Weather Issues
In an effort to provide the users of our facilities with the safest experience possible, The City of Tallahassee has implemented the use of a Lightning Warning System. This is the standard that now has to be enforced at all City Supervised events and activities. The old lightning detection methods (“when thunder roars, go indoors†or counting the intervals between thunder) are no longer acceptable. Yes, sorry to say, even it is sunny at the park and we receive a WARNING (strikes within 8 miles of park), Play must be stopped until the warning expires or is canceled. In an effort to avoid the “lightning season†it is our intention to move the tournament to April next year. The system has two alerts:
1. Lightning Advisories: There is a potential for cloud to ground lightning with a 15 mile radius in the next 20 minutes. Advisories will include a Start Time and Expiration Time and will be delivered by email and/or text messaging to the TD or Park Supervisor. Play will NOT need to be suspended when an ADVISORY is received.
2. Lightning Warnings: The Lightning detection system has detected cloud to ground lighting that is occurring within an 8 mile radius of the facility. Warnings will include a Start Time and Expiration Time and will be delivered by email and/or text messaging to the TD or Park Supervisor. All supervised activities must be suspended immediately until the warning expires or is cancelled. Play will need to be suspended during a WARNING.
In the event that a “Lightning Warning†alert is sent to the TD or Park Supervisor via phone or email, he or she will immediately stop play and evacuate the event space/playing field/course. All participants, organizers and staff should immediately seek shelter in a safe structure (Buildings or Vehicles ONLY). Pavilions/Outdoor canopies are not considered a SAFE place to shelter. Once the alert has expired the Supervisor will contact the participants/staff/organizers to inform them that the event may resume. less
