This course is perfect for the beginner. Its not a technical course and will allow the beginner of all ages to get a grasp for the game. I've seen worse courses, the city of St. George keeps this park up. The bathrooms are clean, the environment is safe and the tees well they're the sidewalk. The baskets are in good condition. My kids enjoy throwing their discs here and playing on the park playground.

Course: Mathis Park DGC in St. George, Utah

Perspective: Intermediate level, Master�s 60+ player with low to intermediate arm strength.

Course Details/Info:
�Course plays around the periphery of Mathis Park.
�There are only 9 pins but some players who are there often have developed 18 different tee boxes locations to add interest.
�A paved walking path borders most of the moderately wooded course.
�The 1st tee box is at a corner of the large parking lot where it abuts a huge vacant lot.
�Course is organized in a somewhat serpentine manner for first 3 holes (curves left for #1 and #2, then plays back toward pavilion for #3. The rest plays counter-clockwise around the larger oval park component paralleling the walking path, starting with #4 beyond the playground.

Challenges/Pros:
�Tightly positioned bushy trees increase difficulty on many holes.
�A relatively short course but quite technical with short to intermediate length tunnel shots at many holes.
�Mandatories also add difficulty.
�Good mixture of holes favoring forehand and others backhand plus I found rollers to be useful at some holes.
�Ample opportunities for birdies with accurate shots.
�There are only 9 pins but some players who are there often have developed 18 different tee boxes locations to add interest.

Opportunities for Improvement:
�Most tee boxes are natural on grass with others on dirt. One is cement and the rest would greatly benefit from replacement by cement pads.
�Signage is fair from the tee boxes with Hole # and direction to play on vertical signs.
�Unfortunately, vandals have removed some signs and a number of �mando� arrows, particularly those previously on trees, that really makes understanding the course more difficult. The city should address this problem as the course is very popular and draws quite a few tourists.

Summary of Rating/Play:
�Very appropriate for Masters 50-60+, beginning to intermediate adults or younger players particularly if one wants to work on curving drives, tight fairway drives, approach shots, and putting.
�Also good for anyone who enjoys more technical courses.
�Overall, I would rate this as a B- course if you play it knowing all the "mandos", etc.

Good course for mid-range and putting practice. This course has very nice baskets.

If you are an advanced player, you probably don't need to bring a distance driver with you to this course. However when the park is not busy, you can make up your own holes to get some power drives in (such as playing from 6 to 9 or 7 to 2). Nathan with the local disc golf club changed the tee locations slightly and added some mandatories and OB's that you can follow to make the course more technical and challenging.

Most holes are 200 ft or less and the course is often populated with soccer players having practice, children on the playground equipment, and walkers on the bike path. Make sure to call out "Fore" when necessary.

This is a great course for some beginning players. Very short course overall and for anyone that has played a bit, you'll only need a putter for this course. Some holes provide an opportunity for a fun hyzer spike if you want to practice some of those, but even at that, all of the holes on this 9 hole course are very short. The course plays through a well groomed park with grass for all holes.

With all the amazing terrain and views in Saint George, it makes me wonder why there is not a world class disc golf course here!

Hole 1 - Starts at the south west end of the parking lot near the fence. This shot has some low hanging trees off the tee so be careful not to get tangled up in them. Basket is ahead and just slightly off to the left.

Hole 2 - Nice and straight. Probably one of the longer holes on this course. Open with plenty of room.

Hole 3 - Fun hole with trees overhanging the entire hole. Keep the throw low and straight. Good hole for a flick or just keep it straight.

Hole 4 & 5 - Both of these holes are similar in that you'll have some trees blocking your path and likely best path is to throw out and finish with a little fade left.

Hole 6 - Straight ahead and one of the other longer holes you'll play here.

Hole 7 - This one is best played with a flick or a nice annie throw that will hold a line to come back right a little.

Hole 8 - Short and straight.

Hole 9 - Trees lining your right hand side and a tree just left of the basket. A nice straight shot will lay up nice here on the hillside next to the basket.

It's the only course in St. George so it's better than nothing. It's not laid out well and tends to get boring. You are often competing to use the grass with soccer. Try Dixie State University campus with they have their baskets out during the school year. It's better than Mathis park. St George needs to do better in this area.

I guess it's decent for a first attempt for a course in st. george, but there are so many sick pieces of land out there that could make a great course. this ones at a small park with very few technical shots. only the first three holes are marked, and the last 6 are around the border of a pretty flat, square field. I kind of felt like it was a waste of great baskets(discatcher pro's). It makes me realize just how great my home course(riverpark) is.
Come on St. George. step up your game : )
