I tried once with United, it was like $125 each way circa 2018. Since then, it was easier to (pre-arrange with hotel staff) to package it up and pre-ship it to the hotel I was going to stay at ahead of arrival via Mail-it-all (UPS etc). The catch is, keep enough time on the backend to make it to a staples to ship it back home. Much easier than lugging it into/out of airport. Just remember to pack scissors and packing tape and have a ready to go shipping label for the return shipment. Not a bad way to go, just takes a little forethought
When I flew to USWDGC last year I took my Rovic as checked equipment on Delta and had no issues. A friend booked our tickets and she gets two free checked bags per person so I'm not sure about cost.
I have taken the wheels off my All-Terrain and fit it in a suitcase. It works just fine. You can keep it loaded with discs or pack other things in it. All said and done mine didn't weigh over 50lbs.

I have successfully taken a the wheels off and put an All Terrain into a checked bag. Worked great!
