Update

Just letting you know this club is still alive. Due to graduation I had to step down as the club president and it's now being run by Denny, he does keep up the facebook page from time to time, but seems he doesn't get to DiscgolfScene.com with his updates. To keep up to date it's best you friend/like Disc Knights on Facebook.

Changes at UCF Disc Knights

As many of you know I've acted as the club's president this past year and done what I could to see this club progress, in that time we've build up new members, gotten more people into the sport, improved the course, and throw on a regular basis as a group.

As many of you know I've acted as the club's president this past year and done what I could to see this club progress, in that time we've build up new members, gotten more people into the sport, improved the course, and throw on a regular basis as a group.

I, however; regrettably will have to step down as the club president. Per UCF policy club officers must be students of UCF which coming end of the semester my time with UCF on an official level is over. With this in mind I've given Jake and Denny the ability to run the Facebook page, and Jake the ability to run our Disc Golf Scene page.

I plan to remain involved in the club on an actively level and still promote it as well as throw with the group as possible, however; with my new job I won't know my schedule for a while so I can't make promises on the weekly throws.

Best of wishes to all my fellow Disc Knights, and best of luck with the club on the official end of things.

As an additional note with the changes in hours until the spring we might need to shift the time of our weekly throw. At this point sunset comes at 5:30pm which is when we are scheduled to start. We might consider making the weekly throw occur during the weekend until spring. It's something we should discuss when possible.

Weekly throw, Wednesday throwers?

As always Friday at 5:30pm is our weekly throw here at UCF, also I've heard there is a group of about 4 throwers that come out on Wednesdays around 4:30 - 5pm. I've been unable to confirm this as I work at that time, but if anyone is interested in looking into it, it's what I've heard. (No promises, this is second hand information)

Turkey Lake on 10/2

For those interested Turkey Lake is actually holding a "Handicap" competition on 10/2 so instead of attempting to throw around this, I say we just jump in (best way to learn is to throw with someone who's more experienced) Entry fee is 7$ to non ODGC members, 5$ for ODGC members. Tee off is at 10:30am SHARP! you'll want to be there no later then 10am. See you there!

Weekly throw reminder, Turkey Lake 10/2?

Don't forget Friday 5:30pm is our weekly throw, anyone have any input on throwing at turkey lake on the 2nd? I've not gotten a single recommendation for times.

Weekly throw reminder, Turkey Lake 10/2?

Disc golf at UCF on Friday (5:30pm) We've also had some requests to go to Turkey Lake as a group. I'm tentatively thinking October 2nd we go hit Turkey Lake as a group (play T1 then T2) What time would people prefer? Morning, Afternoon, or Evening? (edited corrected the date toe 10/2 i.e. Saturday)

Maintenance and Weekly throw reminder

Just a reminder, those who would like to help we'll be doing a quick clean up of the course tomorrow (Friday 9/17/2010) at 8am. It'll be mostly week whacking and usually takes less then an hour to do all 9 holes.

Otherwise 5:30pm we will have our weekly throw. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Sports Club Council meetings, flier to post locally.

I've managed to get us into one of UCF's sports council meetings (Oct 13th Evening) I'm looking for a second person to represent us there. Basically we'll explain who we are and let the other clubs know how to get in touch, this would really help get our name out there.

Also I've designed a flier that goes over basically what Disc Knights is and how to get in touch with us, if you're visiting any of the other local courses bring a copy with you, see if they'll let you post it by the course. We're only one - two people short on my last tally from being able to be official.

Friday Course Maintenance, weekly throw

Anyone interested in helping with course maintenance we will be doing a quick run through clearing around baskets/tees (weed whacking) any help would be nice we do this bright and early in the morning on Friday (8am)

Otherwise doing the usual throw at 5:30pm on UCF's course. (I personally won't be able to make it this week so if we want scores kept someone will need to take them.)

Learn Disc Golf @ UCF was a little discouraging, we had fun but the turn out was pretty disappointing, hopefully when we do it again next semester we'll be able to better advertise it.

Friday, Course Maintenance, Learn Disc Golf @ UCF, and weekly throw.

For those interested we will be doing course maintenance Friday morning bright and early. (Primarily just weed whacking around tees and baskets)

At 11am we will be holding the "Learn Disc Golf @ UCF" Event until 2ish

At 5:30pm we will be doing our normal Friday Throw.

there is also a good chance we'll throw a second around after 2pm to fill time until 5:30pm for those who want to stay.

Throwing tonight 5:30pm(ish) a new member will be there too.

Just a reminder we are throwing at 5:30pm tonight (not 6pm) We're trying this time out as people seemed to like it more (and it gives us a better shot at a full game when winter rolls around and it gets dark at 7pm) As an added bonus, we've got a knew thrower joining us this week :)

Learn Disc Golf @ UCF

For anyone with friends who might want to learn Disc golf. We're holding an event on August 27th 11am to 2pm(ish) to teach interested students the rules, how to play, basic throws, etc of Disc golf. Disc Knights are encouraged to attend as either guests wanting to learn, or to help actually run the event.

The event is open to all UCF students and Alumni, so tell your friends.

UCF's Intramural Sports is asking us to try and get some "action shots" of us playing on the campus course to promote it, so if anyone has any good pictures of people playing discgolf that don't mind sharing please post them here or send them to me and I'll pass them on to our contact in IM.

Throwing on Friday 6pm (I expect this to be a regular thing)

Should weather permit plans are in order to throw at UCF on Friday at 6(ish)pm. Last Friday turn out wasn't too bad considering there was a storm threating to dump on us at a moments notice (never did) The good news was we didn't lose any discs and in fact found 3 discs (two which were previously lost by throwers who came with us, one was unmarked) The bad news is we all were throwing pretty sloppy.

We met with UCF's Landscape & Natural Resources Land Manager, Alaina. Here's a quick review:

-We will try and help maintain the course
-We will hold 1 - 2 "learn Disc golf" events a semester
-One or Two "practice" baskets are being added
-Maps will have postings for trash can locations
-Potentially "Next Tee" signs will be added
-Eventually Tees might be pulled up and leveled before replacing them.
-Hole 8 will likely have it's basket (ma ... more

-Practice/alternative holes maybe added to the course. These holes would either act as alternate holes IE 8a/8b or just a hole that is there for fun.
-The area around basket 3 will likely have a few feet cleared in all directions.
-Controlled burns will increase lane width over time.
-1 and 2's "wall of vegetation" will continue to grow to reduce lost discs

Competition Results

Official results for the 2010 UCF discgolf competition. Eric Fisher and Jake Gibbs tied for first at +7, followed by Thomas Barrett at +10. The official win goes to Jake via a coin toss as the decided tie breaker (Thrown by Dan as a third party) The club has also collect 4 new members! An all around win in my book.

Competition update

Just an update for those who didn't get registered but would like to drop by to check it out UCF will have their competition at the UCF course tomorrow 7/23/10. It will start bright and early at 9:30am at the Pavilion by the course. I'm not sure if the course will be closed to the public while the competition is proceeding, worst case I'm sure they'd let you tag along as spectators, or throw one hole behind us. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Good news! We have a voice!

This morning we had a rather pleasant conversation with the officials in charge of what happens to our course in response to the changes made recently. This coming week we'll be walking the course with them discussing improvements that could be made to benefit both parties. In addition to this we've also learned some of their future plans for the course and missing baskets.

(Which I was very impressed by a few ideas, especially in regards to promoting the sport and teaching new play ... more

Competition at UCF's New Course

UCF has announced a competition will be held at it's new course on 7/23/10 Non students must pay 50$ to play no time provided "Further details will be provided by email closer to date"

Sign up is due by the end of 7/20/10 (very short notice) You'll need to hunt for it on UCF's website as my link didn't work. just search for UCF Disc Golf course and look for it under the first few webpages on google that are ucf.edu sites.

UCF course make over

For those of you who have not heard or scene UCF has redone it's 18 hole course into a 9 hole course. Overall it's probably more a positive then a negative change.

-Now only 9 holes
-3 holes with water in play
-3 holes with road in play
-3 holes "in the palm"
-Greatly reduced chances of losing discs
-Great for beginners, experienced players may find the course lacks variety

Disc Knights on Facebook

I've added a Disc Knights page to facebook for the non-discgolfscene players.

In addition to this the team now has an advisor, officers, and just needs members to join the team. To officially join please contact me and provide your first name, last name, and PID. I need a total of 12 signatures before I can submit the paperwork.

Advisor Found

It appears we've found an advisor so now it's just a matter of collecting the proper signatures (advisor, president, another officer) and submitting the papers for the club to be official.

Charter Accepted

Our charter was accepted a lot sooner then expect, however; our planned advisor is retiring so we are looking for a new advisor to finalize our registration. Once this is done Disc Knights is official.

Disc Knights Approved as OSI club with UCF

The OSI club application was approved today, The charter has been submitted, once that is registered and accepted Disc Knights will be an official OSI club of UCF and then officially UCF's Disc Golf club.

Disc Knight's Maiden Throw

Thanks to everyone who came out for our first official event as Disc Knights. (Disc Knight's Maiden Throw) We all had a great deal of fun despite the course being a little flooded, and having to call it an early day due to thunder storms. While less then expected turned out, it was still a nice group, I look forward to many such events in the future.

Application for OSI Approval submitted with UCF

UCF Disc Knights has officially filed an application with UCF's Office of Student Involvement to make the club an official club on UCF campus. (Thought officially we'll be named "Disc Knights" due to UCF Policies restricting the use of the UCF tag)

In addition to this we're currently working on our website which we'll post a link as soon as it's up and running, as well as an official logo for our club. (Currently we're just using a standard knights logo, and I'd like something unique to our club)

The University of Central Florida has had it's own disc golf course for several years now. In light of it's recent increase popularity I felt it best to found a UCF Disc Golf club. This Club would both play and compete activily as well as raise awareness of disc golf and the UCF course among the student body here at UCF.

This Club would both play and compete activily as well as raise awareness of disc golf and the UCF course among the student body here at UCF.

Immediate priorities in the club is to raise awareness of both the club and the disc golf at UCF, as well as to begin pressuring the UCF administration to either fulfill their intial promise to allow us to convert the course to a "Florida grassland" instead of the sea of palm, or relocate the course to a different location on campus. (Marshal, UCF's course pro mentioned previously attempting to request to move the course to the West side of campus, however; the request was rejected at that time)

So lets Armor Up, and rip out some discs. I look forward to seeing you at UCF's disc golf course. Bring your friends! (We do not have any events scheduled yet, however; soon (tm) we will start scheduling weekend events for those interested.
