I played the White tees and shot 2 under my first time. And that was with a circle 5 lost disc on 11. I could birdy 16 of the 18 holes, maybe all 18. So it is on the short side. But I love it. Still has lots of challenges. Flat. Lots of trees. Clear fairways. Natural Tee pads with colored cylinders like ball golf. It had rained a lot two days before. My wife thought certain areas were too muddy, but I thought it was fine. Great flow. Start on a big open hole in the back yard, then the rest in woods, and finish right by the front yard. Joe & his family are super friendly. You can see the hard work and Love on the course. Thank you!

Hemingway once wrote, “Now is no time to think of what you do not have. Think of what you can do with what there is.”

Joe Johnson and his family did exactly that by converting the dense woods on their property into the most wonderful, artistic, disc golf courses I have ever played.

Never have I seen a course that bares the soul of its creators. You will find exquisite lines & technical designs, metal artwork In the trees, stone creations on the ground and wood structured accents dressing the baskets.

Hemingway would say, “If you are lucky enough to have played at the Road Apple, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for the Road Apple disc course is a movable feast.

Great course with enough variety to keep me entertained. I will definitely be going back through, trying each set of tees. The variation seems to switch up the individual hole layout keeping it fresh - not just simply changing the distance to the basket. Would recommend that anyone within driving distance checks this course out.

I feel I need to leave this review in response to Tim Kramer’s review. The course has improved over the last year Immensely with new baskets and fixed tee pads. I must also say the course is a work in progress that Joe has spent many tireless hours working mostly by himself. Tim hasn’t played here in a very long time (taking a guess 9 months) so for him to write a review of a course he refuses to play is inappropriate and inaccurate. His review is a vendetta against Joe, myself and Lake Erie Disc Golf Club. This course is worth a trip to play very technical with some open shots as well. The mud situation is being improved by the day with the delivery of more fill dirt to fill in the muddy spots and more drainage has been dug recently to also combat the mud. I give this an A since the mud is still being fixed and the rest of the new baskets need to be placed. Hope to see you out here.

As far as a home/private course goes this is a good course but does not come close to stacking up to the true A+ championship level courses like Moraine and Deer Lakes. The course is always wet and muddy unless there is A LOT of dry weather. It's mostly in the woods and lacks variety. Some of the tee and basket locations are very questionable. As an experienced disc golfer that has played a good amount of great courses I can't give this course better then a C.

Road Apple is fun woods golf. A variety of long and short par threes and a few challenging fours offer tight lines that snake through the forest and over fields that lead to the signature hole ten. Throw a laser beam across the shallow ravine with a low ceiling and you can get there in one, but playing for three is smarter. Creativity pays off here with opportunities for amazing lines that don't always seem so obvious. It gets muddy if there's been any recent rain so bring your boots

This course gets better every time I'm there. For my first visit, I barely knew the people in my own club just a year ago. The Lake Erie Disc Golf club's first fundraiser tourney was the debut of the front 9 to many people attending for their first visit as well. By the turn of the year, the back 9 was in. I've since gotten closer with people in the local community, in particular the Orton/Johnson family and the community they are building around them and this fabulous course. I admit I've had a hand in helping to make this course what it is. I recently attended my first work day there, and I got some other friends to pitch in and help. With the guidance of Ruth Orton, we all set to work weedwhacking, pruning, chopping, digging and more. With an improved walkway at the hole 10 "ravine", including some ingenious step building by a couple other club members, and a vastly improved log bridge, the safe travel down the muddy slope and across the stream is much better.
As summer dries the course out a little, there are plans to make improvements to the tees, and fix up more of the paths between holes. In the meantime, don't forget your boots, because this is not a course for people who don't like a little mud and nature in their lives!! B+ for the course, A+ for the experience!
**Edit: The summer has been deeply productive as the season has progressed. Tee pads have improved massively, new lines through the trees have emerged, signs have been posted, directional arrows on trails and paths have been placed, continuous upgrades have made this the best course in the area. I would venture to say that this is far and away the best crafted, and most technical, adventurous disc golf course in Erie County. There aren't many courses in this little corner of Pennsylvania, but as the sport grows here, any new courses, are going to have stiff competition trying to reach this level. I changed my rating from a previous B+, to A+. I love this course!

This course has a variety of different shot options from hole to hole. There will be a back 9 hole coming this spring and I am really looking forward to that. The front 9 is mostly lefty friendly, with the additional back 9 I think it will provide an even difficulty for both righty and lefty players.

Lots of variety throughout requiring all different shots. The three tee locations on each hole give totally new looks and require different shots. Come check it out!
