Annual Meeting 2017

Reminder of NEODGA Annual Meeting on November 11th @ Sunny Lakes DGC in Aurora Ohio. Following the meeting there is a Scramble on the Gold Course. Details on tournament page. If weather is poor the meeting will be moved to the Mason Jar Restaurant in Aurora, Ohio.

This year nominations will be taken for positions of Director, Director of Player Development, and Diector of Special Projects. Anyone interested contact Bill Flynn and/or Alex Colucci. Please do so by 11/05/17.

50+ Class Reunion KSU - Main - July 7-9

Age Restricted disc golfers.

This is a must attend event. There are various events around a C-tier two day event (one round per day)...Including field games, scrambles, glow throws, HAPPY HOURS! Everything is mix or match...do some do it all.. Just do it!

This is an inaugural event which will hopefully grow huge in time and be copied throughout the country. Be part of history.

End of the winter series

Yuge thanks to Ben for this aspect of our series, to Joel for taking over base camp prep as weather dictates (not just what these things add to the events/ series, but taking responsibility for them so I rarely even think of them, its sooooo nice!). And team Massillon, besides being very steady and reliable for their event, donated a lot of plastic, etc for CTPs and the final raffle. Finally, Borderline Discs and Buckeye Discs ended up being great partners merchandising some of these events, and providing professionalism and spectacle to our GLORIFIED Ice Bowls!

2017 Frozen Fingers Series Completed. Projects Awarded

All Season Disc Golfers,
The series is completed and awards were presented. Thanks to all TDs, organizers, and players. This was the biggest overall attendance ever. Payout structure was revised this year to lessen cost burden on hosting clubs and to jazz up player payout. Even with the changes big funds were raised to allow huge project support.

It was a competitive project cycle with many great project submissions.

ESP- Expanded Series Payout!

We are happy to announce that we are extending series pauouts in the bigger divisions- Open and Masters will pay out the top 4 and Rec and Intermediate will pay out the top 5 for the series. Also, we are adding about 40% to the series payout overall, which will be paid out at the Finale after the raffle! And don't forget about the RAFFLE!

Entry fees for each division stand at $20 per golfer. $10 of each entry goes towards that day’s payout, $8 will go to the “charity” (which is NEODGA, which goes back to the local clubs annually to fund worthy projects, traditionally at our spring meeting), $1 will go to the series payout of the top 3 of each division (AT the final event at Punderson State Park in late March!) and $1 will go to the host club to cover expenses and benefit local concerns. We now expect payouts to be cash for Open and Women only- all amateur divisions to be paid out in merchandise.

Committees / Program Managers: Committees or a Program Manager are recommended for major NEODGA initiatives. Initiatives may include but not limited to regional events series, multicourse leagues, disc golf promotional activities, programming, and/or NEODGA exclusive activities.

sorry, none this year. Couple folks showed interest, but having difficulty with yahoo, still haven't received all money from last year, trophy is gone, bad blood from folks that had technical difficulties last year or were unaware of rules or dues changes, somehow the fucking league team won, undermining a lot of confidence in the league, Im overwhelmed with everything else and burned my fucking dinner battling with yahoo. ANd i can't run league without playing in it. Sorry to the two of you who were still interested- hope you can find another league

Thursday night the PDGA had its annual awards dinner at Pro Worlds in Kansas and there were several locals of note on the list!! Val Jenkins (Doss) and Bill Griffith were both given awards as was J. Gary Dropcho from Pittsburgh. Well done all and keep up the spirit! As for one of our other favorite sons, go get em Socki Bomb!!!!

Frozen Fingers on the Fairway Fund Raiser Tour (FFFaRT)- 2016 Summary

It’s the most… wonderful time… of the year!

Just me? EVERYBODY should be thrilled that the frozen fingers series is over! It means spring is here, and more daylight, and temperatures… well, pretty much like they have been all winter. But it is going to get even warmer! Btw, small round of applause for El Nino- great job kid!

It’s the most… wonderful time… of the year!

Just me? EVERYBODY should be thrilled that the frozen fingers series is over! It means spring is here, and more daylight, and temperatures… well, pretty much like they have been all winter. But it is going to get even warmer! Btw, small round of applause for El Nino- great job kid!

Who else is happy that the series is over? Evan Adams held on to win a stacked Open field and his nemeses Gastin and Ambrose! This was the deepest Open field the series has seen, and hopefully that continues as disc golf in North East Ohio becomes more of a 12 month a year sport.

And the women’s division of course went to Meh… wait, wtf? Congratulations Andrea Parsons! I bet she had the best Easter of her life because the frozen fingers series is over! The women’s division for the finals had 7 participants- we need more of that kind of turnout!

Travis Goldsworthy held on at the end after going back and forth with Joe Cruz in the Advanced Am division, so for him the series ended just in time! Oddly small field compared to Open and Intermediate- a few notables moved up to Open (good job!), and we did not see the same movement from Intermediate…

Tyler Shrock dominated in Intermediate! He’s happy the series is over, because now he no longer has to toil in this division. He may be the Craigslist killer too. Just sayin...

The newest division that we tracked this year was Masters, which Bill Vaughn held on to win. He is so cool! And I would like to thank Ron McCollum for skipping some events to make that possible. I’m sure Ron is happy the series ended and he can save some money on gas, hitting the events he did from Warren. NEOhio is a large territory!

Who else is happy? The real winners- disc golfers all over NEOhio! I’ll save the details for someone else to report, but funds raised will be going to Painesville to help them go from 9 to 18 holes, Medina to upgrade baskets at Poolside, Parma/ Lakeview Church to help with concrete tee pads, and Mosquito Lake to expand existing 12 hole course to 17 holes… no, what the heck, lets make it 18 holes! All told, $3000 going to those 4 projects. That, and the camaraderie with like minded huckers, is what the frozen fingers series is about, and hopefully we can continue to build on this in the future!

But what do you do with your disc golfin' self now? For one, April and May are a great time of year for course projects and improvements, and hopefully we will see some opportunities to volunteer popping up here soon. Secondly, get thee asses to Aurora! Apparently everything else is just going through the motions… Lastly, be excellent to each other, and see you on the links somewhere soon!

I would like to place a challenge to all to organize and execute workdays at your local course. The NEODGA would like to know how many attended, which courses benefitted, and highlights of the activities...

I would propose conducting the workday the week of Arbor Day and Earth Day (April 17th - April 25th). Weekend, weeknight, both!

Maybe the event could be tied to a fun round after work is completed. Possibly local scout troops could be encourage ... more

2016 frozen fingers charity series SCHEDULE IS FINAL

Tournament Directors: Contact NEO if any issues with any of the goals of the series (shelter, food, clear tees, etc). Local clubs rule the roost! We just try to create consistent "standards" to differentiate the series' "brand" from average ice bowls.

We are tracking 5 divisions this year, up from 4 last year and 3 in previous years, as demand dictates (3 per division? TD to make call): Open, Adv Am, Int Am, Women (general), and Masters (general).

Unless prior arrangements have been made, the entry fee will be $20 per person regardless of division. $10 will go to that day’s event (an increase from past), $8 will go to the charity (NEODGA to distribute funds to NEO disc golf projects, usually at annual spring meeting), and $2 will go to the series payouts of approximately the top 1/3 of “series participants” (played in more than one event in that division) at the final event in Hudson on March 26th.

Events are pot luck, guided by the host club- but participation is encouraged by us travelers too! NEODGA has access to a generator and building wrap for electricity and securing the shelter as needed. If significant snow, best practices in the past include clearing the tee pads (we can often help with shovels and salt if needed) and blazing a central path- tee to basket, basket to next tee- with a snow mobile when available (NEODGA does NOT have a snow mobile). Contact me if any of these areas are going to be a difficulty so we can increase support!

There is a rolling ace fund

The top 5 finishes in events you play in will go to your series total, with 100 points for first place in each division, 98 for second, 96 for third and so on. The final event is weighted 50% more. That leaves room for you to either miss an event or play out of division in an event without hurting your chances in your “main” division.

The first event is doubles, one general division for all for the day. But when you register, each player on every team registers in their series division, and the points earned that day in doubles will be transferred to your standings in your division. Teams can be of the same division, or mixed divisions from the series point of view.

And Then We Rocked the Lock...

A sketchy forecast gave way to clear sunny skies, the weather not daring to disrupt not only Akron’s first annual Open Streets celebration, but even more importantly the inaugural event of the newly constituted NEODGA, “Roc the Lock”. The unique allure of urban disc golf, even on a temporary 9 hole course, brought approximately 100 disc enthusiast to Lock 3 and surrounding areas in beautiful downtown Akron May 17th, 2015 for fun, sun, and to r ... more

A sketchy forecast gave way to clear sunny skies, the weather not daring to disrupt not only Akron’s first annual Open Streets celebration, but even more importantly the inaugural event of the newly constituted NEODGA, “Roc the Lock”. The unique allure of urban disc golf, even on a temporary 9 hole course, brought approximately 100 disc enthusiast to Lock 3 and surrounding areas in beautiful downtown Akron May 17th, 2015 for fun, sun, and to raise money for the children of St Jude’s.
Sloped and tiered blacktop and concrete, smattered with trees, an underpass, amphitheater stage green, parking garage tee pad, and a menacing canal gave this DGHOFer designed course once in a lifetime fairways and obstacles to work with. And Bill Griffith was up to the challenge… four times before the city approved the course layout! We needed to make sure safety was not an issue… if one of the women on the roller derby team were to get hit with a disc, golfers’ lives may have been lost!
And there were some cringe worthy shots. Besides handfuls of people trying the sport for the first time (you could play for free around the event), we had 70 or so golfers play in “Roc the Lock” with discs they didn’t normally throw, around obstacles they’ve never contemplated negotiating. Hopefully the pics from the ground and the drone captured mostly the more impressive flights. There were some pretty impressive shots too… but this was about fun, sun, raising money for charity (over $700!), raising awareness for disc golf, people watching, and throwing a disc down Main Street in downtown Akron as hard as you want without having to run from the police immediately afterwards.
Special thanks: Steve Godar who brought this opportunity to NEODGA and worked continuously with event organizers, Bill Griffith for his time working with the city on the course, Eric Centanni and Katie Meloy for running the event like it was their own with no advanced warning, Kevin Wilsterman for convincing his employer Fishermans Central to start selling discs in time to bring the stock to this event- and donating prizes, Paige and Ally from U of Akron for their help during registration and being our St Jude liaisons, Larry Jennings and his drone, Kevin Whitlock’s photo services, Scott Campbell for his awesome NEODGA banners, everyone who lent portable baskets for the day, and sincerely ALL the golfers who represented our sport so well. Honestly, disc golf was one of the main jewels of Akron’s Open Streets… we should all be proud!

Chris bastard Barbo is the inaugural winner of the NEODGA fantasy football league. Trophy will be on display at the first frozen fingers event at least! Through donations from me and my brother Jon Tree Vaughn (who lost final to Barbo) to build the Champions Cup, we will still have $35 to donate to NEO. This was the first annual- and looking to expand next year for more fun and more funds generated for NEO cause. Must have North East Ohio connection and a PDGA number. 5th Annual FFFT Series Payout

For the series, we pay out about the top third of series participants in each division, just like for individual events: In Open, Advanced, and Intermediate divisions only. But “series participants” means every player who played in 2 or more events in that division- not just one event in a division. For example, if I play only one event in Open and the rest of the events I played Advanced, then I don’t count towards the Open Field for the se ... more

So, all of those locals (and there are a lot! And we should encourage that!) who come out for one event in the series because it is a couple miles from their house add $2 each towards the series’ payout purse, but do not add to the total of the series field.
Example: 5 event series- Open Division- 40 total different participants
-6 golfers played in all 5 events= $60 towards final purse
-6 golfers played in 4 of 5 events= $48 towards final purse
-5 golfers played in 3 of 5 events= $30 towards final purse
-4 golfers played in 2 of 5 events= $16 towards final purse
-19 golfers played in only 1 event= $38 towards final purse
21 Total Series Field/Participants, $192 Total Series Purse paid out to top 7:
1) $50 2) $40 3) $30 4) $25 5) $20 6) $15 7) $12
If the Field was 40, payouts would be ridiculous splitting $192 thirteen ways!

Modification 1: 2 points for everybody you beat or tie in your division, and yourself, each event that you play. It spreads out the points a bit, makes it less maddening to work on.
Modification 2: We’re not counting up from zero, but down from 100 (150 in final). This way, smaller events “attendance-wise” are just as big of a win as events with a packed field. And it makes the numbers “make sense” at a glance: 3rd place is always 96 points in events leading up to the final event, no matter the size of the field in the division. Otherwise, 3rd place might be 8 points in a field of 10, 21 points in a field of 23, or 2 points in a field of 4. Anybody winning a division at the Parma event in 2014 when it was very windy and 5 degrees out deserved AT LEAST 100 POINTS instead of less than 10, because only 30 hearty souls braved the conditions to play that day.
Modification 2.5: The first 2 modifications added together means that we are essentially counting back from 50 by ones, and then multiplying by 2 for most events (100 points for 1st place, 98 points for 2nd, 96 for 3rd, etc), and by 3 for the final event (which makes final 150 points for 1st place, 147 points for 2nd, 144 for 3rd, etc). We want the final event to have extra weight, but not as much as 2 normal events like true “double points” would do.
Example: Here is how it would work in the Mock Cold Weather Classic:

Modification 3: Total Series Points: Drop your lowest point event. If 6 events are in the FFFT Series (like in 2015), then your top 5 point totals count towards your series total points. If you don’t play all events, one of your “zeros” will not count towards your total. The advantage for those playing in all (6) events is that you get to drop the event that you scored the poorest and are trying to forget anyway!
Summary: Takeaways from above modifications and example:
-If played, the heavily weighted series final will almost always count towards your total, but not enough to be greater or equal to playing 2 regular events.
-In mock event above, 10th place Ryan got 82 points in Open division, but can play rest of series in lower division and not be at a scoring disadvantage to the rest of that field. So go ahead and move up a division for 1 event to play against your buddy! You’re not throwing away your chances to compete in your normal division! That’s more flexibility!
-If series that mock event was in had exactly 8 Open players in every other event, and Jon DeCapua played them all, he could drop his 9th place 84 and just count his five 86s! That’s just mean! And pointing out the bonus of playing every event!
-Jay Kovach doesn’t have to say “screw it” and skip the rest of the events in the series just because work got in the way this one time. That should maximize attendance in the middle and final events!

5th Annual FFFT Point System: Short Blurb

You get 2 points for everyone you beat or tie in your division, counting backwards from 100 for 1st place, 98 for 2nd place, 96 for third, etc, in each individual event you play leading up to the final in Hudson. The Hudson event will be 3 points per slot counting backwards from 150 for 1st, 147 for second, 144 for third, etc. In this 6 event tour, your top 5 point events will count towards your total. Top third of series participants cash in Open, Advanced, and Intermediate divisions.

They will also be out on ** SATURDAY 6-28-14 FOR A LARGE WORKDAY ** that will also be a part of the segment. They want to show the game and all of the volunteer motivation behind it.
