Well we are in our final days of the Winter Point Series. I thought I would provide some key info related to the wrap up of an awesome winter season and provide some insights for the improvements to the Summer Season that is about to begin.
So with this Saturday (Mar 17th) being the last day for the Michigan Winter Cooperative Point Series – MiCPS-W (https://www.discgolfscene.com/leagues/DGLA_Michigan_Cooperative_Point_Series-Summer_2012), it a good time to remind participating leagues and clubs that we will lock the stats as of Friday night (Mar 23rd) at Midnight. Whatever is posted to the MiCPS-W leader board will be the official standings. This gives the leagues coordinators a few days after the last rounds to get the data entered. And Thanks to all the leagues coordinators and clubs for your efforts to make this season so much fun for all us players. Week after week you guys ensure we have these great gatherings of players, you prepare in advance to ensure score cards and signup sheets, CTP flags and all the other details are dealt with so players can just show up and play disc golf with friends new and old. I’d also like to thanks those players who help out the league coordinators in so many ways. From filling in when “life happens†to simple little items that helps the League coordinators as they are busy trying to organize while everyone else is warming up or practicing. Your help is really appreciated – it truly is a cooperative effort to keep leagues going week after week, year after year and trying to make it better each time with very little or no money.
Ok so Friday Mar 23rd it will be official who has captured the top position in the State Wide Michigan Disc Golf Leagues Winter Cooperative Point Series – The Michigan Winter Disc Golf League Champion. So what else is there besides a long @ss title to recognize this player and the many others who took on the challenge of battling the Michigan Winter elements and some of the best disc golf players in the world, those who demonstrated commitment, perseverance, and ability to consistently excel in the battle that occurred all Winter long? Well we will be using all the registration fees to buy some amazing prizes and trophies – I was thinking a Car or an all expense vacation to the tropics but then I was reminded that this is all free and there is no money to properly reward the champion and all those who had fun all winter long even in the few rare below 15 degree league rounds. But wait – somehow we did manage to secure some goodies. How about some berths to the biggest and most prestige’s Disc Golf tournament for Michigan Disc Golfers – Yes you got it – The MDGO – Michigan State Disc Golf Championship – to held in Ludington where the largest gathering of Disc Golfers will gather and battle and celebrate another great year of Michigan Disc Golfers. The Berths were just distributed by the MDGO to the Michigan clubs. DGLA was fortunate to secure 7 of the highly coveted berths and berth packages. We are hoping to have a few more to be able to reward the achievements of many players during the MiCPS Winter & Summer. Last year a few clubs donated a couple berths – which is amazing and we appreciate their vision and cooperative participation in helping to make the Point Series even more fun and Rewarding. So we will not know the actual number of berths we have to award yet but we will be awarding at least three berths for the Winter Point Series, maybe more, based on the leaderboard standing. The rest will be awarded during the Summer Point Series.
So what about the Summer Point Series? Again we try and improve each season – so what is in store for this season, which starts on April 1st and will run until July 28th, a few weeks before the Michigan State Championship. Well the wizard behind our beloved DiscGolfScene, Pete, is as always looking at what can be done to make things easier and more fun at the same time. We are looking at ways to recognize players on a monthly basis – who are the big winners, who has played the most league rounds and other exciting stats and achievements. Pete, Scott and I have been busy improving the organization that bring us the Point Series – DGLA – The Disc Golf League Association, Inc – soon to be a non-profit 501C(3). We have been reading players comments, talking with leagues, clubs, businesses and many others. Our overall goals are listed on the DGLA website in our published Articles of incorporation and by-laws but as the organizations name indicates we are focused on growing and improving Disc Golf Leagues. We have collected information as a starting point for creating and improving leagues. There are templates and tutorials which we will continue to grow and improve and look to feedback and input from everyone.
To improve Disc Golf leagues there are many related activities such as the courses we play on. Besides building more courses we need to ensure the existing courses are maintained and hopefully improved based on the cool ideas of players and successes at other courses by those who take on or assist with these projects. Collecting and sharing of information is powerful and key to us reaching greater heights. So first we need to collect information to help, from course projects, to resources to help clubs, leagues, players and businesses. We are adding tools to collect this information – starting with a Disc Golf Resource directory – who makes, sells or provides services related to disc golf. How can this help? League and clubs are always looking for ways to raise money or have better stuff to offer players. Course designers need info, and products to build better courses. Also how many times have you needed a disc or some other disc golf related item and know there has to be a rank in a nearby store but had no idea how to find it. I’m sure we all know a little mom and pop shop that has a disc rank that most people even other locals don’t know about. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to find them easily, read a review about a shop before traveling to see if it’s just one rank of discs, a full offering, competitive prices etc.
Have you ever wondered what disc golf projects are going on in your area or who is leading a project, what the status is or how to get funding or approval for a project. We are helping there as well. By collecting details about projects that are planned or underway, help connect those people who want to help with those who are organizing these activities and hopefully help with some real cash as a grant for some great projects. Now how would Course Improvement Grants be funded? Well it’s hard when everything is free but that is an important aspect of the point series for us. Focused on encouraging as many players as possible to participate and play more we view that keeping the the option for participating free is a key attribute to the largest participation and it keeps the money in the local leagues and clubs hands, who ultimately need it to ensure their activities, your leagues can be sustainable and hopefully grow and improve. As with all aspects of the point series and the DGLA activities we start with the basics and build over time. If the disc golf players like or dislike what we are doing they let us know and we work with the local leagues, clubs and players to explore improvements and new ideas. We strongly believe we are on the right path and many are expressing their thanks and some ask how they can help. We (DGLA) like to make the growth and method of achieving our goals fun and involve all who want to be a part of it. We decided that we should formalize our organization and then begin to formalize the participation. This is now moving ahead. We are an official tax entity in the view of our governments (local and Federal) and we are in the process of protecting what money we are able to gather so it all can be focused on helping the disc golf community. Our website conveys the details and now offers a way for you to show your involvement and or belief in the ideas of the organization and help steer the organization in the future. Membership is free – it helps us show the world that people and players believe in the ideas and over time help sponsors to see the potential that we represent. The potential is great. As League players we could easily represent many more times the number of players than in any other Disc Golf related group or organization because we represent almost all players, from tournament players, to casual players and everyone in between who all plays leagues. We hope to continue to add additional projects, activities, information and utilities to what DGLA offers and continue to look for those who want to help – There are endless ways to help and with a talents and efforts of the collective disc golf community we can achieve amazing things – cooperatively….
So how does this affect the Point Series? Well the point series means different things to different people. Every player has different reason why they play as well as constraints that impact how often and how serious they take this. In trying to be all things to all players (impossible but we continue to try) we have come up with a way to keep it free for all who just want to be a part of it as in the past but also let those who want to have some “Skin in the Game†with some rewards for their achievements we will be offering that as well. In short – for less than the price of a local tournament you can compete all season long with multiple opportunities to be rewarded. You get a DGLA Members only “Players Membership†players pack and are eligible for awards based on your performance in the point series, competing only with the other Player Members. $30 is the cost, you get the player package, voting rights, life time DGLA membership number and the satisfaction to know you are helping to improve the Disc Golf Courses in your state. Yes - half of that $30 is put into the State Disc Golf Course Grant program, which voting members will determine which projects within their state receive a DGLA Disc Golf Course improvement grant. So the Summer Point Series will have some new and exciting aspects this year – It’s going to be a wild and fun summer for Michigan Disc Golf Leagues…. Thanks for your continued participation and support. Together we are making this sport in Michigan and elsewhere better and better – Thanks!
Check out DiscGolfLeagueAssociation.org for more information on membership, the Disc Golf Resource directory, The Disc Golf Course improvement and grant program and other info. Your feedback is always appreciated, your involvement could very well be the critical piece needed to help Disc Golf reach new heights - don’t under estimate what even the smallest contribution of ideas, or assistance can mean to the cooperative collaborative collected achievement and the impact that will have for all players for years to come.
So please consider joining DGLA it’s free – Soon we will add the option to upgrade to two additional levels of voting membership. For now you can show your support and secure your DGLA life time membership number. Members will receive a DGLA member’s newsletter with new information as it becomes available on all these activities. Your email and state are critical fields to ensure information and projects can successfully be managed and your informed about activities in your area. Also coming soon: the rating and review feature for the Disc Golf Resource Directory. Please add any business or services providers you know of – especially those shops in your area that others may not be aware of. The DGLA disc Golf Course project database and grant program – some details are already listed on the DGLA site. Your participation in collecting this information is key to its success and it will help other activities in ways we have not begun to image but we keep dreaming and improving with your help.
Clubs and leagues which desire to be included in the largest Michigan state wide Disc Golf League season activity (MiCPS-Summer 2012) please send Scott and myself the link to your Summer 2012 league and we will add it and provide your request for the date of your Highlighted League of the Week (HLW) and we will try to accommodate your request. Please check the MDGO schedule of events to ensure no conflict with other events in your area.
Ok we are in Week 13 of the MiCPS-Winter, with only five weeks to go including this one. The MiCPS-W ends March 17th.
You may be thinking that I just don’t get enough rounds in a week to compete. Well we are in week 13, if you got two rounds in a week you would have 26 by the end of this week. If you played a few extra it would help but in the top 20 currently we have two players that only have 8 or 9 rounds. Kirk Haggadone at 17th has 8 round, 286 points with one Ace an ...

You may be thinking that I just don’t get enough rounds in a week to compete. Well we are in week 13, if you got two rounds in a week you would have 26 by the end of this week. If you played a few extra it would help but in the top 20 currently we have two players that only have 8 or 9 rounds. Kirk Haggadone at 17th has 8 round, 286 points with one Ace and three league winning rounds – that is the best points per round average in the top 20. Andrew Kaluk also made the top 20 with only 9 rounds played, also one Ace and one League winning round. Pat Burke just edge out Andrew for the second highest points/round average with 31.80 points /round. Pat also has 1 Ace but has three league winning rounds helped to elevate him to 13th place.
Aces seem to help but there are only 8 of the top 20 who have aces. Justin Holley has two Aces which is the most for anyone in the top 20. Justin has 18 rounds which is the average for the top 20, as well as 5 league winning rounds which is also the average (4.75) for the top 20. The most league winning rounds is currently 13 held by Jay Binienda sitting in 2nd place. Just behind him in league round wins is Samuel Smith with 12 wins, but Sam has an Ace and has played 31 league rounds – Yup 31 – I envy that stats alone – how I wish I could play that many rounds in 13 weeks – Ok and I wish I could do it as consistently as Sam as well. Ok back to reality - all that has earned Sam 510 points and firmly placed Sam at the number one spot for a few weeks now. But the group is closing in……
So what is the spread – Jay needs 55 points to catch Sam for the top position but Sam will not make that an easy gap to close. All the others in the top 20 are between 1 and 28 points from moving up a rung on the leader board.
So the bottom line:
Aces help – I suggest everyone grab one or two before the end of the winter season – besides the points they are just fun to hit and usually there are some extra bucks in it for yeah – go for it!
Winning a few league rounds – seems to be a no brainer but it’s not a must. The average for the top 20 is only 4.75 league round wins and there are three in these, who’s who of Michigan Winter Disc Golf League players, who only have one league round wins. The ultimate winning formula is to play often and if you can play consistently well you will be up with the big dogs on the top of the Michigan Cooperative Point Series leaderboard.
There are five weeks left. Maybe only a few double points days left before Spring arrives and helps us celebrate the end of another wonderful Michigan winter Disc Golf league season. There is still time to change your standing on the leader board and a lot of fun to be had trying – enjoy those league rounds….
More stats and fun to come…..

All Michigan leagues are welcome and there is no cost to leagues or players to participate. We hope to see some more leagues jump on the point’s wagon and be a part of this State Wide Point Series. The more players the more fun and then more players will join in and even more fun – that attracts sponsors and we all get to have even more fun while growing the sport – Play on Garth.
Cutoff Date: Dec 31st 2011 – last day to add any additional leagues to the MiCPS Winter.
Key highlights and details for Winter:
We have some MDGO Mi State Championship berths up for grabs again – more on that as the season progresses. We have a few other new twist to try and spice up the Winter Point Series but you’ll have to wait to see what is under the tree this season – Ho Ho Ho
What we can tell you now for those who are willing to take on the winter conditions:
Winter Aces: Worth 50 points – League Admin – this is automatically calculated so if you want to use a different point system for your individual league Aces you can.
Ice Cold Points: If the temperature drops below 15 degrees with wind chill for your league round, the league Admin just needs to notify us and we will confirm the weather data and update the schedule for that league round to Double Points.
A few Reminders:
The MiCPS automatically keeps your best two rounds per week (Sunday - Saturday) when calculating your MiCPS total points. This is automatically re-calculated when ever new scores are posted or scores are updated.
Also for Handicap league - You must enter the handicap adjusted scores - the same ones used for payouts and awards, must be the submitted scores for your league round. Disc Golf Scene is looking into helping with this and we are exploring other options to help Handicapped leagues but for now this is the fairest way for all players and leagues to be combined into a state wide point series.
Yes every round can help - with the three tier point system based on the number of players in a given round even rounds with only a few players can make a difference. You must have 4 players for the round to be included but 1st place will be getting 18 points and maybe double if it's below 15 degrees - play often.
Players must have a profile on Disc Golf Scene to be linked and automatically accumulate points in the MiCPS.
Players must have their profile linked in the leagues they play to have those rounds count for points in the MiCPS - Contact the League admin if you need to be linked - they need your PDGA # or Email address listed in your DGS profile to link you. Help the League coordinator out – they make all this fun possible.
So get out and play lots of Michigan Winter Disc Golf and stay out of the snow covered shoal.

Winter MICPS Complete
Wow, what a winter for Michigan Leagues, eh? We didn't get out those shovels too much (at least in SE Michigan) and now we're already speeding fast through spring..
Thanks to all of the players and league coordinators who took part in this MICPS point series. This would really be nothing with out all of you. Thanks also the significant others of the players and league coordinators, the real "league coordinators".. :)

Foz and I just want to recognize this season and the top players. We have some State Finals berths to award and we are in process of contacting the players right now. The winners will be announced once we finalize the berth winners.
All season long it has been a really close battle for #1 between Sam and Jay. At the end of it all it came down to Sam winning by a very slim 13 point margin. The remaining top 10 in points after a 100+ point gap was pretty close, with Doug Watson in 3rd, Chilly in 4th, Justin Holley 5th, Ron Howard 6th, Ken Mango 7th, Marcos Aguilera 8th, Mark Ellis 9th and Jim Daniels in 10th. There are your league warriors folks...
We are in process of creating a traveling trophy, and that will likely be debuted for the Summer 2012 season.
We have also begun to roll out the DGLA memberships. This is our way of building up this grassroots league point series into something that will eventually be quite rewarding to members, including many more prizes to be won based on your league points earned, course improvement and grant programs, and partnerships with local charities. This is just beginning to roll out, so heads up on future announcements related to DGLA memberships. More info is here:

Thanks again, and we'll see you in a few months for the beginning of the Summer 2012 Season!!! This year we hope to build on the next and offer some nice additional prizes for the paying members! Please contact Foz or I (Scott) with requests to include your league in the Summer 2012 Season. It is free for all to participate, and free for leagues to join. Enjoy the spring weather and we'll see you out on the course!
