16 week Ohio State Wide Disc Golf League Point Series
Sunday April 12th 2014 - Saturday Aug 1st 2014
May 10th 2015 Sunday - Deadline for adding new leagues to the Point Series.
** Leagues can always run outside the OhCPS dates but OhCPS points will only accumulate for rounds played between these dates.
During a week (Sunday to Saturday) points are calculated for each participating league round you play. The highest TWO point total from a participating league are added into your total and the others are "dropped". Summer Aces are worth 25 points even if that league round is dropped. League round points are basically calculated by adding 2 points for participation and one point for every player you beat and if there is no tie for first place the winner gets 2 additional points for being the "Out Right Winner". Now that basic calculation are further adjusted to encourage small leagues and balance out larger leagues using three levels; 4-19 players, 20-59, and 60+ players. The points awarded are different for each group. The smaller league rounds will get a guaranteed max point total the same as 20 players, the middle size league round are calculated as described above and the larger league rounds have a cap with max points being set to 60 players.
Scores must be entered the same as leagues determine payouts; If Divisions are used for payouts than scores must be entered by division. If handicaps are used for payouts then the handicap adjusted scores must be entered.
Highlighted Leagues of the Week (HLW) - We will again have Double Points rounds for each league who desires to have a HLW. We realize some leagues do no like to have a bunch of visiting players so you don't have to have a HLW but for those who like increase their payouts, increase the challenge, increase the comrade and boast the fun and Double the points - please send your desired HLW date and we will highlight your league events before that round and that round will be worth double points to all who play. HLW can be any time after May 10th.

One Week Left in the OhCPS-W
It's a great time to look back at the different Winter seasons to see how things are progressing and so at a high level I looked at the number of players and number of leagues participating as we wrap up our 2nd OhCPS - Winter season.

One Week Left in the OhCPS-W
It's a great time to look back at the different Winter seasons to see how things are progressing and so at a high level I looked at the number of players and number of leagues participating as we wrap up our 2nd OhCPS - Winter season.
Note when we started we grab all posted Ohio leagues and add them to the point Series to help ensure they were aware of the OhCPS and to try and reach one of our goals to bring all the Ohio leagues together so all players could see all the different leagues and players through the state. Some leagues had expressed they did not want this so we posted that the Point Series is now an Opt In event and unfortunately this has caused some leagues to not make it in, even some that wanted to but were late in opting in but it has been a great season and we look forward to more growth and fun in the future.
2014 45 total players 7 participating leagues
2015 46 total players 6 participating leagues Not done yet ;-)
So even with one less league we still have more Ohio players playing through this crazy winter season.
OK we have a one week from this Saturday until the Winter season is over and we can get out the Shorts and t-shirts and enjoy warmer weather rounds - I'm optimistic ;-) Forget that Rodent movie star....
********************************
Last day of the season for Rounds: Feb 28th
Cut-off for league rounds posting and updates: March 7th
********************************
Yes after the the last rounds on Saturday Feb 28th leagues will have one week to wrap up their round postings and any updates. We will then review the posted comments to try and determine the Coldest Round and Deepest Snow Round for Triple Points and then the Leaderboard will be locked.
I'd also like to give a big THANKS to Larry Bright Jr. for getting involved and helping to move the OhCPS forward. Larry is helping to manage the Double Points rounds, spread the word, collect feedback and ideas to help improve your OhCPS.
This is also a great time to get feedback on the Winter season:
1) Was the 14 week season just right? Should is start earlier, end later, shorter or longer?
(Nov 23rd to Feb 28th )
2) Any other feedback or suggestions are welcomed - help improve your OhCPS
For the OhCPS-Summer 2015 - It was suggested last year to start later to give more time for all the leagues to start their summer season and not join late behind in points.
Last year we did April 6th - July 26th 14 weeks.
This year we are looking at making the season a bit longer but start just a little later:
April 12th - Aug 1st - a 16 week season
With a little over a week left here is how the top 20 - well with 4 tied for 20th place it's a few more than the top 20, of the overall leaderboard is looking.

So we all know that the Point Series just keeps your best two rounds per week(Sunday - Saturday) to try and balance those who can play often with those who are not so fortunate. This does have an impact on the points and where players end up on the leaderboard. One way to try and get insight to who are the other top players but who just can't seem to get out to maximize their round count and there by potentially maximizing/increasing their point total, is to look at Average Points per Round.
Bill Perry is a good example he has only 1 recorded round so far and earned 16 points. Even I can figure out his Average is 16 pts per round. Now that is pretty good. Actually it is enough to put him at the 20th spot overall for Average points per Round. Three out of the top 20 on the overall leaderboard actually have lower pts/round averages.
Here are the Top 20 players in order of Pts/Rnd average. Nice play guys

======================================
The Average Pts./Rnd for the top 20 is 19.361 points in an average of 6.1 rounds each.
The Average Pts./Rnd for the top 10 is 17.945 points in an average of 8.9 rounds each.
Looking at some stats and trends I see that at 10th place Bill "The Ninja" Savage, 5 rounds recorded
101 total points (10th overall). Now Bill has 3 1st place finishes at Osborne 2014-15 Iceberg Sundays, to help maximize his point total with only 5 rounds. Now tim toth only has 2 1st place wins but an extra round for a total rounds of 6 and he edges up to 9th place. Michael "Sean" Barnes, melissa martin, Mickey Anderson, Kevin Daney all have 7 round each and without any Aces or Double Points it simply comes down to standing in each round with Kevin Daney and his 4 1st place finishes at Punderson Winter Handicap League 2014 that rocketed him up to the 5th place overall. Andy Morrison & Bob Becker both with 13 rounds and 208 points are tied for 3rd place overall. Larry Bright Jr. does not quite have the same number of rounds with only 11 recorded but manages to utilize 4 wins, 3 at 2014-15 Sims Winter Saturday Scrambles and 1 at Osborne 2014-15 Iceberg Sundays and only 2 of the remaining 7 are not in the top 3 places. Great Consistent Play once again Larry. Now those wins helped Larry Bright Jr. reach a Pts./Rnd average of 19.9091 which is even higher than #1 eric " Sharky " boyd but with 2 more rounds counted eric " Sharky " boyd with a 18.1538 Pts./Rnd Avg, amassing 236 points is at the top of the Ohio Cooperative point Series Overall Leaderboard. The gaps are small. There are 7 weeks remaining. Let's see who is at the top at the end of the season.

The Disc Golf League Association (DGLA) is proud to bring you the 2nd annual, Ohio Cooperative Point Series – Winter, (OhCPS-W) 2015 season.
14 week State Wide Disc Golf League Point Series
Sunday Nov 23rd 2014 - Saturday Feb 28th 2015
FREE to all league players who play participating leagues and free to the leagues/clubs as well.
********** IMPORTANT *****************
* January 15th - deadline for adding new leagues to the OhCPS-W Point series.
******************************************
This year clubs/leagues must Opt-In to the OhCPS. Meaning any player or league admin of a league who wants to get OhCPS-W points for their regular league rounds needs to ensure that they post on the OhCPS-W Comments page or send a message to one of the league admin. Please include the link to the league page, it is really helpful to reduce effort and mistakes - Thanks
Also this year leagues can join and decide if they want to have a Highlighted League of the Week (HLW) or not. Some feedback that not all clubs/league are set-up to accommodate extra players or non-regular players. We understand. Now to help reach our mission to encourage more play and to help spread the good ideas, the HLW was designed to provide extra visibility of what each league does so that the ideas can be looked at to see what if anything others can try to enhance the experience of their players. Players also get extra points - Double Points! in the past as well as we try to acknowledge those players who try to attend as many HLW as possible and also look at how that affects their points and performance. But we also promote different formats and types of leagues and so we try to accommodate adding more without adding addition work to the league admin or negatively impact them in any way.
In the past many players of the Winter Point Series have enjoyed a temperature incentive, Double Points for rounds played where the (Feels Like - with Wind chill) Temperature is below 15 degrees F. If your willing to challenge the Polar Vortex you deserve some reward.
Another suggestion recently was to add a Snow Incentive - If during your round you play in 2" or more, or 2" accumulates by the end of the round, Double Points.
Do you and your friends exchange stories about who played in the deepest snow or coldest temps? We will help determine that for the state. When you post provide the average fairway snow depth and the actual coldest temp you encountered during the round, when they are extreme and at the end of the season we will go back and update the schedule for the deepest snow and coldest temp and that will get TRIPLE points.
If either occur post in the comments section (league name, date & temp or snow depth) and by the end of the week we will update the schedule to show the Double Points - maybe Triple points for the luck few who survive the coldest & deepest wrath of the 2015 Polar Vortex..... Anyone who played in that round can make the post. The double points will be updated right before the weekly and monthly stats lock for the leaderboard. If someone posts late we will still update and the players will get the double points toward their overall point total but the weekly and monthly leaderboards lock 2 days after the week or month. Weeks run from Sunday to Saturday for weekly leaderboards and Best Two rounds of the week.
I'm excited to welcome a local Ohio player to the OhCPS Staff who was very successful in the previous OhCPS and who was very active in providing feedback and ideas to help grow and improve the OhCPS and ensure it has an Ohio focus. Welcome Larry Bright Jr. who will be playing rounds in Ohio and you can discuss the OhCPS with him, ask questions, provide suggestions or news that should be passed along to all Ohio players. You can always do the same directly with me or the other DGLA staff but many times it easier to chat in person during a round or at a event. We welcome all news and ideas to help Ohio Disc Golf clubs, events or players achievements - help spread the good word.
If there are others who would like to get involved please contact one of the OhCPS staff, there are many ways to help.
The first OhCPS Winter point series had 45 players and 7 leagues and each player has friends who see the info on Disc Golf Scene as well. The summer season had 138 players from 12 leagues. Our largest State-wide point series is currently Michigan which first winter PS had 349 players in 15 leagues and last winter had 450 players in 32 leagues and last summer had 831 players in 42 leagues. At DGLA we hope to grow as we help grow disc golf leagues and you are a big part of that mission and achieving success and that benefits all disc golf players.

Based on player's and league coordinator's ideas and comments and the continued devotion of the DGLA and DGS staff the rules for the DGLA Ohio Statewide Point Series are available here.

Points calculation:
The Point Series point calculation tries to encourage players to play often yet and yet not penalize those who cannot play more than once or twice a week. We also try to encourage all league to participate by a three tier approached based on league size for the points accrual – League below 20 players get a boast, league greater than 60 have a points cap.
During a week (Sunday to Saturday) points are calculated for each participating league round you play. The highest TWO point total from any participating league are added into your total and the others are "dropped". Winter Aces are worth 25 points even if that league round is dropped. League round points are basically calculated by adding 2 points for participation and one point for every player you beat and if there is no tie for first place the winner(s) gets 2 additional points for being the "Out Right Winner". Now that basic calculation are further adjusted to encourage small leagues and balance out larger leagues using three levels; 4-19 players, 20-59, and 60+ players. The points awarded are different for each group. The smaller league rounds will get a guaranteed max point total the same as 20 players, the middle size league round are calculated as described above and the larger league rounds have a cap with max points being set to 60 players - Details can be reviewed at www.discgolfleagueassociation.org
Scores must be entered the same as leagues determine payouts; If Divisions are used for payouts than scores must be entered by division. If handicaps are used for payouts then the handicap adjusted scores must be entered. (Disc Golf Scene is looking at offering a automated Handicap system which will bring more leagues into the point series and eventually maybe have point series for the different types of league formats - more when info is available - Thanks! Pete and Disc Golf Scene for all you do for all the disc golf players around the World!!!!!).
Cali - If there is one Cali in a double league they are counted as two players but if there is more than one Cali than they are only counted as one when calculating point totals. This ensures leagues can have special Cali rounds with multiple players playing Cali, but the point totals are accurate based on the number of actual players that played the round.
As always leagues can use their own points system or no point when entering league rounds, as the OhCPS points are calculated independently, allowing league more flexibility to continue with their legacy systems or try new point systems.
OhCPS automatically keeps your best TWO rounds per week (Sunday - Saturday) when calculating your OhCPS total points. This is automatically recalculated whenever new scores/rounds are posted or scores are updated. Get out and play as much as you can to increase your skill and maximize your points but if you are limited to how often you can play your goal would be to try and get at least two rounds per week.
Winter Aces: Worth 25 points – League Admin – this is automatically calculated so if you want to use a different point system for your individual league Aces you can.
DGLA will also be awarding some MDGO, Discraft Ohio State Championships berths for the OhCPS-Winter season. More ways to secure your berth and compete in another great Ohio state-wide disc golf event.
Disc Golf Scene has added weekly & monthly awards to your profile based on OhCPS rounds. That’s more Disc Golf Scene Bling for your profile.
********************************
There are more leagues than ever so get out to some new courses or new leagues and see what is going on throughout the state. Don't overlook the smaller leagues - they tend to incorporate new ideas faster, have a really friendly group feel and you get introduce to the new courses with the locals who know them best. I also highly recommend making it out to one of the larger leagues as well to experience the energy of all those players coming together at one time, yet in a slightly more casual environment than a tournament. Bottom line, get out and play often!!!! & Enjoy the Rounds.
As a player in the OhCPS you represent the core Ohio Disc Golf players and you can really help make this sport better. Help pass along the Disc Golf etiquette that makes rounds fun and fair for all. Encourage new players and pass along some tips to help them improve and enjoy the sport even more. Bring a friend out and expose them to leagues. If you pack it in, pack it out - or at least make sure it ends up in a trash can. Keeping the courses clean is critical to keeping our courses.
We have naturally beautiful courses let's help keep them that way.
If you have questions or ideas concerning DGLA or the OhCPS please post your comments or send us a message.
Thanks and enjoy the Rounds. May the Course be with you.

28 possible Counted Rounds
Sunday Nov 23rd 2014 - Saturday Feb 28th 2015
6 leagues
46 Total # of Players
226 Total Rounds Played
3,883 Total Points awarded
I always like to look at how many rounds players actually played and what it takes to make it into the top spots. This kind of cuts to the chase of what the biggest factor was to making it to the top as the top ten by rounds is the top ten players overall. In seasons when players play more that two leagues a week then it really starts to shake things up but in the top 10 one one had a week where there was a dropped round so currently the key is to play more rounds than anyone else and do hope you do better than anyone else who plays the same number of rounds.
Kudos to the top four players who managed to get in 18 or more rounds of the max 28 rounds during the 14 week season. Your on the right path and hey your in the top 4.
Leaderboard Position Player Points Total Rounds
2 Bob Becker 343 21
3 Andy Morrison 341 20
1 Larry Bright Jr. 361 18
4 eric " Sharky " boyd 321 18
5 Mickey Anderson 201 12
7 David Tilson 199 12
6 melissa martin 200 11
10 Ryan Lynch 154 11
8 Bill "The Ninja" Savage 187 10
9 Kevin Daney 183 9
11 Michael "Sean" Barnes 151 9
12 tim toth 126 7
13 Dan Nelson 107 6
I was also very excitted to see a woman in the top ten.
melissa martin with 11 rounds and two win in handicapped leagues. Way to go melissa.
Feb 14 W.U.S.S. Round & Feb 21 Punderson Winter Handicap League 2014 at Punderson State Park
Now another great metric to look at is the points per round average to try and identify the sleepers who if they could just get a few more rounds in at their current pt/round Avg they would be up near the top - but you just never know unless they actually play the rounds.....
so in the top ten the average points per round average is between 14 & 20.05555556
pts per round. If I order the players who have at least 3 rounds by their point per round average here are the top players and several could have been in the top ten if they had just a few more rounds in this season....
Top Players by Pts/Round Average with 3 or more rounds.
Current position, Player, Pts, # of Rounds, PTs/Round Average
9 Kevin Daney 183 9 20.33333333
14 Bill Perry 101 5 20.2
1 Larry Bright Jr. 361 18 20.05555556
15 Tim kaihlanen 80 4 20
8 Bill "The Ninja" Savage 187 10 18.7
6 melissa martin 200 11 18.18181818
12 tim toth 126 7 18
4 eric " Sharky " boyd 321 18 17.83333333
13 Dan Nelson 107 6 17.83333333
3 Andy Morrison 341 20 17.05
17 Joe Michelini 68 4 17
11 Michael "Sean" Barnes 151 9 16.77777778
5 Mickey Anderson 201 12 16.75
18 Ryan Kolbus 50 3 16.66666667
7 David Tilson 199 12 16.58333333
2 Bob Becker 343 21 16.33333333
19 Greg Platt 48 3 16
20 Frank Lyons 46 3 15.33333333
20 PK Deaner 46 3 15.33333333
20 eric centanni 46 3 15.33333333
20 Robert Hanratty 46 3 15.33333333
10 Ryan Lynch 154 11 14
Now the highest points per round average was 20.33333333 pts /round by Kevin Daney in 9th place with 9 rounds - Great consistent play Kevin. The fact that Larry Bright Jr. with 18 rounds was just slightly off the pts/rounds Average 20.05555556 but that demonstrates while he is at the #1 spot -
So it shows that you have to get out and try to get as many rounds as possible in, two rounds per week in if you really want a chance to be in the top spots.
What else helps. Wins, Aces and Double Points
Ok let's take a quick look at what it takes to make it in the top Ten of 69 players during the Ohio Winter - First lets look at the average of the key stats of the top ten players:
Average stats for top ten players
249 Points
14.2 # of Rounds 1.0 Avg Rounds / week
14.2 # of Rounds Counted 1.0 Avg Rounds / week
17.582 Average Points per Rounds
17.582 Average Points per Counted rounds
2.7 Wins Larry had 7 the max, Andy Morrison had 5 and Kevin Daney was next with 4
0.0 Aces No Aces in the top 10 - Man that was a tough season....
154 Min points
361 Max points
207 Point Spread between 1st and 10th
Ok so the overall factor was # of rounds played and Wins. With the top four with over 18 rounds each.
Leaderboard Position Player, Points, Total Rounds, PTs/Round Ratio, Wins
1 Larry Bright Jr. 361 18 20.05555556 7
