Week 10 and Overall League Recap

We had tight scoring with some slick and skippy greens for Week 10. Travis took A Pool with a -9 in a field of 7, Derek matched -9 to take B Pool in a field of 7, and Josh won the C Pool duel at +1.

We had a handful of players in A Pool chasing down Travis's -9. Will finished at -8, Sramdaddy at -7, and the Goon Man at -6 (just outside of the cash line).

The cash line for B Pool bested A Pool on aggregate this week. Derek's bogey-free -9 was followed by Naz and Chungdaddy who both shot -8 and also went bogey free to cash.

Josh and Jeremy had a fairly close battle with Josh edging Jeremy by 4.

Stats wise, hole 5 played the easiest on the day, averaging -0.44 throws from par. Three holes played over par: 14 (+0.31 throws from par), 3 (+0.19), and 10 (+0.13).

Props to Travis for getting the lone birdie on hole 10; to Derek and Sramdaddy for the lone birds on 3; and Chad, The Goon Man, and Allen for the lone birds on 14.

Let's talk overall league stats:

We had a total of 92 unique players come out to league for 165 sanctioned rounds.

Our league champion was determined based on top 7 rounds by points. In first we had the Goon Man Dan at 282.5 points; in second, Sramdaddy notched 257.5 points; and in third, B Pool Muncher Munoz totaled 250 points. Honorable mentions go out to Scott and Morgan for placing 4th and 5th overall respectively. Our league podium finishers will recieve custom minis to flex on future opponents. We'll be tracking you down to give you the goods once they're ready!

Also noteworthy, we had two players make it to all 10 weeks of league! Mega props to Naz and the Goon Man Dan for your perseverance despite limited daylight and sketchy footing! I'll be tracking these boys down to give them teeny trinkets later this month.

All the water pooled on the pads and froze! I just dumped 40 pounds of melt on them30 minutes ago. It’s working thru the ice quick and I can already get to the cement on one. If anyone can come tonight early and help scrape them off I’d appreciate the assistance. I’ll be back at 5 pm to let the melt work a little more. If we don’t clean them off today, they’ll all refreeze and the effort will be wasted. Thanks

Week 9 Recap

Only the most hearty of disc heads showed up for league last Saturday. Temperatures were in the single to low double digits and the winds were swirling, cutting though our outer layers like a Ballista through butter.

It was our first week all league in which a -12 or -11 wasn't needed to take down A Pool. The Goon Man Dan was only mildly perturbed by the cold and shot an A-Pool winning -8 in a field of 6. Naz and Samm split the 6-player B Pool at -6. In C Pool, Josh won the the duel with a +5.

In A Pool, the Goon Man Dan shot a bogey free -8 and was followed up by his fellow league director (me) at -7 and Leader Board Leeds at -6 to round out the cash line.

In B Pool, Naz and Samm diced up -6s. Naz did it with 8 birds and 2 bogeys, while Samm had 7 birds and 1 bogey. Weslee rounded out the B Pool cash line with an up and down round that included 5 birds and three bogyes to finish at -2.

In C Pool, Josh carded two birds and a handful of bogeys to finish +5 over Jeremy's birdie free +8. The chains were cold out there!

Lots of folks earned shoutouts this week due to league-wide lack of birdies. Here are the notable ones:
Samm had the lone bird on hole 3
Morgan had the lone bird on hole 9
Jake had the lone bird on hole 10 (1 long) - the hardest hole on the day
Frank had the lone bird on hole 12 (3 left)

The ratings for this week were almost 2 strokes higher than in prior weeks. This week Dan's -8 was 971 rated whereas two weeks ago -8s were rated a measly 944 (a 27 point differential).

With his Week 9 victory, Dan has all but cemented his overall league W unless someone goes crazy during the finale at week 10 (Jan 11). If you want a shot at upping your rating ahead of the Jan 14th ratings update - week 10 is your last chance to do it!

Dan found his groove again after a subpar (for him) -11 last week. He went on a bogey-free tear shooting -12 to win by 3. His -12 this week was rated 7 points higher (or a half stroke) than the ones last week. Did the course play a bit tougher this week? Or, were folks feeling the ill effects of an overly indulgent holiday week? Your guess is as good as mine. Chasing down The Goon Man were Scott, Will, and Frank who each shot very respectable -9s to split the 2nd place A pool pot.

In B Pool, Munoz and Meier split the pot with bogey free -7s, beating their closest B Pool competitors by a whopping 5 strokes.

In C Pool, Josh was a menace shooting a bogey free -6. Through his two league rounds this season, he's averaging a rating of 895 so it seems he may not be long for the C pool life.

Props for longest birdie streaks this week go to Will, Frank, and Morgan who each managed to do five in a row on the same holes - 14 through 18. Big props as well to Josh (in C Pool!) who had the lone birdie on hole 4. More props to Dan Allen for carding the only birdie on hole 3, and Wesley for doing the same on hole 10 (1 long) with a monster forehand park job.

Overall league standings:
Dan has extended his lead with another stellar performance allowing him to drop a middling 22.5 point performance from week 6 and replace it with this week's 40 pointer. Sramdaddy, his closest competitor, laid an egg this week with his 15 pointer but he still has a shot at edging Dan if he can pull out two great performances in the remaining two weeks. Scott also has a chance at the league title if he can card two more stellar rounds. All that being said, it's the the Goon Man Dan's to lose.

Week 7 Recap

Conditions were swell but our turnout was meh ahead of the holidays. In A Pool, Murph dog and I were able to split the W in 7-player pool shooting -12; in B Pool, Naz continued his winning ways shooting -8 in a 5 player pool; and in C Pool Jeremy stood alone against the elements and solo'd his way to the W with a +5.

I can only assume that bogey was his way of showing off his Christmas spirit by lifting up his fellow man and awarding one of his biggest fans (me) part of his winnings. Dan "the Goon" Allen had a typically strong showing but got rattled enough by a spit out on hole 16 to miss a 15-footer on hole 17 and give Murph and I the W.

In B Pool, Naz carded 9 birds and one bogey to take the W over the field by 2 strokes. Derek had a strong showing shooting a bogey-free -6 to round out the B pool cash line.

In C Pool, Jeremy had an up and down round with 2 birdies and few bogeys to finish +5. Sadly, he was alone in C Pool :'(

Stats wise, Holes 2, 11 (2 left), and 17 (8 right/short) played the easiest on the day, each averaging -0.62 throws from par. Hole 10 (1 long) was the hardest on the day, averaging +0.23 throws from par. It was bogeyed or double bogeyed by 31% of players. Hole 4 also played tough, averaging +0.08 throws from par.

Shoutout to Dan Allen for being the only player to birdie both of the hardest holes (4 and 10). He did it by cashing C2 putts on each. Shoutout as well to Murph for stream-parking hole 4 and sinking the putt from his casual relief.

We're 7 rounds into this league, giving us a sense of who has a chance to be the overall league champ. As a reminder, each player's top 7 rounds by points are included in the overall league-long points tabulation. Here are where things stand:

Teepad help

If anyone is going out to the course Thursday or Friday, it would be great if you could sweep off the pads. They were shoveled Monday, but sweeping them off would help out a lot. Otherwise, bring your cleats on Saturday.

Week 6 Recap - No Week 7 - Play With Old School Discs Instead!

We had 15 competitors this week and the big winners were Killian Flannery in A Pool; Naz Munoz in B Pool; and David Donaldson in C Pool. Congrats to the champs!

In A Pool, Killian shot a bogey free -11 to hold off Travis and Sramek who both finished at -10. Mr. Groves also shot a very respectable -9 to round out the cash line.

Ratings were about 1 stroke lower than usual, suggesting folks are getting dialed in at the Goon. This week -10 was rated 965, compared to 984 in Week 3. Don't worry though - all of the ratings will get pooled at the end, meaning all those -10s across the season will come out with the same official ratings for the February update.

Notable achievements this week:
- Morgan carded the lone birdie on hole 3 this week (the 2nd hardest hole on the day)
- Sramek and Killian got the only birds on hole 4 (the 3rd hardest hole on the day)

Hole 10 wasn't birdied, but 40% of the field did manage to take something other than a par... It averaged +0.4 throws from par on the day. Holes 11 and 18 had the most birds on the day (10 each) to finish -0.67 throws from par.

Week 5 Recap - Return of "The Goon"

It was a chilly one (about 5 °F) and only 10 souls were brave/stubborn enough to make it out to League last Saturday. This was the first week this season in which we didn't field a C Pool.

Dan "The Goon" Allen played like he always does and won A Pool handily. In B Pool, Mike B broke Naz's cash streak and took home the lone prize in a 2-man field.

In B Pool, Mike B played some classic Mike B golf, laying down a ton of birds (9 to be exact) but also throwing in some bogeys and one double bogey to finish at -4. I wasn't there, but I'm guessing my man airballed a couple 15 footers which then zipped by the basket at roughly 80 mph and left him with tough C2 comebackers. Just a guess, but if you know, you know. Naz's cash streak came to an end , falling 1 short of Mike B to finish at -3. It was a good run, Naz! You'll always have the memories.

Stats wise, the course played about average. Hole 18 (9 short) was birdied by 8/10 players, tying it with hole 15 (6 short) which has consistently been the easiest hole all year. I infer this means our cold weather discers also happen to be forehand specialists. Holes 14 (5 right) and 4 were the toughest on the day, finishing +0.1 throws from par. In terms of scoring separation, it looks like holes 3, 9, 13, and 14 are among the best at delivering both birds and bogeys so far this season.

Ratings were about 2 points below their average this week, perhaps due to the cold, perhaps due to randomness and the small sample size. Generally this league season, -12 has scored around 1005;-9 around 965; -7 around 940; -4 around 895; E around 840 or so.

Week 4/Frozen Turkey Tourney Recap

We had a great turnout of 31 folks at the annual Frozen Turkey Tourney which doubled as league week 4. Big thanks to all who came out and supported the cause!

Behind Purpero in A Pool was a big ol' smattering of folks trailing by 3 and 4 strokes. Eight of the 14-player pool finished at -9 (Sramdaddy, Dan "the Goon" Allen, and Scott) or -8 (Will, Seth, Conor, and Pistol Pete) . Five of them did it by staying bogey free and 3 of them threw in a bogey for good measure.

Behind Chad in B Pool, Naz remained a force to be reckoned with, keeping his streak of placing 1st or 2nd alive despite the increased field size. Behind Naz, three players finished at -4 (Mike B, Cody, and Brock). A note on Chad's round - he started on 4 and went bogey-bogey before turning his round around. Way to go, Prez!

In C Pool, Mary was able to fend off Donald by one stroke. She did it by playing consistent golf - carding one lone bird but otherwise limiting her errors. Donald carded 2 birds but also threw two more bogeys than Mary.

Notable scores and course stats:
Shoutout to Seth Asing for carding the lone birdie on hole 3 this week. Kudos as well to Brock Langley and Isaiah Gall who were the only folks to birdie hole 10 (1 long). Those were the hardest holes on the day, with hole 3 averaging +0.48 throws from par and hole 10 averaging +0.32 throws from par. Also noteworthy - there were zero birdies on hole 4.

Hole 15 (6 short/elevated) remained the easiest hole on the day, averaging -0.58 throws from par. Holes 1, 7, and 18 were the runner-up easiest holes, averaging <-0.4 throws from par.

Week 3 Recap - Week 4 is the Frozen Turkey Tourney

We had our best showing of the season last Saturday with 19 total competitors. Will Graham took 1st in a 9-player A Pool, Bee Yang took 1st in a 8-player B Pool, and Sal DelReal won in a 2-player C Pool duel.

Notably - our ace pot shrunk a whole heck of a lot and Mike B knows where they money went. He aced hole 17 (8 short), taking home a $246 ace pot. Congrats Mike! This is the first league ace since Allen Black's ace on hole 17 at PC on June 11th. Prior 2024 league aces were recorded o ... more

Will took A Pool by shooting -11 with zero bogeys. David Sramek was one stroke behind and also stayed bogey free. Dan Allen and Cyle Ziegler rounded out the cash line shooting -9 and -8 respectively. Our dear homie Scott tragically went bogey-bogey-bogey to finish his round and drop from having a 1 stroke lead on the field to missing the cash line. As we say in my homeland of Minnesota - oofdah!

The B Pool battle turned into a heater with the Bee man himself critically notching a 1 stroke lead over 4 players to take solo 1st. In a tie for 2nd and rounding out the B-pool cash line were Mike B, Derek, and Naz.

The C Pool battle between Sal and Jeremy was won by Sal who finished at -2. Sal also beat 2 B Pool players and 1 A Pool player (me). Way to go Sal! His 875-rated round was a whopping 105 points above his rating. B Pool better watch out! Sal be coming.

Stats wise, Holes 7 and 2 played the most under par at -0.58 and -0.53 throws from par. Hole 15 still had a lot of birdies (12) with the new raised basket, but it also had 3 bogeys. As usual, hole 10 played tough with zero birdies, averaging +0.32 throws from par. Hole 4 was bogeyed by 42% of players, averaging +0.37 throws from par.

Other fun facts:
-Naz is the only player who has cashed in all three weeks of league with two 1st place, and one 2nd place finish. Go Naz! Unfortunately, no matter how well he plays this Saturday, his streak will end as this Saturday...

-There will be NO PAYOUTS this Saturday as the league round will be doubling as the annual Frozen Turkey Tourney for charity. Entry can be paid with either a frozen turkey, frozen ham, or a $20 bill. Week 2 Recap

A and B Pools had another solid showing in Week 2 with Scott taking the win in a 6-person A-Pool and Naz repeating as B-Pool champ in a field of 8.

In A Pool Scott stayed bogey free and was a birdie fiend shooting -12. Anthony and Morgan tied for 2nd at -7, leaving week 1 champ Dan out of the cash. Both Anthony and Morgan also managed to stay bogey free.

In C Pool, Randolph annihilated all of his competitors with a +3 including 4 birdies.

Stats wise, scores were slightly colder than in Week 1 with ratings being about +6 points higher in Week 2.

Hole 15 (6 short) once again caught the most birdies this week, with 80% of competitors carding the bird (though one person also carded a double bogey - oof). Hole 1 also scored low, averaging -0.67 throws from par.

Hole 10 (1 long) was the only hole with zero birdies on the day. Hole 4 was only birdied once on the day - shoutout to Killian! Hole 9 was only birdied by two players - less enthusiastic shoutouts to Scott and Chung.

We'll be back at the Goon on Saturday. Hope to see ya out there! The basket on Hole 15 (6 short) has been raised to give us some practice on running risky putts in the offseason. Week 1 Recap

Scores were pretty hot in Week 1! Dan Allen, the local Goon himself set the season bar at -12, taking home 1st prize from a 9-player A Pool pot. Dan's -12 is unofficially 1005 rated. Congrats Dan and way to set a high bar in Week 1!

In B Pool, Mike B and Naz battled it out and finished tied at -9 to split the pot 5-player pot. Mike did it while also carding two bogeys while Naz played bogey free.

We had a great A pool showing with 9 competitors. I ended up taking 2nd (-9), David took 3rd (-7), and Anthony and Frank Tied for 4th (-6).
In typical Goon fashion, each stroke was unofficially worth 14 rating points. It's birdie or die out there folks.

In terms of hole statistics, hole 15 (6 short) was the easiest on the day, playing -0.8 strokes from par, with 12 birdies and 3 pars. Hole 16 (7 right) wasn't far behind at -0.6 from par. Holes 3 and 4 were the only ones to play above par on the day, both tallying a single birdie and 5 bogeys to average +0.27 from par.

We'll be back at the Goon next week! I'll be away at NADGT Nationals in Austin, TX along with Allen, David, and Frank. If you have questions on the day of, look for Dan out on the course.

Week 1 - 11am Saturday at the Goon

We'll be at the Goon for Week 1. The course is much improved this year with two baskets on each hole. Thanks to Dan Allen, Chad Rutledge, and everyone else who contributed to the effort of getting the new baskets installed ahead of/during the snow storm.

A note on the Goon layout for the season:
Yellow baskets (including the one the gazebo at hole 1) will be played as the front 9. Hole 10 is the longer, rightmost yellow basket. Holes 11 through 18 play to the red/silver baskets.

Get your handwarmers ready, sanctioned Saturday league is coming! The posted course schedule is tentative depending on snowfall. We'll play Kincaid/PC as much as we can before the snow flies.

The league champion crown (and associated engraved mini) will be awarded differently from leagues past. League points from competitors' top 7 rounds will be tabulated and tracked throughout the season. Points are awarded based on the number of folks a person beats in a given round (2.5 points/competitor beat).
