Great question! As the sport evolves, so do things like invite criteria and registration tiers. For example, over the past years we still were not filling Pro Worlds by invitees and non-invited players were still getting in to fill the event, but this may be the first year where that doesn't happen. We have already ratcheted up the ratings for an invite next year and by the year after we may not need to have the safety valve of an open registration.

No, that's not what I'm saying. I was pointing out that eventually there may not functionally be a need for an open registration period, as it would fill prior to that, but we will have to wait and see. Last year in Utah we didn't fill MPO and 87 MPO players (42% of the field) were rated under a 1000. This year in Emporia we have filled and currently there are 62 MPO players (28% of the field), that are rated below 1000. Whether that percentage is higher or lower next year, will depend on the interest level in the event in Vermont. The last time it was in Vermont it didn't fill, so an even larger percentage of players were under a 1000. When a Worlds doesn't fill, it allows more lower rated players to register.

So then regional pros are still left out. Instead of being able to drive 2 hours to play in Emporia, I would either fly out or drive 20+ hours to Vermont or not play. So either way regional pros lose out because for most of us the only chance we have to play is when it's relatively close to home.
