, it is really helpful to reduce effort and mistakes - Thanks
Also this year leagues can join and decide if they want to have a Highlighted League of the Week (HLW) or not. Some feedback that not all clubs/league are set-up to accommodate extra players or non-regular players. We understand. Now to help reach our mission to encourage more play and to help spread the good ideas, the HLW was designed to provide extra visibility of what each league does so that the ideas can be looked at to see what if anything others can try to enhance the experience of their players. Players also get extra points - Double Points! as well as we try to acknowledge those players who try to attend the most HLW as possible and look at how that affects their points and performance. But we also promote different formats and types of leagues and so we try to accommodate adding more without adding addition work to the league admin or negatively impact them in any way.
In the past many players of the Winter Point Series have enjoyed a temperature incentive, Double Points for rounds played where the (Feels Like - with Wind chill) Temperature is below 15 degrees F. If your willing to challenge the Polar Vortex you deserve some reward.
Another suggestion recently was to add a Snow Incentive - If during your round you play in 2" or more, or 2" accumulates by the end of the round, Double Points.
Do you and your friends exchange stories about who played in the deepest snow or coldest temps? We hope we can help determine that for the state and provide some extra exposure for those who played and survived. When you post and you think it was extreme provide the average fairway snow depth and the actual coldest temp you encountered during the round (links to pictures would be AWESOME) and at the end of the season we will go back and update the schedule for the deepest snow and coldest temp during a winter League round and those two rounds for the state will get TRIPLE points and the bragging rights until next year. I survived winter 2014 - Bring on that Polar Vortex.... Lake effect welcomed. But I'm betting on the Yoopers for these records but it could happen any place in Michigan ....
If either Temp or Snow depth meet the criteria post in the comments section (league name, date & temp or snow depth) and by the end of the week we will update the schedule to show the Double Points - maybe Triple points for the luck few who survive the coldest & deepest wrath of the 2015 Polar Vortex..... Anyone who played in the round can make the post. The double points will be updated right before the weekly and monthly stats lock for the leaderboard. If someone posts late we will still update and the players will get the double points toward their overall point total but the weekly and monthly leaderboards lock 2 days after the week or month. Weeks run from Sunday to Saturday for weekly leaderboards and Best Two rounds of the week.
I'm excited that in Ohio and Oregon we have been able to add some local players to the State-wide Point Series Staff in those states. We welcome those who would like to be more involved from just helping to spread the word while playing rounds, to collecting ideas, questions and News that we can discuss and share with others to help grow disc golf and leagues, and even helping to post temp and snow double points or improving News posts directly - Maybe shorter posts ;-) We welcome all news and ideas to help Michigan Disc Golf clubs, events or players achievements, let us know your news or info - help spread the good word.
The first MiCPS Winter point series had 349 players in 15 leagues and last winter had 450 players in 32 leagues and last summer had 831 players in 42 leagues. We are starting our 2nd year in Ohio and Oregon as well. At DGLA we hope to grow as we help grow disc golf leagues and you are a big part of that mission and in achieving success and it all benefits all disc golf players. Thanks!

http://www.discgolfleagueassociation.org/Point_Series/Summary____Rules/summary____rules.html
Points calculation:
The Point Series point calculation tries to encourage players to play often yet and yet not penalize those who cannot play more than once or twice a week. We also try to encourage all league to participate by a three tier approached based on league size for the points accrual – League below 20 players get a boast, league greater than 60 have a points cap.
During a week (Sunday to Saturday) points are calculated for each participating league round you play. The highest TWO point total from any participating league are added into your total and the others are "dropped". Winter Aces are worth 25 points even if that league round is dropped. League round points are basically calculated by adding 2 points for participation and one point for every player you beat and if there is no tie for first place the winner(s) gets 2 additional points for being the "Out Right Winner". Now that basic calculation are further adjusted to encourage small leagues and balance out larger leagues using three levels; 4-19 players, 20-59, and 60+ players. The points awarded are different for each group. The smaller league rounds will get a guaranteed max point total the same as 20 players, the middle size league round are calculated as described above and the larger league rounds have a cap with max points being set to 60 players - Details can be reviewed at www.discgolfleagueassociation.org
Scores must be entered the same as leagues determine payouts; If Divisions are used for payouts than scores must be entered by division. If handicaps are used for payouts then the handicap adjusted scores must be entered. (Disc Golf Scene is looking at offering a automated Handicap system which will bring more leagues into the point series and eventually maybe have point series for the different types of league formats - more when info is available - Thanks! Pete and Disc Golf Scene for all you do for all the disc golf players around the World!!!!!).
Cali - If there is one Cali in a double league they are counted as two players but if there is more than one Cali than they are only counted as one when calculating point totals. This ensures leagues can have special Cali rounds with multiple players playing Cali, but the point totals are accurate based on the number of actual players that played the round.
As always leagues can use their own points system or no point when entering league rounds, as the MiCPS points are calculated independently, allowing league more flexibility to continue with their legacy systems or try new point systems.
Winter Aces: Worth 25 points – League Admin – this is automatically calculated so if you want to use a different point system for your individual league Aces you can.
DGLA will also be awarding some MDGO, Discraft Michigan State Championships berths for the MiCPS-Winter season. More ways to secure your berth and compete in another great Michigan state-wide disc golf event.
Disc Golf Scene has added weekly & monthly awards to your profile based on MiCPS rounds. That’s more Disc Golf Scene Bling for your profile.

There are more leagues than ever so get out to some new courses or new leagues and see what is going on throughout the state. Don't overlook the smaller leagues - they tend to incorporate new ideas faster, have a really friendly group feel and you get introduce to the new courses with the locals who know them best. I also highly recommend making it out to one of the larger leagues as well to experience the energy of all those players coming together at one time, yet in a slightly more casual environment than a tournament. Bottom line, get out and play often!!!! & Enjoy the Rounds.
As a player in the MiCPS you represent the core Michigan Disc Golf players and you can really help make this sport better. Help pass along the Disc Golf etiquette that makes rounds fun and fair for all. Encourage new players and pass along some tips to help them improve and enjoy the sport even more. Bring a friend out and expose them to leagues. If you pack it in, pack it out - or at least make sure it ends up in a trash can. Keeping the courses clean is critical to keeping our courses.
We have naturally beautiful courses let's help keep them that way.
If you have questions or ideas concerning DGLA or the MiCPS please post your comments or send us a message.
