34 contestants came out to play in some ideal conditions (for winter), and we had a really tight battle, with the handicaps factored in.

1. Tyler Pohler: 36.4
2. Kristin White: 40
3. Joe Caissie: 40.7
4. Julia Musser: 42.4

Weirdly enough, since Tyler only played 3 rounds, Kristin only played 5, and I played all 10, all three of the top finishers got the same payout, or $75.31. Julia rounded out the top 4, picking up $15.06.

Congratulations to Joe Schacht, who didn't pick up the rating or any money for it, but his 47 would have been the lowest score on Davis for the entire league...he also would have hit the elusive Davis Bounty!

I'm going to do some work on the handicaps - I may tweak them a little bit downward. Another option is that we keep the same handicaps but we do two pools. From the early results, it looks like the handicaps are a little aggressive for the lower-rated players, so if we partition them off into a separate pool, that will mitigate things - and then if we're doing handicaps, it won't hurt so much if you tilt over the edge into the higher pool. Hitting both in one week - Week 9 sucked because I played like shit. But besides that, 28 brave souls came out to battle the single-digit temperatures at Westchester.

No one hit the bonus pool despite people repeatedly telling me that birdieing only 4 out of 6 of 6-7-8 X2 is disappointing. Dan Allen, he of C pool dominance until a few weeks ago, nailed 5 of 6, and James Beckner blasted a 28-footer at 6,000 miles per hour that somehow went through the pro-side chains his first time around on hole 7, and got all of the other 5 birdies. So close to grabbing that C-note, but no C-gar!

As you might guess from above, Beckner took down A pool with a blazing hot 41 - best league score, and only one ratings point short of Scott Groves' league record of 1036. Andrew Rodgers got out of second place in B pool definitively, with a score that would have been second even in A pool of 44. He loves that frozen tundra, like a kid out there on the playground. Mary Dempsey took down C pool with a really solid 58, and shouts to Kristin White and Hattie Welch for making it an all-ladies podium in C pool.

Week 10 was about 30 degrees warmer, and once again, no one hit an ace or got the Davis Bounty. Scott Groves and Robinson Culver both got 3s on 5, 6, and 9, but couldn't convert on 3 blue.

Scott made up for his near-miss on the Davis Bounty with an A-pool victory, taking down both the first and last week of league play. Britton Barnett grabbed B pool with a really solid 55 (he also creepily scored the same as me on 14 holes, including the entire Reds, and also a 4-3-6 finish on the Blues). Ryan Solberg took down C-pool for his first solo first-place finish.

Hi, folks - for the second straight league I've run, no one hit the Ace Pool! I've designed what I think will be a fun and fair playoff for the funds. Everyone who played a league round this year is eligible - you just have to let me know you're coming.

Two major elements: we're doing an 10-ratings-point-per-stroke handicap. The average stroke was worth 10.7 ratings points at Davis Park, but because trees and snow make things a little more random, and because 10 points is easier math, that's what each stroke will be worth. If you are a propagator, we'll use your rating. If you're not, then we're going to use your average rated round for the league.

Second: we're weighting payout by the number of league rounds you played. 4 places are going to pay out, 50-30-15-5. Let's use an example:

1. Jeremy Boyd (10 Rounds)
2. Jake Haskin (3 Rounds)
3. Nathan Alfano (1 Round)
4. James Beckner (7 Rounds)

Jeremy will get 10X50, or 500 points. Jake gets 3X30 or 90 points, Nathan gets 1X15 or 15 points, and James gets 7X5 or 35 points.

This is a total of 640 points awarded, and each point is worth 241/600, or 40.17 cents. Jeremy will get 5000.4017, or $201, Jake gets 900.4017, or $36, Nathan gets 150.4017, or $6, and James gets 350.4017, or $14.

So - everyone is eligible to play, but if you didn't play a ton of rounds, you probably won't win a ton of money. If you played a ton of rounds, you can possibly win almost all of the ace pot.

Let me know by Friday if you're in - there's some work to do to determine the handicaps, so I want to be able to let everyone know the strokes they're playing with.

I'll be getting week 9 payouts to people shortly and doing a recap of last week, but for now just want to remind everyone to let me know if you're coming out to Davis for the finale! We still have the Bounty (3s on 3, 5, 6, and 9 Blue) at $100, and an ace pot well over $100.

If someone gets an ace but no one hits the Davis Bounty this week, the ace will be awarded BOTH pots. Nice little payoff. If there are no aces this week, we'll have a playoff for the ace pot - something like the 16 people who came out to leagues the most. I'm thinking we'll do it at Davis on Saturday January 16th, and I'm going to institute a handicap system for the playoff. The pot will be split among something like the top 4 finishers. More details to come, but how about one of us hits an ace this week and makes it all moot?

I'm also looking into continuing the winter league for another 10 rounds. I know there's a cohort out there who don't like rated rounds in the winter, and so they've been raring to get going on a more informal competition. I think we might be able to start the next league a little earlier (like 10am?) and then the informal play can start at 1:30. If we do this, it'll probably start on January 23.

Only 22 out on the day after Christmas - the rest of you must have been home with your Tim Horton's and your back bacon, the traditional Boxing Day fare.

No aces still! Joe Schacht went into 9 Blue with a shot at the Davis Bounty, but couldn't hook up the 3 on that tough hole. This week the "Davis Bounty" becomes the "Westchester Bounty" - birdies on 6, 7, and 8 both times gets you the pot. Anything over $100 in the bounty pot, I'm putting into the regular ace pot.

Week 8 saw a tie at the top of A pool for the first time this year, and neither was Seth or James! Joe Schacht and Will Graham fought to a 990-rated tie with a pair of 50s. We're not doing tiebreakers because of COVID, but I hear there was an informal playoff that Joe Schacht won. Congratulations to both, but an extra congratulation to Joe.

Bill Brooks took down B pool for the third week in a row, and in doing so pushed his non-propagated rating up above 900...welcome to the big leagues, Bill! Britton Barnett had his first podium finish of leagues (and first 900-rated round), and Dan Allen finished in the cash for the second straight time since his promotion to B pool.

Chase (still don't know your last name so I'm going to make it up) Pinkerton took down C pool with a really solid 59. Keeping it under 60 at Davis is an accomplishment whether you're playing in A pool or C pool.

Great week 7 of the league! All-time record of 34 folks came out and braved the fairly heavy snow - it looked like some of my favorite football games out there. Still no aces! This makes 17 weeks of league play that I've been running, roughly 250 player rounds, with not a single ace. Ace pot for both a regular ace and Davis Bounty (3s on all four of 3, 5, 6, and 9 Blue) will be around $100 this week. If no one hits the Davis Bounty, but for some reason we have two aces this week, I'll split both pools between the aces. I'm going to add a bonus bounty Week 9 if no one hits anything: get all 4 birdies on 6-9 both times at Westchester. Jake got the closest with 6 of them this week.

Surprisingly tough conditions out there - par was 13 points higher-rated than week 5 and 25 points higher than week 3. That's definitely why I donked a 10-foot par putt on hole 6 to start off my round.

James Beckner took down A pool for the second week in a row with a smokin' hot 43. Bill Brooks repeated in B pool as well with a 49. Shout out to Andrew Rodgers, who has come in 2nd four weeks in a row. Also to Dan Allen who just got promoted into B pool and managed to cash his first week there! Chad Solberg made the best of his relegation back to C pool with a resounding victory there - back to the big leagues for you next week!

I'm continuing to monitor the proper pools for the edge cases - feel free to message me if you think you're in the wrong pool; I'll consider your argument, but ultimately I'm just calculating what your PDGA rating would be if your past rounds plus rounds from this league were included. I'm giving it a week, too - I won't let just one great or terrible round pop you up or down.

Remember, if we have two aces Saturday, you'll split the whole ace pot which should be roughly $150 total. If we have one ace, you'll get $100 and the rest of the ace pot will form the new ace pot. None, and the Davis Park 3-for-all continues growing.

Great to see everyone out there! 31 people is a new winter league record for me - we had people starting on almost every hole, but from what I could tell, there were no serious backups. Good mask-wearing in the parking lot again, and the teepads were looking great thanks to Boyd, Beckner, and Seth (or so I have heard).

Still no aces! And no one managed to get a 3 on all four of the tough Blue holes, so that pot continues to build. What I'm going to do is, when we hit an ace, the money in the Davis bounty (if any) will revert to the regular ace pot. If we get two aces next week, we'll just split the money in both ace pots between the two. But if there are no aces next week, the Davis bounty pot will continue to grow.

James Beckner finished strong this week, taking down A Pool by two strokes, ending Seth Asing's three-week reign. Bill Brooks eked out his first B-pool win over three others by just one stroke. Dan Allen grabbed C pool all by himself this week, no need to split it with 3 other people like in Week 5!

I'm starting a second pool for Davis-only that the ace pot above $100 goes to: you can win it by getting a 3 or better on 12, 14, 15, AND 18 (that is, 3, 5, 6, and 9 blue). Seth Asing week 2 and Scott Groves week 4 are the only two people to even get 3 out of those 4. I've played Davis probably 50 times and never done it myself.

Thank you to the teepad fairy or elves or whomever scraped and salted most of the pads just before leagues! I went out there at 9am planning to do a fair amount of work, but there wasn't much left to do other than throw down a little fresh salt.

Seth Asing took down A-pool for the third straight week, also posting the league low round of 43. Oliver Salem, all jacked up by the great deal he got on his 4X Buzz, won B-pool by two strokes, which is a lot if you look at the logjam behind him. C Pool had an insane 4-way tie for first, with Ryan Solberg, Dan Allen, Jeremy Lukas, and Mary Dempsey all putting down solid 57s.

Still no aces! I'm almost sure we'll hit one before the end of leagues, but just announcing now that if we have any money left in the pot at the end, we'll do a special playoff among maybe like the 16 folks who came to the most league arounds.

Thanks to the folks who wore masks in the parking lot and stayed distanced around the teepads - it'll be great publicity for disc golf if we can say we ran a whole winter league with no transmission issues. See you out at Davis for Week 6!

Hi - we've had less opportunity for people to shoot the shit before and after rounds, and a lot of new players (which is great!) this league, so I wanted to clarify how I'm doing the pool assignments since there's just one cryptic message about it above.

If you are a propagator, meaning you have 7 or more rated rounds, your rating determines your pool. 900 and up is A, 800-899 is B, and less than 800 is C.

If you have a player rating but you're not a propagator, then I will give you your pool request, within reason. If you have a few tournament rounds averaging 870, I'm not putting you in C pool, but if you're at 815 and you want to play in C, that's ok. HOWEVER, if you're consistently shooting in the 800s in the league, I'm going to move you up to B pool. Same thing in the other direction if you're an 870-rated non-propagator, but you've been throwing 750-rated rounds...I will move you to C pool if you want.

Similar reasoning applies for folks without ratings at all - I'll put you in whatever you request to start out, but if you start dropping 800-rated rounds, you're going to B pool.

I apologize to folks who think this is unfair - I get that there's a big gap in skill between 800 and 899. But unless we move to a pure handicap system, this is how we've always done it...this is the best mix between having decent-sized divisions and keeping people competing with roughly their skill level. I don't particularly like handing my cash to touring pros James and Seth every week in A Pool, but I view my rating just nudging over 900 as a sign that I can maybe compete with the big dogs. Plus, the courses and conditions we play in are pretty good equalizers - I've thrown some of my highest and lowest-rated rounds in winter leagues.

25 warriors braved Davis Park, and Seth Asing was more like Seth Birdieing, picking up all of holes 1-5 and limiting the damage on the rest of the course to take down A Pool for the second straight week with a 52.

Jeremy Boyd, or should I say Jeremy Bird(ie), also dropped plenty of deuces all over Davis (including hole 7 - I know exactly the sexy forehand line he threw to get that one) and took down B Pool with a 56.

Chad Solberg didn't have a sole bird, but played steady golf and limited the damage to take down C pool. Keeping the big numbers away is the name of the game out at Davis.

See you out there week 5 at Westchester - remember, when we're in groups of 10 or more (i.e. the parking lot before the round), wear masks. It's great that the city is letting us continue this league amid the hunker down. Also, let me know if you're coming before 10am on Saturday!

I know this is outdoors, so it's relatively safe, but please, even outdoors, any time you're within 6 feet of someone, have a mask on. Sound like a hassle? Then get within 6 feet of someone as infrequently as possible.

Starting week 5, this is going to be a requirement from the muni - I wouldn't be surprised if folks from the muni check up on us, so if the see big clumps of people together, unmasked, in the parking lot, they might shut us down. This could lead to them taking out baskets, and maybe even endangering some of the early 2021 tournaments and leagues if the pandemic is still raging by then. I don't want this league to be the reason that happened.

Just FYI, Anchorage has just restricted outdoor gatherings to 10 people. I'm not sure how to deal with this - if we don't have a player's meeting, I'd argue that we're not "having a group experience within a single space" as the order directs. But I'm going to try and get some clarity on this. Last thing we want is for the ADGA or disc golfers in general to look like bad citizens. At minimum, we will not have a player's meeting - pay attention to the posts here so that you can get instructions. They'll be the same as Week 2. It's very possible we'll be postponing the league indefinitely until this.

For now, continue to let me know if you want to play this week - if we have to put it off, I'll just return your $$. If the limitation is 10 people, I won't hold the league - there's no point in just a 10-person league.

Thanks to everyone who came out this week! We raised $105.50 for Catholic Charities at what I'm calling the Frozen Hors D'Oeuvres event, on top of the dozens (?) of turkeys that were donated for the Frozen Turkey event in the afternoon.

Our Frozen Hors D'Oeuvres champion was Seth Asing, who came in with a smoking 10-under despite missing a tap-in on the final hole. Really wanted that 43 for you, bud. Oliver Salem also took down the B-pool with a really solid 46. Jeremy Lukas continued his solid performance in the C-pool (which was tons of people this week) with an even-par 54.

Davis Park this Saturday - PLEASE get your money in ahead of time - I really don't want to turn anyone away. You need to at least let me know you're coming by 10am on Saturday - you can get me money or Venmo me later but I have to make up the cards and get everyone set up since we're doing electronic scoring. If you JUST want to play in the morning, in the Winter League, either $8 OR a frozen turkey is the entry fee. Tell me if you're doing a turkey (bring it to Davis Park in the afternoon). Both the money and the turkey will go to the ADGA Frozen Turkey donation.

If you want to play in the afternoon in the Frozen Turkey Bowl, a frozen turkey is required. So if you're playing in the afternoon, you may as well come out for the morning, since you'll have donated the required turkey. But if you want to do both an $8 donation and a frozen turkey, I'm sure the charities will appreciate it.

If you've already paid $8 and you want to do a frozen turkey instead, let me know and I'll refund your $.

I've only got a few stragglers still paying with cash (ok, Boomer), so that's going smoothly too. If you haven't gotten your payouts from week 1 or week 2, that's because I don't have a way to pay you electronically yet.

James Beckner took down A-pool this week with a scorching 49, holding off Seth Asing right on his tail with a 50. Spencer Dyck (whose last name autocorrects to "fuck" in my phone) took down B pool with a 55, holding off Corey Steininger and Oliver Salem by one stroke. Dave Donaldson donaldnated C pool with a 61.

See you all at Westchester next week - remember we're doing something a little different: it's still $8 (even for non-ADGA members this week), but no payouts, no ace pool - and you have the option of donating a frozen turkey instead of the $8. All proceeds/food goes to charity. Then glow doubles immediately afterwards, at Davis. Let's try and get started right at 11 so that people have time to get over there.

Week 2 recap and payouts coming later today/this week.

Week 3 will be held in conjunction with the Frozen Turkey Tournament https://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/2020_Frozen_Turkey_Tourney/comments. There will be no payouts this week, but the admission fee for everyone is $8 OR one frozen turkey. Either will go to charity (see Frozen Turkey page for details). The round will still be rated. Donating a turkey also gets you into the doubles at Davis Park, across town, to start after our round.

Again, please pre-pay if you are paying cash, and if you are "paying" with a turkey, send me a text or email that you will be donating a turkey so that I can make up scorecards beforehand.

We'll try and have a player's meeting that's spaced out properly at 11am, but here's an update on the details:

We'll be doing electronic scoring, and if it says you're on hole 10, that's Blue 1. We're playing both layouts - last year with normal scorecards I believe we looped around and played all the Reds before starting in on the Blues. So for example, if you start on hole 5, you're playing Red 5-9, then Blue 1-9, then Red 1-4. I'll be lenient on this (as long as you ultimately play both Red and Blue), but try to play it in the right order so that we get good stats on the right holes.

Hole assignments are not final right now - I'm doing them so that you can confirm that you're registered for this week and I didn't miss your payment. Check the PDGA page (here: https://www.pdga.com/tour/event/47633) -- if you don't have a hole assignment, I don't have your money yet. Also, as a reward for registering early, the hole assignments are first-come first-served. Let me know with your registration (in the note) what hole you would prefer to start on (or your second/third choice) and I will do my best to get you started on that hole.

Hi folks, week 2 coming up fast. PLEASE get me your $ ahead of time via Venmo preferably (@joseph-caissie), or PayPal ([email redacted]). If you use PayPal, don't pay me unless you can figure out how to make "friends and family" work. If you don't do that, PayPal takes a fee off of the entry. It's a few cents at a time, but over the course of the 10-week league, it's going to cost me $50. You can also get me your $40 (new members) or $30 (renewing members) for 2021 ADGA membership.

I also haven't heard from three people who have payouts coming from week 1 - you need to make a PayPal or Venmo account (I prefer Venmo) so I can pay you.

Week 2 is looking good - sunny and 24. Pads will be clean! If you're new to snow golf, I want to encourage spotters - I suspect the snow is now deep enough to lose discs in.

Great week 1, everyone! Despite some chilly weather, a dusting of snow, and an unexpected competing tournament down on the Kenai, we had an excellent turnout!

Scott Groves just absolutely smoked everyone in the A Pool - we might have to move him up to the AA Pool next week. Robert Johnson took down B Pool with an extremely solid round at par. Then Jeremy Lukas took down C, picking up a couple of nice birdies on 13 and 14, and limiting the damage elsewhere. Lots of ties for the last payout spot, so some tiny payouts. Since I'm not having to hand out even dollars, I'm going to just do ties and divide by 2 or 3 or whatever, rather than doing a tiebreaker.

Payouts will be sent out at some point this week - if you paid in person, please get either Paypal or Venmo and let me know your handle on one of those aps - that is the method I will be providing payouts.

Week 2 (and subsequent even weeks) will be at Davis Park. PLEASE try to get your cash to me via Paypal or Venmo ahead of time - if you don't have the ap, maybe find someone who does, and give them cash. And if you need to pay the day of, shoot me a text or email letting me know you're coming. This will help with getting the hole groups set in a logical way, and letting people know their starting hole assignments ahead of time.

Just FYI, the city just prohibited "outdoor gatherings" of more than 30 people. Not sure if we count as a gathering, but I'm going to cap it at 30 if we were to get there tomorrow. We probably won't but a great way to guarantee you're in is to prepay (see Week 1 for how to do that).

In general, let's avoid extra contact - outdoors seems pretty safe in general but we really don't want any outbreaks traced to disc golf activities. Remote high fives/handshakes, etc. Reserve full-on-the-mouth kisses for only the best aces - none of those weak hole 4 aces.

Based on the weather forecast, it looks like Kincaid should be ungroomed by November 7, so we're on for starting the league there.

Because of the rampant COVID outbreak, I am encouraging you to preregister via Venmo or Paypal. I want to minimize handling of cash or other contact. My Venmo is @Joseph-Caissie, and my Paypal address is [email redacted]. Send me $8 (or $11 if you are not ADGA) and give me your PDGA number, if you have it, in the memo line. Leave a message on the board if you pay but don't see yourself reflected in the registration. I will take day-of registrations but due to possible technical snafus, it will be easier if you can get it to me the night before.
