The 2012 season is over and the Cup is “back where it belongs” according the Fall Cup winner, Sammy Jackson! And in putting it there, he scored the best single and best two rounds in Surgeon’s Cup recorded history. With a -17 in round one and a -13 in round two, his combined -30 is two strokes better than his previous records of -15 (shared with MaT) and -28 respectively.

If you will recall, he came into the fall Cup touting his threatening “Fear the B” marketing campaign and stating that “records will be broken!” While not going so far as to say “who” would break those records, he did indeed, make that prediction. And he did indeed, break them himself!

With the double points format in place for both Cup rounds, Sammy also finished out the season with the League Points title. Double congratulations to Sammy.

Wayne finished in second by throwing his best round of the season (-13) and finishing at -24 for the tournament.

Brad, who was tied with Wayne coming into the round, fell two strokes back by the turn and gave up two more when Wayne hit an eagle on ten. Brad was able to get one back on thirteen but returned the favor on the final hole and finished the tournament at -20.

MaT and Robby, battling for fourth, were within a stroke of each other until Robby, on the lofty and forgiving Hole 17, went for the hole on a long approach shot and ended up with a bogey. MaT finished the tournament at -13 to Robby’s -10.

Dean finished out with a seven over on the round to end the tournament at +8.

Sammy scored the highest round ever for a Surgeon’s Cup round at -17! Add that to the fact, that he also holds the all time course record of -19, and you have what will likely be a “ho-hum” round for the Cup next Wednesday.

However, there will be a couple of other battles going on behind our leader.

Six strokes behind Sammy are Brad and Wayne (tied at -11). Wayne, who started the round with two bogies, fought back ending with an ace on 18 to tie Brad, and five strokes behind them, are MaT and Robby at -6, some 4 to 5 strokes off their season averages. Dean rounds out the group at +1.

Not since the summer of 2010, has there ever been a larger recorded first round stroke lead, in a Surgeon’s Cup tournament. On July 14 of that year, it was MaT over Robby -15 to -10. MaT would go on to win but it would be BOB, not Robby, who would take second place. All that means is that it’s never over until it is over!

And then there are those league points. If you take a look at them (and they do seem to express consistency) you will see that this round changed the standings a bit. Sammy is now a half point in front of Robby and MaT is only six points behind him. The season ending “double points” format has had an impact on how the league points play out. When the going gets tough, the tough seem to get going! Winning both the Cup and the League is not that easy.

I also need to advise all NFGA members that, after an extensive review, there is nothing in the NFGA charter, nor any charter for any organization with which I am affiliated, nor within the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), that allows any latent video review, of any hole, to reverse any decision that was accepted for the recorded play on that hole. Accordingly, the video that has recently surfaced (which clearly shows a missed, yet counted hole out) has no bearing on the final score of the associated round.

First and foremost, the league wishes to extend its condolences to MaT and his family for the loss of his grandmother.

The winds calmed and four players would throw the last tune up round of the season before the coveted Surgeon’s Cup kicks off next Wednesday.

No one in the group hit anywhere close to their season best; but all seemed to be taking the course a bit more seriously than the typical round. Admittedly, there were several scoring corrections discussed and agreed to, during this round. All corrections favored the player who had inadvertently scored himself worse than actual. In fact, and while it had no impact on league points or finishing position, Wayne actually shorted himself a stroke, even with the final tally. As a result, and for consideration next season, I submit that the NFGA keep a scorecard for every round and that strokes per hole be the tally method.

Back to the round summary:

Brad scored a Home Owner’s Association medallion on Hole 5.

While the double point scenario was in place for this round, the league point’s standings only changed to create a tie between MaT and Sammy, who are now knotted up for second place.

The APAR remains at 10 but it is actually at 10.8 and, unlike earlier predictions, will likely change to 11 before this league is finished. Does anyone need a lesson on APAR? Does anyone care about league points?

Another great night for a game; and this night, the group embarked upon a new format heretofore to be known as BestB.

Six players were randomly divided into two teams who squared off in a match play format reminiscent of last weekend’s ball golf Ryder Cup.

Unlike ball golf, the NFGA plays mob golf, whereby everyone plays in a single group. While questionable from an efficiency perspective, this format has allowed the group to play unencumbered; as most neighbors are somewhat reluctant to challenge a mob of men for any reason, what so ever. Accordingly this night, the BestB version of Frisbee Golf entailed two teams of three, all playing together in a single group.

With six players, the League Scoring adjustment for the BestB format, offered each member of the winning team 6 points and each member of the non-winning team 3 points. Each player played an individual round while the lowest player’s score was recorded as the score for that respective player’s team.

While the team of Sammy, Brad and Wayne had the advantage on twelve holes and played all squared on 4, the team of MaT, Robby and Dean turned the round on holes 16 and 17 to win by a one-up margin. At the end of the day Sammy, Brad and Wayne won three holes while MaT, Robby and Dean won 4.

The group seemed to enjoy the BestB match play format and it was agreed that other match play type rounds should be considered for future rounds.

A single Postal Service medallion was awarded to Brad for a hit on Hole 5.

Additionally, a motion was tabled that, due to the earlier and earlier onset of darkness, the Surgeon’s Cup may need to be moved to an earlier date. However, since there are only three more scheduled rounds, including the Cup rounds, it does not seem beneficial to change the season schedule at this late date. We have played into darkness before and, if we can try our best to tee off on time, we should be able to get the season done with a minimum loss of Frisbees.

Once again we wish to thank Al Gore for global warming and the earlier and earlier onset of darkness.

Duluth, GA USA (AP) – The temperature was a little warmer this evening but the rounds were somewhat cool. Drives seemed to be shorter and fewer seemed to find the fairway.

Not a bad round all-in-all, but not much to write home about.

Statistically speaking, the league APAR moved to 10 which coupled with the double points format has put some additional spread in the point standings. Movement included Russell and Altone who advanced one position each.

If historical data holds for the rest of this season, it is doubtful that our APAR will change. That means we will end the season using every player’s best 10 rounds.

Medallion awards went to Sammy (Automobile Association on 2) and Dean (Homeowners on 5). After Dean’s throw, a motion to create a new category for a Homeowner’s “Roofing” Association was considered, but was voted down by the on course committee due to its ‘hopefully’ rare nature.

Another rarity for the league, and possible consideration for a new category (Crimson Tide comes to mind), was demonstrated by Brad who stubbed his toe and drew blood on an approach to hole nine. Anytime the league witnesses blood, Patrick Wiggins “Bloody Wiggins” comes to mind and a complete reconstruction of his malady, as it played out on Hole 15, is recounted for those who were not present. We all miss you Wiggins!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to Brad.

As a reminder, this fall’s Surgeon’s Cup is currently scheduled for October 17 and October 24. Dates may be subject to change based on the shortness of daylight currently being experienced as a result of global warming and the impending end of days (thanks to Al Gore who I was surprised to discover is of Mayan decent).

Duluth, GA USA (AP) – Another beautiful afternoon for Frisbee Golf and a bit of a surprise on the course as our league points race tightened up a bit.

Robby, our current league points leader, was admittedly well off his game this round while Sammy came blaring out of hibernation to score a season record setting -18 (only one stroke short of the course all time singles record, also held by him).

MaT, who started off his round with a drive that earned him the first “sewer rat” penalty of the season, just would not be able to overtake the Reaper as the round played out and Sammy demonstrated that he is very much “awake" by capping off the round with his first ACE of the season on eighteen.

The race for third took a nasty turn on nine as Wayne threw a perfect drive only to have it glance off of Robby’s drive and careen into the storm sewer for our second “sewer rat” medallion of the season.

As it would play out, Brad and Wayne would tie up third place on the Travis Trail and take three playoff holes before Wayne was able to edge Brad out of the tie.

In addition to Sammy’s season course record, there were a few other accomplishments achieved this afternoon which are worthy of note.

Brad, tied his best course round ever (-12), Wayne hit a season high (-12) and Dean, playing only his second singles round on the course, scored his best round at +3 which is 5 strokes better than his initial singles outing on August 29.

Since we had six players this night, we were not in a double point format which protected our leader during his most vulnerable of rounds. Tonight’s participation bumped up the APAR from 8 to 9 rounds which (in addition to tonight’s play) has tightened up the race a bit.

MaT is now only a half point behind Robby and Sammy has pulled to within two and a half points of the lead.

As mentioned earlier, we had two medallion awards (MaT and Wayne) this afternoon, both for the Sewer Rat Patrol. As such, it is appropriate at this point to express our gratitude to Brad for retrieving MaT’s throw from the storm sewer on hole one and, more importantly, for allowing Wayne to retrieve his own throw on hole nine, thereby alleviating any question as to that thrower’s manliness.

Duluth, GA USA (AP) – With a mere four rounds scheduled before the Fall Surgeon’s Cup, I thought it would be an interesting exercise to review some of the year to date NFGA league statistics.

Of course, it is always the coveted Surgeon’s Cup that this league revels around. And that is simple to follow and plays out with a couple of rounds in the summer and a couple of rounds in the fall.

But if you look at the league over the entire season, you see what makes this a stand-out kind of league.

Your typical triumvirate sits at the top of the league no matter how you want to slice and dice the statistics.

The “trio of trump” is separated by only four and a half points, first to third. And first and second are only separated by one and a half league points (who says playoff rounds aren’t important). Additionally, first and second are tied for total rounds won and are only two tenths of a point apart in the singles round average category.

The NFGA uses an All Player Average Rounds (APAR) format to determine the number of best rounds to include for calculating league points (Currently 8 rounds). It is important to note what scores make up each player’s APAR so, just to amplify the confusion, here they are for the top four players:

1. Robby 50.0 pts (8, 7, 7, 6, 6, 6, 5, 5)
2. MaT 48.5 pts (8, 7, 6, 6, 6, 6, 5, 4.5)
3. Sammy 45.5 pts (7, 6, 6, 6, 5.5, 5, 5, 5)
4. BOB 40.5 pts (7, 6, 5.5, 5, 5, 4, 4, 4)

What this means is that for any of these four players to increase their league points, they would need to score better than their bubble (lowest) point in order to knock that number out of their best eight rounds.

So, in order to make the rest of the season a bit more interesting, a double points format will be used for the rest of the season. For any round consisting of five players or less, we will double the league points for those rounds.

In that way, the remaining rounds will hold a bit more significance for the league leaders and hopefully make the rounds more interesting, regardless of turnout.

And, with a total of six rounds remaining (4 regular and 2 Cup) it should make for an interesting finish as we find out, once again, whether anyone can own both the CUP and the League?

And speaking of owning both the Cup and the league; rumor has it that Target Corporation (TGT:NYSE) is once again pursuing a sponsorship arrangement with MaT, our current Cup holder and last year’s League Winner, who’s contract with Trojan Brands entered option stage on September 1. Look for this player to step it up and once again, nominate himself as the one to beat as we run down to the 2012 NFGA season League and Cup championship.

So, as we go into the last rounds of the season, we have to ask:

Can Robby hold on to his essence of a lead?

Will Sammy awaken from his sleepiest season to date?

Will BOB find it within his schedule to make a round or two?

And finally, who might be lurking just behind the top four players, waiting to make a run for some double point shenanigans?

With another resounding 12 meter double eagle on hole seventeen, Robby would bring his team to within a stroke of Wayne and Sammy. While he and MaT would take their best shots at eighteen, they would still finish a stroke short of Sammy and Wayne who won the round at -18. Brad and Dean rounded out the group at -5.

Seven players would play tonight and witness one of the leagues’ biggest, late round meltdowns in history. And yes, the melt started on the infamous Travis Trail. But first let’s talk about the start of the round.

Sammy would lead off with the only birdie on the first hole while everyone else would par. Hole two would have significance for two players. Brad decided to go mud bogging just past the hole while Wayne hit his first of what would be eight consecutive birdies.

Robby was off on three and four; and even though he was given a bath on two, Brad was having trouble finding the handle early in the round. MaT, Travis and Dean seemed to be on their games at this point in the round.

Wayne followed up his eight birds with a back door eagle on 10 and another bird on 11. If you are doing the math, the group is now on the tee for 12 and Wayne is -11 which was equal to his personal best round for the season.

With the Par 5 “frequent eagle” hole 13 and the Par 6 “lofty and forgiving” hole 17 in front of him, “Birdie Boy” was on track to break both his season and all time (-17) course records.

At this point, the skies began to weep and the magic was washed from his disc. Missing only his second fairway of the round, Wayne put his drive short and right into a tree but still finished with a par.

He hit thirteen with a bird to put him at -12 and the group (with claims as high as -9) did not seem far behind, especially given the history of the Trail and its preponderance to change the game.

Fourteen would see some decent drives but as the rains started to increase the fairway became a stranger to most drives and even a few second throws.

Birdie Boy was now stuck on par for the next three holes while some of the boys started to take strokes off his lead. Missing the fairway on 15 and 16, Birdie Boy was barely holding on to par. With the “lofty and forgiving” Par 6 hole 17 in front of him, a new personal record and round win still seemed within reach.

Birdie Boy teed off on 17 and went off fairway right leaving himself with only a chip shot back onto the fairway. He chipped it left and off the fairway but redeemed himself with a decent third landing in the fairway some 17 meters from the hole. Laying up for an easy birdie, Birdie Boy was confident he would be setting a new season personal best and a win for the round.

But, have you ever heard of Three Mile Island or Chernobyl? Both are now being considered as new names for the “lofty and forgiving” hole 17.

Birdie Boy missed his birdie putt of 3 meters and then tried a “drop over the top” putt from a couple of meters behind the hole. Missing the drop, his disc fell to the ground and rolled downhill, and behind the hole, another meter or so. From there, he tried another drop over the top only to end up behind the hole again. Finally, he tossed a lay up in front of the hole and holed out at for a triple bogey.

Now, no one can say that a triple B is the record for the hole since the NFGA uses an honor system and does not record hole by hole scores other than for Cup rounds. But, in any case, this can, and should, go down as one of the, if not the most, memorable meltdown in course history. And with that, we should consider a new credo for the league in that each hole should be named in honor of that hole’s most memorable moment.

So, I put forward, in this round of August 29, 2012, that hole 17, from this moment forward, be known as Chernobyl.

Losing the round and finishing in a tie for third, Wayne should also seek a new sponsor. Suggestions are welcome and should be brought to next week’s round by anyone who has any sense of wit. To be honest, I expect maybe one suggestion at most, and that will likely come from Wayne himself.

New medallions were awarded to Wayne for a Postal Service on 6 and MaT for a Dish Network on 9.

Six golfers turned out for the season’s fourth round of doubles in what would be one of the most exciting finishes in memorable NFGA history. A season doubles’ record of -21 would be set between two teams who would have to play two playoff holes to settle the round.

We pick up the action on the tee for Hole 17 with the team of Sammy and Wayne at -17 leading Robby and Brad by a stroke. All four players threw nice drives giving no apparent advantage to either team.

Wayne then threw first; and promptly sliced his second shot some 6 meters up into a tree 10 meters off the right of the fairway; and there it stayed. Luckily for the team, Sammy (who had been carrying Wayne through most of the round) threw his second shot onto the left side of the fairway and about 10 meters from the hole.

Robby and Brad found themselves 15 meters out and in the fairway right side. While Sammy and Wayne attempted to retrieve Wayne’s disc from the tree, the familiar metallic whack of a hit resounded across the course. Robby had hit a double eagle from their lie to put the pressure on the leading team.

After his disc was retrieved, Wayne attempted to discuss strategy with Sammy who instead, went into some kind of a trance and threw his disc into the face of the hole for an unbelievable answer to Robby’s double! Wow! The lead team kept their one stroke advantage as the group headed for the final hole.

Robby threw first and left his team with an easy bird. Next up, Brad let loose a shot that left no doubt; RADAR WAS ON! With a couple of skips on the fairway; bingo-bango and it was an ace! It was Brad’s first of the season and his first recorded on this course! The gallery went crazy at this point and had to be corralled by league officials before the game could resume. Next up, both Sammy and Wayne hit birds leading to a playoff scenario.

On the first playoff hole, Brad went long and Robby went short, while both Wayne and Sammy had the distance but were on either side of the hole. Both teams then hit birdies on what was an uneventful first playoff hole.

On the second hole however, Robby led the group off with, of all things, another ace! Sammy and Wayne both came close but there was just not enough left to thwart the momentum that was sparked by the double eagle and aces both Robby and Brad were able to muster late in the round.

Congratulations to both Brad and Robby for a great round and well deserved victory.

MaT and Dean finished in third at -11.

With that, the all time recorded course doubles record still stands at -21 (though now in a three way tie) as originally set by the team of Sammy and Frito on April 20, 2011. And Brad joins the exclusive Ace Hole club as its fourth all time member.

And for the record, the singles season course record stands at -16 as held by MaT while the all time recorded singles course record is -19 as set by Sammy on June 8, 2011.

The League APAR still remains at 8.

At twelve under, the playoff only went to a single hole as Brad went long and Robby went short. Finding himself blocked by the shule behind the first playoff hole, Brad was not able to convert while Robby hit his second shot to take the round.

It was a medallion free night though two Bs met up with Bridgestone/Firestone on holes 12 and 13.

The League APAR remains at 8.

My apologies for the delay in this post. I cite the holiday as my excuse!

The Summer Rounds are in the books.

It was hot and muggy as the field of six teed off on the second round that would determine who would shelf the Cup for the rest of the summer. Three players (MaT, BOB and Wayne) would vie for the Cup while three others (Robby, Sammy and Brad) would play an exhibition round.

Going into the round, MaT was up a stroke over BOB and Wayne with Travis back five strokes. With Travis unable to make the second round, there would only be three possibilities for shelving the Cup for the rest of the summer and into the fall.

With the stroke lead going into the second round, MaT would stave off any charge BOB was able to muster. While BOB made a gallant charge, MaT was able to hold him off and add a couple of strokes to the differential by the end of the round. Wayne was five strokes back at the turn and out of the hunt by the start of the Travis Trail.

Winning the combined Cup rounds by 3 strokes; this is MaT’s unprecedented third Surgeon’s Cup, making him the most successful Cup winner in recorded league history. Sammy, with two wins to his credit, is the only other league member who has a chance to tie this remarkable statistic this season.

League scoring will include an additional bonus point posting for the final finishing positions as follows:

1st MaT +6
2nd BOB +4
3rd Wayne +2

The NFGA Surgeon’s Cup Summer Round One was played on the afternoon of June 20 and what a round it was.

Even with two of the league’s top players not making the cut, the competition was still fierce, and as expected, came down to the Travis Trail to finish it off.

The four players making the cut for the summer round were the current Cup holder MaT, BOB, Travis and Wayne.

MaT took an early lead on the first hole but Wayne kicked it up and at five under was up by a stroke over MaT, two over BOB and three over Travis by the turn.

BOB started to press on ten with an eagle but Wayne kept the lead until his patented missed putting technique started to plague him on thirteen which led to a three way tie for the lead with Wayne, BOB and MaT at eight under par. Travis parred thirteen leaving him at four under.

Wayne, BOB and Travis followed that up with pars on fourteen while MaT started his attack with a well placed second shot to hit a bird.

Moving to the uphill fifteen, Travis hit his first bogey on the first hole of the Trail named in his honor. Both BOB and Wayne took par while MaT struck another bird.

Sixteen was again parred by Wayne, BOB and Travis while MaT took yet another bird to give him a three stroke lead going into the most forgiving hole on the course, known as LF17 (Lofty and Forgiving Seventeen).

Travis birdied the par 6 while both Wayne and BOB hit the regulatory eagles. MaT, on the other hand, pitched his third shot a bit past the hole and too far to the left. Missing his fourth shot, he landed behind the hole and had to then toss a lay up to finish at par.

All players hit birdies on eighteen finishing the first round of the Summer Surgeon’s Cup as follows:

1 MaT -12
3 BOB -11
3 Wayne -11
4 Travis - 5

Additional medallions were picked up this round with MaT earning a Postal Service on 8 and Travis picking up an Automobile Association on 17.

Based on this round's participation the APAR has moved to 7.

The second round of the Summer Surgeon’s Cup will be played on the Old Peachtree Walk course next Wednesday, June 27 at 6:00.

MaT brought his ‘A’ game this afternoon and crushed the season best round record with a stellar -16 to beat the previous -15 as shared by Sammy and Robby. An additional fourteen, a thirteen, a couple of elevens, a nine and an eight rounded out the good showing for seven players. Both MaT and Wayne hit their season’s best tonight as the group moves closer to the first Surgeon’s Cup rounds!

A few medallions were tagged this night picked up by MaT with an Automobile ‘glance’ on 12 while Travis added to his medallion lead by picking up both an Automobile Association on 5 and a Postal Service on 12.

Wayne hit his second Ace in a row on 18 collecting another pool of $5.

It was tabled, seconded and approved to weight the point structure for the Surgeon’s Cup Rounds on June 20 and June 27.

Therefore, if there are 8 players for the first round, the points will be doubled to 16 points applied to the first place finisher, 14 for the second, 12 for third and so forth. The second round will be scored the same way.

Then, both rounds will be compiled and if a player, by virtue of both his first and second round stroke scores finishes in first place; he will be awarded an additional 16 points for the combined first place finish. The combined second place finisher will receive an additional 14 points and so on down the line.

This system will allow the two round finishers for the Cup rounds to enjoy the added incentive of a weighted points system for their League Overall standing.

Based on tonight’s participation, the league All Player Average Rounds (APAR) remains at 6.

Next week (June 13) will be the last round for tuning up your game before the first Cup round on June 20!

Krask was ‘bask’ and took the round after a three hole playoff with Sammy; bringing him to 2 ½ points of the league leading Robby who missed this day’s round. In addition BOB picked up his first medallion of the season with an Automobile Association membership strike on 11.

Wayne hit the second ace of the season on 18 to finish one stroke behind the duo while Travis rounded out the foursome.

With today’s light participation, the season APAR remains at six (6) rounds.

Neither Sammy nor Travis can make next week’s round. Does anyone want to consider playing a “field trip” round at Alexander in lieu of the Peachtree Walk Course?

After a full day of intermittent showers, the weather cleared nicely for this afternoon’s tee time.

Sammy was on from the start and won the round with a season record matching -15. Robby kept it interesting by staying a couple of strokes back throughout the round while MaT and Wayne battled for a distant third.

Three membership medallions were awarded this night:
Hole 8 - Sammy picked up a postal service
Hole 9 – Travis picked up a camper
Hole 13 - Travis added his second postal service of the season giving him the overall medallion season lead with a total of five so far! For those who keep track of such things, Travis finished second in this category last season with a total of six (6) medallions. Who can remember who placed first last season?

With tonight’s rounds the APAR remains at 5.

Seven players were out for one of the most competitive rounds of the season. As the group teed it up on 16 there were three players tied for the lead and two only a stroke behind. Wayne and Kyle were there too.

Not much changed through 17 where several long shots were holed including a thundering 41.3m hammer by Kyle from the right side fringe.

Travis had his best round of the season shooting a -11 for the night.

With tonight's participation, the APAR moved to 5 rounds.

Sammy finished third and Wayne fourth while Travis played a shortened “exhibition” round to play out the evening.

A couple of club membership medallions were awarded to Sammy who collected a Postal Service click on six and Travis who hit a first throw Automobile Association click on seven.

Some discussion was heard relative to a future post round gathering at El Porton but nothing was confirmed.

A motion was made, seconded and approved to use the All Player Average Round (APAR) method of scoring for the Overall League points. As such, the current Overall League scoring reflects the best four (4) rounds for each player.

The Ace Pool rolled over to $54US as none were hit this evening.

Robby was back and took the round by one stroke over MaT. And once again, the Travis Trail provided us with a few chances to change the outcome but no one could out stay the perseverance of Mr. Morgan.

Wayne joined the Postal Service with a light but qualifying tap on his way to a bogey on eight and Sammy tagged a car (or is it a storage building) on fourteen.

On eighteen, Wayne left his drive about 6 inches short of an ace so the pool has rolled over once again. Who will tag the first ace of the season?

Kevin joined us again to make it a nice five-some for the round.

Eight players came out to play on this great evening for Frisbee Golf.

Robby brought it on with a game that left everyone chasing from the start. For the record, he finished at -15 only 3 strokes off his course best. BOB gave him a run and finished two strokes behind at -13 which tied his best ever for the course, as set in 2010. I don’t know about the rest of you, but BOB (who only made 5 rounds last season) should be considered a serious threat coming out of the chute with this kind of performance after such a long hiatus.

Last season’s League and Surgeon’s Cup holder, MaT, was in the game but fell a stroke behind BOB to finish in third, while Wayne (keeping with his moniker of Mr. Mediocrity) played in the middle of the pack hitting his all time average of -9 (this after a scoring correction when he errantly scored hole 10 as if it were a par 3). “I am just glad no one pushed us to sign the scorecard this night,” he was heard to mumble.

Where in the world was Sammy Jackson? “Up and to the left, up and to the left!” Oh wait, that was in a movie or something. But, Sammy seemed to be going too much to one side during most of his round. It never seemed to correct itself and his game, at -6, was quite off from his typical performance.

Travis was there.

We also want to welcome a new player to the group. Justin Holzer came out for his first round of Frisbee Golf – NFGA style. Adapting his disc golf style to the game of Frisbee golf presented a few challenges that (if you were watching) were being seriously and successfully worked on as the round progressed. And then he learned not to take the hapless par 6 on hole 17 so lightly! Look for Justin to be a player who both challenges and contributes to the spirit of the NFGA.

And talk about a hiatus; anyone who was out for this round was “graced” by the presence of the Schneidmeister who came out firing but fizzled a bit and fell off his game after taking a few cell phone calls during early play. We hope to see both BOB and Schneidmeister more this season.

Obviously missing from Wednesday’s round was the display of any sponsorship or endorsement media. This leads us to wonder if some of the players may be negotiating new endorsements for the new season. I guess we will find out as the season progresses as most sponsors, in this economy, probably want to see some consistent performance before they put their names out on a player.

• Sammy and BOB took second after a three round play off at -15
• Robby and Justin finished third, also at -15
• There were some very close aces on 18 but no one hit; so the pool rolled over
• There were a couple of rules discussions during the night’s round
a. What is considered a player’s lie was brought up and the rule, as stated on the original NFGA Facebook web “page” stated as follows:
i. “Play the Frisbee as it lies! Players are allowed to make as many steps to gain momentum and power as long as they do not pass the Tee box, or their current lie. Players may take one step with a pivot foot on the original lie to avoid hazards.”
ii. So what does this mean?
1. Many times it has been demonstrated that a player (primarily during a putt) can place his/her back foot on the lie and jump or pivot on their front foot (which may be closer to the hole) to make a shot
2. This seems to conflict with the rule as stated in (i) above
3. We need to clarify whether or not a player, at any time, may place either foot closer to the hole than their lie
4. In the much regulated sport of Disc Golf, no shot can be made with a foot any closer to the hole than the previous lie which seems to be what was intended by the original rule for NFGA play
5. Take this to the game of ball golf and maybe you would see players moving their ball a club length closer to the hole before making a putt
b. There was also a discussion as to changing the doubles format to an alternating throw scenario
i. Since most of us can’t even stay up with our scores, it will be interesting to see what ideas come up with a way to keep up with who throws next
ii. The additional discussion on the course was confusing; so if anyone has an idea as to how to better play our doubles rounds please voice your opinion, in detail and let’s get on with a discussion

Here we were with seven players in a field of pollen that would skid our discs further down the street than any other time in the young season thus far.

The yellow contrails behind our Bees and the ongoing sound of them sliding on past our views would make this a night that may play out to be different than any night that may follow.

In any case, Sammy is back. Taking the round with a -14, he has redeemed himself from his hapless start last week of -6 and now holds a third place position in the overall league standings; only three (3) points behind last week’s winner, Robby who finished tonight with a respectable -12 and still holds the league lead over BOB by a mere two points!

Our boy, BOB brings it in at -11 keeping his Bolshevik challenge alive to stay in the game and on the leader board holding on to an overall second place after two rounds. We still need to look out for this guy!

Coughlin, was again off his game, but held on to the fourth league position after the round. It seems like we have seen this kind of start from this player in the past. Stay tuned for a radical change in this guy’s play.

Travis came apart on his own Trail and fell behind Russell in the overall standings while Holzer continued to find the adaption to Frisbee Golf somewhat more of a challenge than he anticipated.
