Why Juniors?
Often we hear the call to "grow the sport", but its not always clear how best this should be done. as part of board discussions around strategic long term planning, youth engagement numbers were identified as an area we as a sport could improve. These engagement numbers can be seen as a vital tool for both the sport of disc golf, and our disc golf clubs, when preparing funding proposals and working with local government organizations on new or expanded courses. Development and investment in our youth and clubs can be seen as a key step toward disc golf becoming a mainstream sport in NZ with access to sustainable and targeted funding not currently available to us as a sport. This in turn will drive development of a high performance program in time. We will literally grow the sport from the grass roots up.
The other strategic outcome of having a thriving youth engagement is the potential to collaborate with schools and educational properties, to develop basic courses in areas where suitable parks and public spaces are unavailable to clubs for development, or unsuitable due to terrain or area, (thinking particularly of the Selwyn District in Canterbury with its smaller featureless parks). This also generally opens up targeted funding not currently available to our clubs.
Bottom line is, Juniors matter.
