THE GILMAN RANCH STORY
On July 2, 1864, the United States Government deeded the Gilman Creek property to the Northern Pacific Railway Company. The property was sold and resold several times to timber products companies until the Isbell’s purchased it from Plum Creek Timber/Weyerhaeuser in 2016.

Alas, only the stumps remain of the 600–800-year-old Larch, Ponderosa, and Cedar trees from the old growth forest that stood in the Gilman drainage 160 years ago. The Gilman property has many forest habitats and Larch, Engelman Spruce, Western Red Cedar, Grand Fir, Sub-Alpine Fir, Douglas Fir, Lodgepole Pine and Pondarosa Pine can all be found in abundance. The streams and springs are lined with Mountain Maple, Mock Orange, Hawthorne, Red-Osier Dogwood, Service Berry, Black Birch, Cottonwood, and Aspen. Kinnikinnick, Wild Strawberries, Salmonberries, Huckleberries, Thimbleberries, Oregon Grape, and Elderberries keep the deer and bears busy on the forest floor.

The Isbells created a forest stewardship plan and have worked to improve the forest and wildlife habitat while using the property for recreational activities. Regular pre-commercial thinning to improve the forest health, provides resources for fences, walking bridges, benches, and other timber style woodcraft projects.

Please join us in respecting the Gilman Ranch property as stewards of this special place. Always try to leave the property better than when you found it. Remember to be aware of an abundance of wildlife, including bears, mountain lions, wolves and moose. They know who lives here and are willing to remind you of that fact if threatened.

Scouting USA, church youth groups, school groups, and other social groups have been invited to use the property to enjoy the outdoors and hold events. With the addition of the Gilman Gauntlet disc golf course, there is yet another excuse to get outdoors and see the forest through the trees.
