Week 10 Recap

Low-attended final week of leagues, but another gorgeous day out at Peter's Creek, with the field shooting really well. Come on out tonight at 6 to help out with cleaning the course up for Jailhouse Roc! (and then stay for doubles, if you're into that sort of thing)

I slipped into first in A Pool by one stroke, bogeying the second hole I played, but keeping it clean the rest of the way, to nab a 47. Jarod O'Brien made his debut in the final week, tying Marshall Morris with a 48 for second place. Marshall also grabbed the ace on 16, finally grabbing a healthy $50. Shout our to Justin Dunker who was the only 2 on hole 7, and Jarod for nabbing the 2 on 15. Helps when you can throw a putter or whatever 350 feet. Some day the PDGA will make that illegal.

Boydo took down B-pool with a 50, nudging out Josh Jarvis and Robert Johnson by one stroke. Some really solid scores overall, with 10/14 players shooting below par (in recent PC leagues it was well under half of the field).

Mike Briseno grabbed B pool with a 53 - he was one of two folks to pick up the birdie on 5 Blue. Loren grabbed solo second with a 54 - it was a pretty flat showing overall, with 11 people shooting between 53 and 56, and A pool didn't do a whole lot better than B pool this week.

We're down to just 8 spots left for Spirit of 76, so if you want to play this Saturday, make sure to get signed up soon! I'm not going to do 5-packs, so 36 is the hard cap on entries...unless the homeless camps come back and we move the tourney to PC.

Week 9 - Davis Park

Hi, folks, reminder to get your money in if you're coming out this week! We'll be out at Davis, and assuming everything set up right, we'll have holes 4 and 8 put back into the short locations. Thanks to Adam Klein for getting that done! All other pin locations should be where they were a few weeks ago when we played here.

This will be the layout for Spirit of '76, too, so don't miss your chance to get a taste of the competition.

Aaron Ressler took down A pool with a smoking-hot, bogey-free, 9 under 45, which will probably be 1000-rated once the final league numbers are submitted (ratings this week were a little lower than normal). He also got the only 2 I've ever seen on Hole 4...I've heard legends of this, mostly when I argue that Hole 4 should be par-4, but he really did it! Dan Allen started off 6 under through 10 holes, but slummed it up with me to tie for second with a 50.

Rod Stepp was lacing lines all evening, taking a bogey-free 7 under to win B pool. You can only hide out with that 899 rating so long, Rod! Loren Benedict took down second with a 50, carding just one bogey.

I'll get payouts out soon - another personal plug to sign up for Spirit of 76! I've heard some concerns that with the limitation of 36 players you'll be stuck with the same people for 4 rounds, for like 14 hours, so I'm going to mix up the cards for the first two rounds. Then in the afternoon you'll play with your division as the competition gets real. Week 9 will be at a (hopefully cleaned up) Davis, to get folks one last rep on the course before the tournament.

Week 8 - Peter's Creek

Just a reminder, Peter's Creek tonight! I've been trying to alternate Davis and PC when we do non-special rounds, but I wanted to line up the league with Spirit of 76 (which you should sign up for!), AND in theory the course will be cleared of homeless camps for week 9 while I'm not as certain of that right now. So...PC it is this week!

Payments just went out for week 7; sorry about the delay. I had to lick my literal wounds from this weekend.

Good crowd came all the way up to Meier Lake for Tuesday leagues, especially considering the gas prices! 21 folks battled the bugs and the rough out there last night.

Again, thanks to everyone for coming out - that was probably the toughest course we've played at leagues since Hilltop was operational. I'm starting to warm to this course, and I imagine a few of the issues that were present last night will be cleared up by Friday (I've emailed them about the branch on 14 - I'm not 100% sure that's NOT an intended part of the course but honestly I think it's kind of stupid if it is.) I've also updated the pars on the layout so you get to see a nice green number if you got a 3 on 16 or whatever. (I just didn't want to see dark gray on my 5s on 4 and 16.) I think maybe with the exception of one hole, that was the layout we'll be playing for Battle Under The Midnight Sun on Friday - there's still plenty of time to sign up for that and the Meier Lake Classic - if you played last night, you now have an advantage!

Next week is at Meier Lake, and I want to go over a few things:

First, this is a treat! They're charging like $12 a round normally, but for leagues they're only charging us $1/player - there won't be an ace pool week 7 (either paying in or paying out) to keep the league fees at $8/$11. But this will be a great way to get a practice round in for cheap if you're playing in the tournaments next weekend.

Next week is at Meier Lake, and I want to go over a few things:

17 hearty fools came out last night - I don't know who gave them the idea that it wouldn't be rainy. It actually cleared up pretty well, though, and it was a pleasant evening at Peter's Creek. I didn't even notice all that many mosquitoes, although maybe that's because of the gallon of deet I dumped on myself.

If we had a burgeoning ace pool, I might start a second ace pot for folks who either are the only bogey-free round or get the lone birdie on a hole. But alas we've been getting an ace every other week so that's not needed for now.

Aaron Gray took down B pool, also with a 49. He, Mike Briseno (second place), and Rod Stepp were the only folks to keep their bogey total to just one. Rod managed to bogey his second hole, and then take 16 straight pars! Aaron, today is a bittersweet day - averaging a 935 rating on your first three leagues, can only mean one thing: you're moving on up! See you in A pool next week!

We also welcomed Justin Clifton to the league - he was treated badly by PC this time, but hopefully you'll be back out here to get your revenge!

In theory the clouds should be clearing up soon, too - don't let the current gloom scare you! You'll be able to add a nice layer to that base tan you got out at Nikiski this weekend.

Reminder to get your money in if you're playing tomorrow night - PC should be fun! If you send me money on the weekend, usually I'm in the middle of a tournament, so make sure I noticed it. I only saw one payment (from Tommy Moore) so far, so he's all I have in there - if you sent me money and you don't see yourself with a hole assignment on the PDGA page within an hour or so (on Monday or Tuesday), then I probably missed your payment.

15 folks came out on a beautiful (weather) day to battle the trees, the new tough pin positions, and the homeless camps at Davis Park. (Seriously, I've sent an email to Parks and Rec about this - I will make sure this is cleaned up by Spirit of 76, which you should all sign up for.)

Next week is Peter's Creek - and then week 7 is Meier Lake! I've heard some of the Dynamic Discs team will be joining us, so that should be exciting!

Week 4 Recap

I realize I neglected to recap week 4! 17 people played in Girdwood last Tuesday, a great turnout for $5/gallon gas!

Joe Schacht took down A pool with a bogey-free -10, getting all of 7 through 12. Kelley Williamson previewed his third-place finish on Sunday by nabbing second place with a -8.

Marty Zender and Rod Stepp tied for first in B pool with a -4 - both played very clean rounds, with Marty going bogey-free and Rod only taking one bogey.

No aces in week 4 - a surprise, given how many aces it seems like there are at Girdwood tournaments.

Hi - there was a mistake in the transfer of scores over from PDGA, so I had to update B pool.

I'd like to get a good group down to Girdwood for week 4 - I'll be leaving from downtown Anchorage around 4:00 on Tuesday, and I can probably fit like 1-2 other people in my car, either if you meet me downtown, or if you're on my way out of town. I encourage other carpools! I think gas is like $5/gallon now!

First 60-degree day of the year, a beautiful league night out at Peter's Creek. 17 people came out to try the new (since last year anyways) pin layout.

I managed to avoid any bogeys and beat my PB at PC with a 45 - 1006-rated, putting to rest claims that you can't shoot 1000-rated without 1000-rated players in the field. Kelley Williamson nailed like 3-4 huge obstructed C2 putts to grab second place with a 50.

Shout out to Weslee Moon, who drained the ace pool completely by sinking his first shot of the day on 17. He also had one of the weirdest looking scorecards I've ever seen, shooting even with one ace, two bogeys, and 15 pars.

Payouts will go out today or tomorrow.

Just a note on pools - if you don't have a rating (yet/at all), after 2-3 weeks I'm going to use the ratings from league rounds and/or tournaments you've played this year to determine your pool. I want people to be able to shoot a hot round and win B pool if that's where they belong...but if there's no other evidence and you've shot 950 three weeks into the league, you're going to A pool. If you DO have a rating, though, that's gospel. Even if I saw Morgan destroy Alcan at the Noodle Arm Invitational last weekend, I'm waiting until he's over 900 according to the PDGA.

There are going to be some new trees we can miss! I've talked with Meier Lake, and we're going to have leagues there on June 14. This is the week of the Meier Lake Classic and the Battle Under The Midnight Sun. We also might get some folks from Team Dynamic in the league!

Week 1 - Davis Park Recap

I wasn't there for the start of the league, but we had 11 folks show up - it always takes a little while for stuff to get going, so I'm hoping we get it above 20 regularly by the heart of the summer.

Hunter Thompson went gonzo on the blues, grabbing the birdie on 4 through 9. His 48 was good for a 1001-rated round, putting rest to claims that you can't shoot 1000-rated without 1000-rated players in the field.

Rod Stepp took down B pool, sprinkling enough birdies in to offset the double bogey that most mortals take on blue 5 or 6 to shoot even par.

Ace update!

There have been two aces in the league on two consecutive weeks so I want to just be transparent about the math/payouts:

As of week 1, the ace pot was at $129 - Kelly Williamson hit an ace and since it was over $100, he got half of it, or $65. There was $64 left in the pot.

On week 2, we had 17 players, so ace pot was up to $81. Since this was more than $50, and less than $100, when Dimitri Kutsev hit an ace, he got $50. There is $31 left in the pot.

I just got back from travel, so I'll get last week's scores posted and payouts done ASAP - I'll probably do them Wednesday along with Week 2. But in the meantime, let me know if you're coming tomorrow - we're going to be up at Alcan in order to prepare for the Noodle Arm Invitational. I'm leaving from downtown around 4pm and I can probably take 1-2 people in my car if folks want to play but don't feel like paying $15 in gas for the round trip out there.

Week 1 - Davis Park

Hi, folks - I'll be out of town for this week 1, but I should be able to do hole assignments remotely. It's important that you sign up earlier if you can, though - check the league description for info on where to send your money. I'll be randomizing hole assignments from my volcanic island in the South Pacific this week, but in future weeks we'll be drawing cards. Make sure to be at your holes by 6:30 so we can get started on time!
