Feb 2015 ADGA Meeting Minutes
Start: 7:08 pm
Present: Adam K., Jeremy B., Rick C.
Treasurer -- Andrew DiRoma was approved and accepted as ADGA Treasurer
Russian Jack -- It was agreed upon the cost of $1100 to $1200 was too high for a tournament. Even with donor support to cover the costs, we would not want to set precedence with Anchorage Parks and Rec. that the ADGA could afford this high of a cost.
Tournament Schedule adjusted. Jailhouse was switched to accommodate date change of Tall Grass Open and the addition of Homer Disc Golf Championship per Edan’s request.
New dates—Jailhouse Roc July 18
Homer Disc Golf Championship July 25 & 26
Tall Grass Open Aug 22-23
Course Director – waiting for an update on permitting for the year.
Old Business
Tournaments
Vibram Birdie Bash Apr. 25, registration was accepted by Vibram. After the tournament, $5 of the registration fees will be given back to the TD (Adam K.) which will go to the ADGA.
Ice Bowl – Due to lack of interest and time available, there will be no Ice Bowl this year. This is an indication that the ADGA needs to train more Tournament Directors.
Open floor to members – nothing addressed to the Board.
Meeting Adjourned at 7:18 pm.

Louie is headed to Memorial and Brian has work obligations. Someone want to run Ice Bowl? Has anyone expressed interest in running or assisting a tournament? Waylan and Jordan are the only members I am aware of that have volunteered to assist a tournament this year.

Well then my bad I forgot our conversation regarding that. You could have PM'd me or talked to me in person regarding your interest to refresh my memory. Proactive action is much more productive then keyboard criticism. Sorry to quash your desire to help.

Anyone who has attended recent ADGA meetings would be well aware that we've discussed this several times now and come to the conclusion that it is not in the ADGA's interest to run the Ice Bowl this year. Merchandise doesn't come cheap, and the board felt it was more important to save what funds we do have rather than spend several hundred dollars on merchandise for a benefit tournament. If you would like to be involved in decisions such as this, you are more than welcome to attend monthly meetings. Decisions have to be made in the interest of the club, and seeing how the ADGA spent quite a bit of money this past year it was decided that our money would be better spent on other endeavors.

Your first post is a bit inflammatory Jake. The association has asked for volunteers for several years now. Your post seems to insinuate that "three people" are not allowing others to participate. That's not what I see at all. The "three people" you speak of are those who have actually stepped up to take on the responsibilities of running the organization.

I wish that I had Tuesday nights free to attend. Alas, I do not. The last I had read in meeting mintues there was some discussion about not purchasing a players pack and also a mention of Edan inquiring about different dates. I did not realize that it was off the table until this morning.

I guess that's kind of what I'm getting at Jeremy. There is a lot of miscommunication going on. First it was set for the 15th. Then it was the 15th with no players pack. Then it was maybe not the 15th because of Valentine's day. Then it was it off the table due to lack of interest. And now it is if you wanna run it go get sponsorship. I would be happy to help but I'm not entirely sure what the process is for getting sponsorship. Let's talk dates and process. I understand you have to have meetings with whomever is in attendance but it seems like if only three people are there it might be a good idea to toss out a survey monkey or something and get input from others that may not be able to make it rather than have a few folks make all the decisions.

I had asked in person, but that's neither here nor there. I think there need to be better priorities. Like the club wouldn't be broke if they went after the thousands of dollars that haven't been repaid from STATES last year... Hell yall just got the leftover discs like 2 weeks ago. If it's not what the three people that run the show want then it's not gonna get done whether it's in the ADGAs interest or not. I'm not gonna quit supporting via tourneys and leagues but my interest in helping has been turned off. But seein the number of tournaments in anchorage vs the number in homer doesn't look like I'll be able to do many tourneys this year

I agree with you Brian, I think that "lack of interest" might not have been the best choice of words. I think what Adam meant was that it seemed that the board (and members in attendance at previous meetings) felt that spending club funds on the Ice Bowl merchandise wasn't IN our best interest. We'd all love to see the Ice Bowl happen, but we should also be looking out for the financial health of our association. Sometimes that means making decisions that might not make everyone happy. At this point (and I did express this opinion at the most recent meeting) I am still open to having the Ice Bowl if that's what a majority of the club membership would like to see.

I would also like to say that I'm all ears as to what members feel the association's priorities should be. Some of the goals that we have identified include establishing 501c3 status for the ADGA as well as continuing to develop new courses and opportunities for people to play. In order to reach these goals we need to improve the way we operate as an organization first, which you might say is my highest priority as a board member.

just to add a little insight to the discussion. I think you 3 guys & toni are doing the best you can, it's a shame that more of us that love alaska disc golf can't make those meetings. tue night is Fire Dept training for me so it's not an option. Having the Homer guys so far away creates another problem. I wish i was more involved, but at the moment the timing is just not right. Jake i think you should voice your opinions at the monthly meetings not online, I would like to see you run the Ice Bowl, i would assist in raising funds or be assistent TD, maybe cassidy would be willing to help make that happen? just a thought

I registered an ice bowl last year for this time this year and backed off of it as I was assured it was "Brians" event and I did not want to step on toes. There was and is always a large number turnout for any icebowl I've ever been to. they are very easy to run and I am registering a 2016 ice bowl.

I hear lots of talk about volunteers but it is obvious the club doesn't want "volunteers to help with events as I and others have repeatedly said we would help in any way we can. just to be ridiculed and laughed at. case in point, louie asked for a volunteer to cover him this week on Wednesday, I waited to see if anyone would volunteer......nobody raised their hand. so I did. louie expressed that he would love to have Jeremy do it, Jeremy did not want to. Joe expressed that someone who can make it "guaranteed" do it implying that I was not a dependable choice. I live a few blocks from Westchester so that's not an issue. Don't blame things on a lack of volunteers, blame it on the "controlling nature of the club as a whole. There are plenty of people in this club to make lots more stuff happen if there weren't so many control issues.

I tried to organize an icebowl when I realized brian changed his mind, but it was too late. all of the players packs are gone. I would if people were willing throw a similar event without ice bowl loot but still focused on providing food stuffs to a worthy food driven charitable entity. Say 5 cans to play, 10 cans gets you a lightweight putter you can use to promote the game to a kid you know and 20 cans gets you a lightweight putter and an evolution plastic disc of your choice from molds I will provide to pick from. Just an idea.....I have the time the plastic and the initiative.
