THANK YOU . . . to everyone who attended this league. Ever since I came up with the idea behind this league I have thoroughly enjoyed it and I truly look forward to seeing everyone each Monday . . . I will not be there before league starts because of a golf tournament I am playing in, but I should be there afterwards with trophies and payouts from this league as well as being able to pull out the bins of discs for people to redeem things after league. I just thought I would make a post in case some of you planned to play your match early. Match Play is similar to skins only each hole is only worth 1 point. Here is a scenario that will explain how Match Play is scored.

Player A throws a 3 on Hole #1
Player B throws a 3 on Hole #1 . . . the hole is pushed and there is no score.

Player A throws a 2 on Hole #2
Player B throws a 3 on Hole #2 . . . Player A wins the hole and goes 1 Up.

Player A throws a 2 on Hole #3
Player B throws a 4 on Hole #3 . . . Player A goes wins the hole and goes 2 Up (1 point for Hole #2 and #3). It doesn't matter that Player A beat Player B by 2 throws . . . they simply won the hole with a better score.

Player A throws 2's on the next 7 holes
Player B throws 3's on the next 7 holes . . . Player A wins the match 9 & and 8 (meaning 9 Up with only 8 holes to play) . . . the match is over because Player B cannot win enough holes to catch Player A.

If you tie after 18 holes . . . it is sudden death and the winner will be the first person to win a hole outright.

The other difference with match play is that you can concede putts . . . that might be something you are not accustomed to in disc golf, but sometimes it pays to avoid frustration if you have thrown OB twice or lose 2 discs on a hole . . . and your opponent is under the basket . . . you might as well just let them have the hole and avoid more frustration. Regroup and focus on the next hole.

One other thing that really does matter . . . the furthest away ALWAYS plays first . . . no tapping out to get out of the way, you must let the furthest person away play. It flip flops the pressure back and forth with every throw. If someone plays out of turn . . . the player can make them re-throw that shot from the same spot IF THEY DESIRE.

Match Play is a much more mental game that takes constant adjustment on each hole and even moreso after each shot. If your opponent has the box and they throw a poor throw . . . play a little safer and don't risk as much. If your opponent parks it under the basket . .. you know you need to birdie also . . . and if your opponent aces . . . no reason to leave it short because you can still push the hole with an ace yourself!

It's all down to a few matches. Anyone who qualified can win their respective division with 3 Match play Wins. You can come in as an 8 seed . . . but still win the whole division. You just have to know how to play your opponent and not just your normal game. Here is how the divisions shape up:

Before everyone goes off and has all their weekend fun . . . I thought it would be a good reminder that we do still have 1 week of league left before the playoffs. Most of the playoff spots are decided but there are still some critical spots . . especially considering WEEK #10 is double points. Miss out this week and you might just miss out on the playoffs. Keep in mind . . . you need to have played 5 weeks minimum (including this coming week) and also finish in the Top 8 in the division. We do still drop your two lowest point total weeks . . . but if you are close . . . I suggest making it to league this coming week if you can!

It costs $10 for your first round (includes $1 ace pool entry and $1 course improvement donation) and $3 each additional round. I have most of the alternate tees set in my mind . . . but I will be marking them tomorrow before league begins. Nobody escaped Manic Mondays without being completely drenched. One group was unable to complete their round, and another group simply turned in their skins results because the scorecard had disintegrated.

Surely the weather played a factor in many people's scores . . . but there were a few others that were very good . . . Carrie Daubner tied her best round ever at Valley View with a (+11) in that weather and they were the last group in, which means they dealt with more rain and wind than those who finished earlier. Nice shooting Carrie . . . you apparently are self motivated to keep bettering your game . . . hopefully we will still be able to get some other women to compete against moving forward.

Jeff Friedwald also moved up to Intermediate for this week because he didn't want to compete against himself and he ended up taking the most skins of anyone on the night. I look forward to seeing Jeff compete in Intermediate during the next league session. Congratulations on figuring out whatever it is that you figured out . . . those breakthroughs are always fun to see.

I am hopeful next weeks weather is nicer and we are able to finally complete the Alternate Tees week that was supposed to be played 3 weeks ago. If the weather will not allow that to happen next week, I will have to come up with an alternative format and Alternate Tees will not be played this session.

I am back after a week long trip to the PDGA Headquarters in Georgia to learn about course design from the best designers in the world. I had a blast meeting those people and listening to their ideas and even presenting my own experiences for them to think about. NOW I am even more excited about course design and plan to do my best to continue to put more courses in the ground. Hopefully I can find some places with excellent land for more challenging courses!

I have posted the scores and the points, but until I have the scorecards in my hand and I can double check a couple scores I will not publish the payouts. Consider what is posted as unofficial because the photo I received of the cards was a little blurry and there were a couple scores in question because of that and a couple that were potentially incorrectly added up.

Well . . . no one got out of there dry today . . . because it started to come down anywhere between your 9th-12th hole probably. It was hard at times but once it rained everyone was drenched. How did you play after the rain came? Did you stand strong and keep chugging along or did you give in to wanting to be out of the rain and rush things? I know the mulligans were helpful for some, but I would imagine there were quite a few mulligans used to re-do putts . . . that ultimately also missed because of the strong and gusting winds. I am glad we did not do alternate tees which would have taken longer and many of the tees would have been slick or even underwater.

Congratulations to Brian Williams . . . who MAY have had his best round ever (-8) with only one of his mulligans saving him a throw. Even if it wasn't his best round ever . . . it is impressive in the conditions we played in tonight.

Get ready for Putters Only (I will be publishing a list of acceptable putters later on this page as well as on facebook and Nick will have it with him) week next week. Nick Williams will be the man running league (Red Van) so PLEASE BE KIND AND BE ON TIME. I will see you all on 5/12 for the Alternate Tees week! I will be back by Tuesday next week so if you are interested in another one of my leagues Humpday Huckers begins at Estabrook on 5/7 at 6:00 PM and is the same pricing ($6 plus $1 optional ace pool) as this league with an additional option, so I hope to see some of you then.

We are on for league . . . unless I make the decision to cancel by Noon today. It looks like the rain won't be too bad but if it does rain all day I am not sure I want to send everyone out on the wet course on temporary/mulch/grass tees. I don't want to do damage and I don't want anyone to hurt themselves.

If I do not cancel league by Noon . . . I will be arriving around 4:30 to either mark Alternate Tees or decide what other format would work this week.

Well this Bounty week was an experiment for me . . . I accomplished a little bit of what I intended but it also had an unintended consequence of not truly rewarding those who played really well. Sure EVERYONE got paid with this event . . . but even the people who ran away with scores in their division didn't win a much larger share than those who didn't do as well. Some of that might be due to the randomness of which bounty holes were selected, some of it might be due to 6 bounty holes being used, or other factors I cannot mathematically explain. It was worth a shot and I would change a couple things if I decide to do this format again . . . what did you think about the format, did you think about it during the round, did you just play your own normal game and take your chances, were you disappointed when you saw the payouts because you had an extraordinary week? Give me your feedback . . . I just don't like playing the same old thing every week.

Originally last night I had posted the results as the points earned but that would throw off anyone who likes to use their scores on discgolfscene so instead I changed them to the actual score. I will now list the points earned . . . there were only a couple instances where higher scores also meant more points, but multiple places where someone who had more birdies and bogeys did better than someone who had mostly pars. Did you play any differently? Did you putt more aggressively because there were more points to be had with more birdies?

Spring has arrived (55 degrees and partly cloudy) and we are in Week #3 for Manic Mondays. I expect to see a bit of a crowd out there tonight. This will also most likely be the last week I let people head out early. If you come early today and want to start playing, feel free to grab a scorecard early and get out there.

What did you throw and how did you think you did overall?

This week is Stableford where you are really rewarded for aggressive play! Try not to leave any putts short . . . even your drives for that matter because an ace and a par is worth more than 2 birdies!

The ace pool does not carry over into this format because it artificially encourages people to throw for aces . . . but any ace hit this week will get a portion of the weeks ace pool.

I hope the weather cooperates and the rain holds off . . . but I will be there regardless as will many others!

It was good to see some familiar faces at the first league night of Manic Mondays and it was just as good to see some new faces. I hope everyone comes to embrace the uniqueness of this league and its 10 different formats. We had 22 people show for league in mildly chilly weather with all sorts of ice still on the ground in the woods.

We had a pretty good grouping of people in three divisions and I still hope to see a decent number of people playing in the Recreational division too.

One thing I want everyone to keep in mind is that $1 of every entry fee is being put into the Match Play Finals for Week 11 and 12, so the more weeks you attend and the better you play the better chance you have of qualifying for the Match Play Finals . . . which also means your chance at additional cash (Open) and vouchers (amateurs). Last year just didn't work where I took league fees for those weeks where you were basically playing for that money. I wanted a way to reward solid play and consistent attendance and this seems to work the best and I hope it will keep everyone interested the entire season.

Formats: Divisional Singles Week - Cards will be Pick Your Own Group. Regular league format. CTP Week - Cards are sent out by divisional ranking. Points are based on your score but payout is bas ... show more ›

Divisional Singles Week - Cards will be Pick Your Own Group. Regular league format.

CTP Week - Cards are sent out by divisional ranking. Points are based on your score but payout is based completely around who was the closest to the pin on each hole.

Skins Game Week - Cards are sent out by divisional ranking. Points are based on your overall score but payout is based completely on your score compared to your cardmates. If you have the single lowest score on any hole you win a skin and a portion of the funds. Holes that have no individual low score carryover to the next hole (AKA 2 tie all tie). If after 18 holes there are still skins available the group must continue to play until the skin(s) have been decided. On any playoff holes only those who end up with the lowest score on each hole proceed to the next hole. So If 4 people go to Hole #19 because of a tie on #18 and two people get 2's while 2 people get 3's . . . only those who got the 2's proceed to Hole #20 until the skin is settled.

1 Disc Week - Cards will be randomly decided to encourage mixing of divisions and to help people learn from the discs others select and why. You can only carry one disc with you on this night. If you lose it, you are out of luck.

Alternate Tees Week - Cards will be randomly decided to encourage mixing of divisions and to help people learn from how others attack new shots. This week is scheduled because I need to setup the alternate tees before league. I will mark the tees the week before to give people a chance to scout the new lines to be played.

Putters Only Week - Cards will be by randomly decided. you can carry as many putters as you want as long as they fall on the approved putters list.

Stableford - Cards will be by Pick Your Own Group. This format rewards aggressiveness. Aces = 9 points, Birdies = 5 points, Pars = 2 points, Bogeys = 0 point, and Double Bogeys or worse = -1. All Aces split the INDIVIDUAL Ace Pool from this week, but if there are no aces the ace pool will carry over to the next week. Points and payout will be determined by the points you earn.

Mulligan Week - Cards will be by divisional ranking. Pros will get 1 mulligan, Advanced will get 2 mulligans, Intermediate will get 3 mulligans, Recreational will get 4 mulligans, Women and Juniors will get 5 mulligans to be used at any time. The intent to throw a mulligan must be announced within 30 seconds of the throw and the subsequent throw must also be thrown within 30 seconds of declaring your intent to use a mulligan. You always have the choice to use whichever throw is better. Points and payout will be by overall scores.

Bounty Week - Cards will go out by Pick Your Own Group. I will establish bounty holes where a specific score must be earned to get a portion of the bounty. Everyone within the division who achieves that score on that hole will get a portion of the bounty. There will be multiple bounty holes on the course that night for each division which will be randomly decided after the round so that even I do not know what holes are the bounty holes. Divisional points will be determined by your overall score, but payout will be completely by the Bounty Holes and Scores. If you beat the bounty score you will get 2 shares of the bounty while all others who achieved the bounty score will only get 1 share.

Double Points Singles - Cards will go out by divisional ranking. Same as week one but points are doubled to see who can rise to the occasion at the end of the season when the pressure is on.

MATCH PLAY FINALS

I would like to see how the divisions are shaping up before publishing the details of this completely. I will say this you will be eligible for Match Play if you attend 5 of the 10 weeks of this league. There will either be 4 or 8 spots per division based on attendance so if you want to ensure your placement in the playoffs, make sure to attend as often as you are able. $1 per week per player is being put into the Match Play Payouts which will not only encourage people to attend the league, but to also make sure they are able to qualify for the finals.

Week 11 and 12 June 2nd and 9th will be divisional seeded match play based on point totals from the first 10 weeks. Getting the most points does not guarantee you the Divisional win . . . you need to play well and win some matches to call yourself the league winner. If you didn't make the match play finals, you are encouraged to come caddy for your favorites, spectate the matches. These matches will be played in two-somes so the only thing the players have to think about is their own match and not be distracted by other matches.

Costs:

Ace Pool $1 is always optional for all players

Open, Advanced, Intermediate, and Recreational Divisions
$6 each week ($1 goes to the course funds, $1 goes to the season ending Trophies and prizes, $1 goes to the Match Play Finals, and $3 goes to weekly payouts). Open plays for cash while the other divisions are playing for funny money vouchers.

Women and Juniors Divisions
$4 each week ($1 goes to course funds, $2 goes to weekly payout, and $1 will go to season ending trophies and prizes. Payout is in funny money vouchers. If there is not enough attendance to do a Match Play event for these divisions, the $1 set aside for season ending trophies and prizes will be given back as vouchers to the people with highest attendance.
