888 and 999 are both DNF codes. 888 means that the player left the event without informing the tournament directors or were trying to avoid having a bad round rating affect their official PDGA rating. Some people were known to play 17 holes badly, and then decide not to putt out on hole 18 taking a DNF so that the round would have no rating and not affect them. The PDGA instituted the 888's as a way to penalize a player's rating. It's a player's responsibility to report to the TD's if they cannot continue playing, and that's when we'll give a standard 999 for a DNF.
