-PDGA Digital Scoring will be used for all rounds

-Event is a fundraiser in memory of Dan Berman (Frisbee Dan) in which we will be making a donation to Crohns & Colitis Foundation in his name. https://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/

-Event for AMS will be players pack only (NO PAYOUTS). Pack will be a custom event stamped Streamline Echo along with a $25 Par on Voucher

-Pro digital payouts

-Divisions will need a minimum of THREE(3) Participants to be valid. Any divisions with less than three participants are subject to be combined with another division. Exceptions for any ladies divisions

-No day of sign up or changes to field will be made after June 16, 2023.

The Passing of a Legend.

Harvey Daniel “Frisbee Dan” Berman #2765 was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease while in his early teens. It is a serious chronic medical condition, yet he still excelled as a runner, swimmer, high jumper, skateboarder, and football player.

Frisbee soon became Dan’s primary passion and he rapidly became a formidable Overall flying disc competitor. In 1995, Dan Berman and Debbie Solomon won the senior freestyle Worlds title. Dan had a particular talent for distance, which earned him Masters World Distance titles in 1995 and 1996. Dan was the primary designer for the original layout of the Fore Palms disc golf course in 1995. He bought an ice cream truck and sold golf discs and ice cream out of his truck while parked at the course, where he also gave lessons to the many people who bought discs.

In 2005, Berman, Paul Kenny, and Patrick Maron were helicoptered 30 miles out to sea to meet the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy, where they ran a shipboard mini-tournament for the crew. This satisfied the parameters for Guinness to record and certify his 143.56-meter (471 feet) throw inside the belly of the aircraft carrier as the official Indoor Distance Record, which still stands to this day.

Dan coached numerous young players who went on to perform well in competitions. This included his ‘surrogate’ daughter, Grayson Salsburg, who set distance world records in the four and under division. Hundreds of new and established players received valuable instruction from Dan, usually for free. In the early 2000’s I spent countless hours at Fore Palms while learning as much as I could about this captivating sport. Fortunately, Dan liked to talk and he shared a lot of information about technique,
discs, shot-making, and the mental aspects of competition back in the early 2000’s. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with him about course design.

Many of us consider Dan to be the “Father of Jacksonville Disc Golf” since he had a hand in designing almost every course in NE Florida while living in the area. He was singularly responsible for growing our sport more than everyone else combined from 1995-2015.

It was in 2015 that Dan convinced Robbie Newcomer, the owner of New World Sports Complex, located at the Cecil Field air base, to allow him to design and build a disc golf course on the land adjacent to the Ball golf course. When Gregg Hosfeld consulted with him on the layout, Dan joked, “Course design is where old disc golfers go to stay relevant”. Dan involved several people while designing the Green “OG” course; Gregg and Joe Checorski in particular. Dan and I worked on several holes as well. Once the New World disc golf course had become established, Dan’s relevance was solidified. At the time of his passing, New World had climbed to the No. 2 ranked course in Florida, out of the 143 State courses listed on Disc Golf Course Review.

In November 2016, Dan was diagnosed with Colon Cancer, a known complication of long-standing Crohn’s disease. He passed away in the comfort of his Cabin on the property of his private course, “Out Yonder”. After his passing, I commissioned and paid for 2 headstones in his memory. One was placed on Hole 9, which was his favorite hole on the first course he ever designed in Jacksonville. The other was placed on Hole 17 of the Green Course at New World. It was Dan’s (and my) favorite hole on the last course he ever designed. I had named the hole “Infinity Pool”, which he liked. In late 2016, Dan’s health had deteriorated to the point that he only ever played 1 full round on the newly completed Green course, which he and I played together using a golf cart.
